L FRANK HANDLE FASTENING.
No. 452,218. Patented May 12, 1891.
- W/ TNE SSE S A TT 0HNE rs UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESTER FRANK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION formlng part of Letters Patent No. 452,218, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed September 10, 1890. Serial No. 364,544. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LESTER FRANK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Handle-Fastening for Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fastening specially designed to conveniently and securely unitethe handle to the vehicle-body of dolls carriages and other toy vehicles.
The invention consists of a sleeve secured to the end of the handle and provided with a projecting tongue adapted to be engaged by the screw or pin fastening the axle to the vehicle-body.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with parts in section. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the same, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same.
The toy vehicle A is provided with the usual body B, to the under side of which are secured the axles G, which may be of any approved construction, preferably, however, of the construction shown and described in Let ters Patent No. 385,452, granted to me under date of July 3, 1888. The divided sections of the axle O are fastened to the carriagebody by means of the screws, nails, or pins D, each of the axle-sections carrying a wheel E, as shown.
The handle F for propelling the vehicle may be single or double, as illustrated in the drawings, and passes through eyes or loops G, formed on the end-of the vehicle-body B.
On the lower end of the arm or arms of the handle F is secured a sleeve H, made of sheet metal and provided with a downwardly-extending tongue I, adapted to be bent inward and formed near'its lower end with an opening J for the passage of the screw, nail, or pin D, which fastens the axle C to the vehicle-body.
In assembling the several parts of the vehicle the handle F is applied to the body B by passing the arms of the handle through the loops or eyes G, and then bending the tongue I inwardly onto the carriage-body, and then placing the axle on the carriage-body over the bent part of the tongues, so that the openings in the axle C register with the openings .I in the tongues I to permit of conveniently driving the screw, pin, or nail D through the said openings, thereby fastening the tongues I, with the axle, to the vehiclebody. Instead of passing the tongues I between the body and the axle, they may be placed on the under side of the axle and the latterdirectly onto the under side of the carriage-body. The heads of the screws, nails, or pins D then rest on the under side of the tongues I. It will be seen that by this means the screws which fasten the axle to the carriage-body are used for fastening the lower part of the handle seeu rely and conveniently to the carriage-body, thereby saving considerable labor and expense.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a vehicle-body and its axle, of sleeves provided with downwardly and inwardly projecting apertured tongues resting upon the axle, pins or screws for securing the tongues to the axle, and handles secured in the sleeves, substantially as described.
2. In a handle-fastening for toy vehicles, the combination, with the vehicle-body, of an axle formed of split sections, a handle provided with a sleeve or sleeves, each having a projecting tongue adapted to pass onto the axle, and screws or pins adapted to pass through the said axle and the said tongues to unite the latter with the axle to the vehiclebody, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a handle-fastening for toy vehicles, the combination, with a carriage-body pro- Vided with eyes or loops, of at handle adapted I tongues of the sleeves into the carriage-body, to pass through the said eyes or loops, sleeves secured on the lower ends of the said handle and each provided with a projecting tongue, 5 an axle made in split sections, and screws or Witnesses:
pins adapted to pass through the split sections of the axle and the said projecting suhstzuitially 21% shown and described.
