Description
Patented Mar. 3, 1925.'
UNITED STATES 1,527,976 PATENT OFFICE.
. JOHN G. HAUGART, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
INSECT DESTROYE'R.
Application filed April 25, 1924. Serial No. 708,866.
once being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to insect exterminators and particularly to one in which a wire heated'preferably electricallyis used to destroy the insects which are attracted by a light or other suitable lure.
One object of my invention is.to produce a device of the class referred to, which will be simple and strong in construction and at the same time neat in appearance and durable.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for disconnecting the resistance wire from the source of electrical supply so that the lamp may be used either alone or in conjunction with the heated wire.
In the accompanying drawings, which. illustrate one -form of insect destroyer made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1' is a side elevation; Figure 2is a view similar to Figure 1 but taken in a direction at right angles thereto; Figure 3 is a bottom plan view; and Figure 4 is an enlarged view partly in section showing one of the wire supports.
5 indicates a double electric plug provided with a detachable side outlet 6. Carried by the plug 5 is a bracket 7 similar to an ordinary shade bracket but having each of its arms 8 formed in two parts separated by a block 9 of asbestos or other heat insulating material. Riveted, or otherwisesecured to the arms 8 of the bracket, is an upper supporting ring 10. Suspended from the upper notched on one edge, as indicated at 17' (Figure 4), to receive the turns of a helix of resistance wire 18. Two of the strips marked 16 are made somewhat longer than.
the others and one provided with screws 19 for attachment of the terminals 20 of the resistance coil which are in turn connected to the side outlet 6. The wire 18 forming the resistance coil should be of such size and length that the current supplied willheat it sufficiently to kill the insects striking against it. I have found that a temperature of about 400 F. is satisfactory for the purpose. 21 is an electric light bulb of any coil the side outlet 6 is detached from the body of the plug.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination'with an electric plug adapted to receive a lamp bulb, of resistance wire supported by said plug and electrically connected therewith to be heated by the current supplied to said plug.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with anelectric plug adapted to receive a lamp bulb, of a helix of resistance wire surrounding the lamp, said wire being electrically connected to said plug to be heated by the current supplied thereto.
3. In a. device of the class described, the combination with an electric plugadapted to receive a lamp bulb and provided with a detachable outlet, of a helix of resistance wire carried by said plug and surrounding the lamp, said wire being electrically connected to said detachable outlet.
4. In a device of-the class described, the combination with an electric plug adapted to receive a lamp bulb, of an annular member supported from said plug, a second annular member connected to said first name-d annular member by channel bars, insulatin strips carried in said channel bars, and a helix of resistance wire surrounding said strips and electrically connected to said suitable kind which is screwed into the plug 5. In a device of the class described, the combination with an electric plug adapted to receive a lamp bulb and provided with a detachable outlet, of an annular member supported from said plug, a second annular member connected to said first named annular member by channel bars, insulating strips in said channel bars, and a helix of resistance Wire surrounding said strips, said Wire being electrically connected to said detachable outlet.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto setmy hand and afiixed seal this the 22nd day of April, 1924:. i
JOHN G. HAUGART. as
