To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CASPER HUoo GRINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in buckles, and particularly to that class of buckles which are provided with lever tongues, and the object of my improve: ment is to supply for any description of buckle frames, whether plain or ornamental, having a ton as bar, a lever tongue having means for pivotally mounting it on the tongue bar with an interspace or clearance between it and the tongue bar permitting free seating and attachment of the leather holding piece to the tonguebar, and whereb the ton ue may freely move without binding or interference.

Any description of buckle frame may be used in conjunction with my improved combined lever ton e and tuck loop, wherein a tonguebar 9 is furnished upon which to ivotally mount the tongue member 5. The frame shown in Fi 4 is of an ornamental design suited or some purposes where display is desired, and any other ornamental configuration of the frame elements 8, 9 and 11 may be adopted. In Fig. 3 is shown a preferred type of buckle frame, whose elements 8, 9 and 11 are such as to provide a hollow rectangular frame, the forward bar 11 having a sleeve 12 mounted thereon, and the tongue bar 9 hav ing a pair of spaced lugs 10 positioned medially' on its outer edge, the interspace of the lugs used as a medial bearing for a tongue5 pivoted thereon.

The tongue 5 has an integral tuck 100 J 2 projecting therefrom oppositely and pre erably curved upwardly to seat it with its side members 2 depending over the side edges of a received strap end 17 with the cross bar 1 resting upon the top of the strap, which thus binds the parts together to prevent any side movements of the tuck loop. The cross bar 3 of the tuck loop from whose forward edge the tongue 5 projects is widened at l to strengthen it and afford a supporting body for a downwardly extending bifurcated integral projection 6, flattened in the medial plane of the tongue and tuck loop. The curved bifurcations 7 of said rojection may be clenched around the middle of the tongue bar 9 between the lugs 10, as the tongue bar element may be made of malleable iron or other material capable of being bent without fracture. This construction and means of connecting the tongue bar to the lever tongue is best shown in Fig. 5.

In order to mount said buckle on a strap 13, the strap is provided with a medial longitudinal slot 15 at some distance from one end, wide enough to allow of insertion of the projection 6. The strap is then split from said slot toward said end to provide a pair of separated end members 14. It will be particularly observed that the projection 6 is made long enough, as is shown in the Figs. 2, 5 and 8, to provide a relatively wi e interspace or clearance between the tongue bar 9 and the combined and alined tongue 5 and tuck loop 2, sufficient to freely permit passage and reception of the strap members 14 about the stem 6, to receive said projection in and through the slot 15, the members 14 then bein bent reversely around the tongue bar 9 and positioned in contact with the under surface of the strap 13, and secured thereto by rivets 16 or other fastening means as may be desired.

Various minor changes may be eifected in the forms and arrangements of the parts of my said buckle, without, however, departing from the scope or principles of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a device of the character described, an independent buckle frame provided with a tongue bar, and a tongue member having a bifurcated projection adapted to be pivotally mounted on the tongue bar with the bifurcations clenched around the tongue bar.

2. In a device of the character described, an independent buckle frame provided with a tongue bar, and a tongue member consisting of a combined single tongue and a tuck loop, said tongue member having an integral bearing projection mounted pivotally on the central portion of said tongue bar, and said tongue bar having means thereon for preventing side play of said tongue.

3. In a device of the character described. an independent buckle frame provided with a tongue bar, a tongue member consisting of a combined single tongue and an upwardly curved tuck loop, said tongue member having an integral projection provided with a bearing opening pivoted on said tongue bar, the projection being lengthened to afford clearance between said ton ue bar and said combined tongue and tuck loop for passage of a strap therebetween.

4. In a device of the character described, in combination, an independent buckle frame provided with a tongue bar, a tongue member consisting of a combined single tongue and a tuck loop, said tongue having a lengthened projection pivotally mounted centrally on said tongue bar, with the C011].- bined tongue and tuck loop spaced from the tongue bar, and a strap having one end longitudinally divided, its members passed about said projection through said interspace, around the tongue bar and then fastened to the undivided )art of the strap.
