FENCEPOST.
Application filed September 18, 1919.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. CLARKE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Keremeos, in the county of Yale, Province of British Columbia, having invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenceposts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic fence posts, the main object of my invention being to provide a post which can be easily stamped out of sheet metal.
A further object is to provide means for retaining the wire to said post without kinking the wire when passing through sald post.
A further object is to provide a means for frictionally holding the wire-holding means from displacement in the post after the said holding means is put into proper position. Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the ronstruetion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, like numerals designate like parts throughout the various drawings.
3 indicates a post in general, which is preferably made of sheet metal and stamped out in the form desired. As noted in Fig. 1, the post 3 tapers smaller to the top.
The post in. general is curved with its sides extending backwardly. The lower end of the post is cut so that the sections may be bent up at rigat angles to the perpendicular. By this base I form means whereby the post will be held securely in the ground. The front of the post is concaved at intervals as at 4-. The sections of the end and between the concaved portions 4 are slotted as at 5 to receive a retainer rod 6 which extends longitudinally of the post. I
The outer face of he post is horizontally grooved as at 7. These grooves are in pairs and are of a depth sufficient to allow two horizontal strands 8 to pass through them Specification of Letters Patent.

so that when the retainer 6 is inserted through the slots 5 it will not kink the strands 8. By kinking these strands the strength of the wire is greatly depreciated. Furthermore, by having a loose, slidable connection the fence will be able to give should anything run against it.
Provided at intervals I have tightener wires 9. These wires are shaped to fit the outside of the post, and from practice I find that it will be necessary to use one between each concaved section 4-. After the retainer 6 has been put in proper position, one end of the wire 9 is tightened around one side of the post and the end is bent so as to retain this tightness. The other end 9 is then pulled tightly and its end is bent around the otherside of the post 3. I n this position the center portion of the tightener wires 9 is pressing outwardly on the re tainer 6 and frictionally holding the same against normal displacement.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new, is:
A metallic fence post being formed from sheet metal and having its sides grooved rearwardly, one end of said post being slotted and bent at right angles to the main part of the post so as to form a retainer against displacement of the post, a perpendicular retainer slidably positioned on said post, concaved sections formed longitudinally on the outer face. of said post, pairs of horizontally concaved sections, said concaved sections being adapted to hold horizontal strands of wire pinned between said post and said retainer without the wire being kinked, tightener wires between said post and said retainer, the ends of said wires being tightened and bent around the sides of said post and. the center of said wires being frictionally engaged with said retainer to hold the same in position against normal displacement.
