Description
E. A. DAY.
Clasps for Elastic Tubes.
No. 134,038, Patented Dec. 17, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND A. DAY, or OBERLIN, onIo.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,038, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. DAY, of the town of Oberlin, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Clasps for Elastic Tubes, of
. elevation of the inclosed metallic tube 0,
showing the opposite halves of the clasp A B in section.
A B represents the main clasp, which is made in semicircular halves, and so that when hinged together near their points, as shown in Fig. 1, they form a split hollow tube. The front ends of the clasp are provided with an elastic spring, F, of suflicient strength to effectually close the elastic nozzle D when the grasp of the hand upon the rear ends of the clasp is entirely relaxed, and so as to regulate the flow of water or other fluid through the nozzle D according as the pressure of the hand upon the lower ends of the clasp is increased or diminished. The end K, Fig. 2, of the metallic tube 0, as well as the opposite end J of the same, is finished with a ribbed surface, as indicated by the dotted lines, for the purpose of more securely holding the adjustable elastic nozzle upon the one end and the hoseH upon the other. As seen in Fig. 2, a short piece of hose, H, is passed over the rear end of the metallic tube 0, and the other end of said hose is provided with the ordinary connectingscrew I, on which to receive and hold the main hose.
But I will here state that, as another modification for the finish of the rear end of the metallic tube 0, it may extend out past the rear ends of the clasp A B, and there terminate in the formation of the connecting-screw I, and thus dispense with the use of the short piece of hose H, before described. Near the front end of the metallic tube 0 are formed the trunnions E E, having suitable points and shoulders to pass through the opposite halves of the clasp, as clearly shown in the drawing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The central metallic tube 0, provided with trunnions E E, and combined with the clasp A B, spring F, and flexible nozzle D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-In testimony that I claim the above Ihereun' to subscribe my name on this the 12th day of September, 1872.
E. A. DAY.
