To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES J. FERRER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Harris, in the county of Barbour and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in wire fences.

The object of the invention is to provide a fence of this character having metallic posts.

adapted to be driven into the ground and provided, with wire-attaching devices adapted to be applied to certain of said posts and wire attaching and supporting devices adapted to be applied to certain other of said posts, thereby forming-a strong and durable fence.

A further object is to provide a fence-wireattaching device for the posts of the fence which may be secured to said posts at any desired position thereon, thus permitting any desired number of fence-wires to be used,

means being provided whereby the fencewires are clamped or secured to the post simultaneously with the securing of the attaching device, said attaching devices and the wireengaging surface of the post being so formed as to prevent cutting of the fence-wires when clamped to the post.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the construction of the fence I employ two forms of wire attaching devices, one form of which is applied to every fourth post, while the other form is applied to the three The form of the attachmediate posts is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings and consists of a strip or plate of metal 4, bent upon itself in the form of a loop and has formed in its opposite ends bolt-holes 5, which when said ends are brought together after being looped around the post are brought into alinement, and through the same are inserted clamping-bolts 6. Upon the clampingbolts 6 are adapted to be screwed a nut 7, which when screwed up uponsaid bolt will clamp the .sides of the strip into engagement with the sides of the post. In the opposite sides of the strip 4: adjacent to the loop or doubled end of the same are formed wire-receiving notches 8, which terminate in the form of circular eyes or apertures 9, through which the fence-wires are adapted to pass. The position of the eyes or apertures 9 is such with respect to the front or forward edge of the post that when the ends of the strip 4; are drawn together by the clamping-bolt and nut the wire passing through said eyes or apertures will be drawn around the forward edge of the post and securely clamped thereto. The edges of the A eyes or apertures 9 are rounded, as is also the front edge of the post, whereby when the wire is clamped against the post the same will not be cut or broken.

On every fourth post of the fence is eniployed combined attaching and supporting devices by which the line-wires are not only held in tight engagement with the post, but are also rigidly supported against possibility of slipping, these devices being clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. The attaching and supporting devices consist of a bail-shaped plate or strip 10, in the opposite sides of which, adjacent to the ends thereof,

are formed wire-engaging notches 12. These notches 1'2 terminate in alined eyes or apertures 13, through which are adapted to pass the line-wires of the fence when the device is In the loop or doubled end of the strip 10 is formed an aperture 14,

through which is adapted to be passed a setscrew 15, said set-screw being adapted to be screwed through nuts 16, arranged within the looped portion of the strip 10. The inner end of the set-screw 15 is pointed and when screwed into engagement with the rear side of the post will be forced into the same, thereby rigidly holding the attaching device 10 against slipping upon the post. hen the set-screw 15 is thus screwed into engagement with the rear side of the post, the line-wires of the fence passing through the eyes 13 in the opposite ends of the strip will be drawn tightly around the forward rounded edge of the post, thus securely attaching the wire thereto. The edges of the eyes or apertures 13 are rounded to'prevent the cutting of the line-wires when the same are drawn thereby into engagement with the forward edge of the post.

By providing acombined attaching and supporting device for each fourth post of the fence the line-wires will be firmly supported or held in place against slipping on the post, the attaching devices for the intermediate posts being supported by the line-wires of the fence, as well as by the clamping-bolts 6, which are applied thereto. In a fence constructed as herein shown and described any form of line-Wires may be employed. and a strong durable fence will be formed thereby.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*

1. A fence of the character described having posts arranged at suitable intervals, linewires secured to said posts, attaching devices clamped to certain of said posts to attach said line-wires to said posts, attaching and supporting devices arranged on certain other of said posts, and each comprising a bail-shaped plate adapted to engage the sides of a post, means whereby the fencewire is engaged with the ends of said plate, and a set-screw to be passed through said plate and into engagement with the rear side of the post, there by supporting said attaching devices and binding the line-wire to the post, substantially as described.

2. A fence of the character described (OHI- prising posts arranged at suitable intervals, said posts having a rounded outer edge, linewires adapted to be secured to said posts, linewire-attaching devices arranged on certain of said posts, said attaching devices consisting o l' metallic strips having wire-receiving notches and adapted to be looped around said posts, clamping-bolts passed through the ends of said strips, nuts screwed onto said bolts to draw said ends of the strips together and the linewires into close engagement with the post,' line-wire attaching and supporting devices arranged on certain other of said posts, said devices consisting of bail-shaped plates or strips adapted to engage the sides of said posts, said strips having near their ends wirereceiving notches, and means whereby said devices are rigidly secured to a post to attach the line-wires thereto and to support the same at the desired position, substantially as described.

3. A fence of the character described coniprising posts arranged at suitable intervals, said posts having a rounded outer edge, linewires adapted to be secured to said posts, linewire-attaching devices arranged on certain of said posts, said attaching devices consisting of metallic strips having \vire-receiving notches and adapted to be looped around said posts, clamping-bolts passed through the ends of said strips, nuts screwed onto said bolts to draw said ends of the strips together and the line-wires into close engagement with the post, line-wire attaching and supporting devices arranged on certain other of said posts, said devices consisting of bail-shaped plates or strips adapted to engage the sides of said posts, said strips having near their ends wirereceiving notches, a nutarranged in the looped end of said strip, a pointed set-screw adapted to be passed through an aperture in said looped end and screwed through said nut and into ongagement with the rear side of the post, thereby attaching the line-wire and supporting the device against slipping on the post, substantially as described.
