HEATING DEVICE April 1 8, 1933.
Filed Sept. ll, 1931 Patented Apr. 18; 1933 UNITED. STATESv LUTY HAWKINS, OF MOUNT VERNON, ILLINOIS HEATING DEVICE 'Application led September 11, 1931. Serial No. 562,376.
the several views:
Figure 1ra/ius t Jventicelpsection through a vention.
Figure 2 is a bottom-plan of the device partly broken away.
Figure 3 is an elevationof the device. Referring to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a supporting frame, preferably of rectangular construction. Seated on the frame 1 is a supporting frame 2 which is recessed in its lower and inner peripheral faces as indicated at 3 to receive a heat insulating plate 4 of asbestos or the like. The upper and inner peripheral faces of the supporting frame 2 are recessed as indicated at 5 'to receive a cover plate 6 which is held in position by means of a retaining frame 7 seated thereon and on the supporting frame 2. The frames 7 and 2 are secured V to the frame 1 -by means of a plurality of holdfast devices 8. The lower face of the supporting frame 1 is recessed as indicated at 9 to receive therein marginal portions of a flexible bottom 10 preferably formed of rubber. The bottom 10 is secured in position with respect to the frame 1 by means of a retaining frame 11 seated on the portion of the bottom 10 disposed within the recesses 9. The retaining frame 11 is maintained in position with respect tothe frame 1 Aby means of a plurality of holdfast devices 12.
Carried by the heat insulating plate 4 and projecting therefrom into the space 13 between the plate 4 and bottom 10 are a plurality of insulator pins 14 which support a Mheating device in accordance withthisn-r*`24\projeets `Vupwardly through the resistance coil 15. One end of the resistance coil 15 is connected with a conductor 16 extending around an insulator pin 17 and connected with one terminal 18 of a thermostat 19. The opposite end 'of the re- 55 sistance coil 15 is connected to a lead in wire 19 extending .around an insulator pin 20. The other terminal 21 of the thermostat 19 is connected with a similar lead in wire The thermostat 19 includes 60 a bi-metallic clement having oneV end secured to the terminal 18 and having its other cud adjacent but spaced from the terminal 2l. lontact between the element 23 and terminal 21 is made by means of a metal stern 24 65 threaded through the terminal 21. The stem plate 4 and cover 6 and is insulated from the latter by means of an insulating sleeve 25. Secured to the outer end of the stem 24 is an in- 70 sulating button 2G by means of which the stem may be rotated to adjust the inner end thereof with respect to the element 23.
In assembling the device, the insulator pins and thermostat vare secured to the plate 4, after which the plate 4, frame 2, cover 6 and retaining frame 7 are assembled and connected to the supporting frame 1 by means of the holdfast devices 8. The connections between the resistance coil 15 and lead in wires 80 19 and 22 are then made, after which the bottom 10 is secured in position by means of the retaining frame 11 and holdfast devices 12. In the use of the device, the space 13 is heated by the resistance coil 15, and the heat transmitted to the bottom 10 which is positioned within a brooder in a manner to have direct contact with the backs ofthe chicks within thebrooder. Owing to the flexibility of the bottom 10 the latter will substantially conform i-i contour with the backs of the chicks whereby the latter will be warmed in substantially the same manner as they would be if brooded with a hen.
While the embodiment of the invention y herein illustrated and described represents a preferred example of the heating device, it is tol be understood that changes vin the details of construction may be made which fall within the scope of the appended claim. 10
2 :,oomse Iclaimz= A heatin device comprising, a pair of supe osed orizontal'frames, the upper of said ames having its lower and inner peripheral faces formed with a recess, a heat insulating plate having marginal portions hereto.
