Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Application filed July 7, 1919. Serial No. 309,086.
To'aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD A. ST. CLAIR, a citizen of the United Los Angeles, in the County of Los Angeles' and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Incubators, of which the following is a specification.
.My object is to make an improved thermocircuit breaker.
My thermostatic circuit breaker 40 1s centrally located upon the top 32 of an incu bator.
The rectangular flat block 41 is made 5f insulation material such as wood fiber and is of considerable length. The block 42 otthe same material is substantially square and is placed across one end of the block 41. The metal plate 43 is placed upon the block 42, and bolts 44 and 45 are inserted upwardly through the block 41, through the block 42, and through the plate 43, and
nuts are applied to the upper ends of the bolts to secure the parts together.
A spring conducting plate 46 fits upon the plate 43 between the bolts 44 and 4 5 and the binding post construction 47 secures one end of the plate 46 to the plate 43. The metal plate 48 is placed upon the block 41 at the opposite end from the plate 43/ A contact plate 49 is placed upon the plate 48.
Abolt 50 is inserted through the plate 41,
' through the plate 48, and through the plate 49 to hold the contact plate 49 rigidly and adjustably in position. The contact point 51 is fixed upon the plate 49. A binding post 52 connects the other end of the plate 48-to the plate 41. The contact plate 49 and the plate 48 serve to electrically connect the contact point 51 to the binding post 52.
An adjustable contact 53 is mounted through the free end of the spring conduct ing plate 46 in position to engage the contact point 51. The screw 54 isscrew seated through the plate 46 and has a lock nut 55 engaging the plate to hold the screw in its States, residing at 'eake particularly useful" adjusted position. An opening 56 is formed through the insulation plate 41 in line with I the screw 54.
The plate 41 is secured to the top 32 by screws inserted through screw holes 57. A plug socket 58 is mounted upon the top A cord 59 leads from the electric supply line to the plug 60 mounted in the socket "58. A wire 61 leads from the socket 58' to the binding post 47. A wire 62 leads from the binding post 53. Branch wires 63 and 64 lead from the" wire 62 to the lamps 65 and 66. A wire 67 leads from the other side of the socket 58. Branch wires 68 and 69 lead from the wire 67 to the-lamps 70 and.
71. A wire 72 connects the lamps 65 and 70, and a wire 73 connects the lamps 66 and 71. The lamps 65, 66, 70 and 71 are mounted in the sockets 35. The lamps 65 and 70 are connected in. one series, and the lamps 66 and 71 are connected in another series and the two series are connected together so that out the other lamp of that series.
The thermostatic circuit breaker 40 is controlled by a thermostat 74, and the de- "tails of the thermostat 74 are as follows:
A tubular stem 75 is fixed through the center of the top 32 and extends into the opening 56. The plunger rod 76 operates in the stem 75 against the end of the screw 54. The U-bracket 77 is fixed upon the lower end of the stem 75. and the ether wvafers 78 and 7 9 are mounted between the lower arm 80 of the U-bracket and the lower end of the plunger rod 76. The ether wafers 78 and 79 are located approximately at the center of the chamber area comprising the chambers 30 and 31. v
When the temperature of the chambers rises to the desired point the ether wafers 78 and 7 9 will expand and push the plunger if one lamp of a series burns out it will put rod 76 upwardly against the screw 54 and raise the contact 53 away from the contact 51 and break the circuit, and when the temperature goes down below the desired point the ether wafers will contract and the spring tension of the spring plate 46 will close the circuit through the contacts 53 and 51, so that when the parts are properly adjusted and the electric current maintained, a practically even temperaturemay be maintained in the incubator chamber.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
A thermostatic circuit breaker comprising a spring conducting plate rigidly mounted at one end and free at the other end, 'a binding post at the rigid end of the conducting plate, a rigid contact point rigidly mounted at the free end of the conducting plate, a binding .post electrically connected to the rigid contact point, a contact point adjustably mounted through the free end of the conducting plate to engage the rigid contact point, a screw adjustably hired to the conducting plate intermediate of its ends, a tubular stem extending downwardly in line with the screw, a U-bracket fixed upon the lower end of the tubular stem, a plunger rod slidingly mounted in the tubular stem to engage the adjusting screw, and ether wafers mounted in the U-bracket andioperating the plunger rod, so that when the ether Wafers expand the circuit will be broken and so that when the ether wafers contract the circuit will be closed. v
