Description

C. A. ELLIOTT.
SCREEN DOOR BRACE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB.28. 1919.

CLOA A. ELLIOTT, OF MARION, INDIANA.
SCREEN-DOOR BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed February 28, 1919. Serial No. 279,665.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOA A. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Door Braces, of which the following is a specificatlon, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a screen door brace and has for its object, the production of a simple and eflicient means for bracing a screen door and preventing the door from sagging.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient brace, which may be adjusted to take up the sag in a door, without removing the brace from the door.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the brace, certain parts thereof being shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one of the bracing caps.
By referring to the drawings it will bev seen that 1 designates the screen door which is provided with suitable side rails 2 and a transversely extending rail 3. A rod 4 is employed for the purpose of bracing the door 1 and comprises an elongated body having a pair of oppositely extending flattened portions 5 formed intermediate the ends thereof. These flattened portions 5 will constitute an eflicient means for facilitating the rotation of the rod 4:. This rod 4 is provided with oppositely threaded ends 6 upon which ends 6. are threaded the bracing caps 7. Each bracing cap 7 comprises a flattened end portion 8 having an aperture 9 formed therein through which aperture 9 is adapted to pass a suitable screw or pin 10 for holding the cap 7 in engagement with the frame of the door. Each cap 7 is provided with a transversely extending flange 11 upon its inner end having an aperture 12 formed therein through which apertures 12 extend the threaded ends of the bracing rod 4. The transversely extending flange 11 is provided with an inner side flange 13 and an outer side flange 14. This outer side flange 14. is provided with a rounded inwardly extending nose 15 having an inwardly curved outer face 16 as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and L of the drawings. The brace is attached to the door frame as accurately as possible having the nose portions 15 resting against the inner edges 17 of the rails 2 and 3 of the door frame 1 thereby constituting an eflicient means for bracing the rails 2 and 3 without materially injuring the rails 2 and 3. These rounded nose portions 15 will firmly bear against the rails 2 and 3 thereby producing an eflicient grip upon the frame of the door and permitting the sag to be taken up by the threading of the rod 4. into the caps 7.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient means has been produced for permitting the brace to be adjusted and thereby holding the door to which the device is attached in such a position as to prevent the same from sagging.
What I claim is 1. In a screen door brace, the combination of a rod provided with threaded ends and with a plurality of oppositely-extending flattened grip portions formed intermediate the ends of said rod, a pair of caps mounted upon the threaded ends of the rod, each cap comprising a body having an apertured, flattened end portion adapted to lie flat against the frame of a door, and the body,
near its outer end an aperture, and with a nose between the aperture in the flattened transverse flange on its inner end, said end and the flange at the inner end of the transverse flange terminating in a short incap.
ner flange and in a comparatively long In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 5 outer flange, and said outer flange provided signature.
at its inner end With an inner-extending CLOA A. ELLIOTT.
