DRAWING-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27,1920.
Application filed May 7, 1919. Serial No. 295,270.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, MARTHA K. SCHAUiiR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drawing- Tables, of which the following is a speci- I lication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in drawing tables.'
The principal object of the invention is to provide a drawing table containing vertically-movable means that serve not only as copy-holders, but as partitions which divide off the table for the accommodation of two or more students. The' space on each side of a partition becomes, in a sense, a separate table for each student. My improved tables are therefore well adapted for any school in which drawing or kindred instruction is given. Another object of my invention is to provide shelves that may be readily attached, if desired, to the top portions of the table partitions.
Other important and incidentalv objects will be brought out in the followingspeciiication, and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.
The different forms of embodiment of my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a front view of one of my improved drawing tables equipped with three vertically-movable partitions. Fig. 2 is a top view of said table. Fig. 3 is an end View thereof. Fig. t is a front view of a table equipped with a rear copy-holding board. Fig. 5 is a top view thereof. Fig. 6 is a side view of the same. Fig. 7 is a detail end view of one of the copy-holding boards, showing a shelf supported thereby and the means for holding the board in its raised position above the table top. And Fig. 8 is a side view of said copy-holding board, shelf and holding means.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral l designates a flat table top supported by legs 2. The table is shown as elongated in Figs l, 2 and 3, with thr'ee longitudinal slots 3, 4 and 5 provided on a middle line running lengthwise of the top l. Vertically movable through each slot 3,
4l and 5, to a position either above or below the table top l, 4is a copy-holding board 6. In its position below the top surface of the table top l, each board 6 rests upon Va longitudinal rail 7 connected between end rails 8 that are secured between each end pair of legs 2. Grooved guides 9 extend from the bottom rail 7 to the table top l, to receive the boards (S for the purpose of guiding them during theirfup and down movement. (See Figs. l and 3.)
In Figs. l, 2 and 3, the copy-holding boards 6 are shown in their positions under the table top l, whereby the table is free to be used asany other one which is adapted for general use. N ow, when itis desired to use the table as one that will accommodate a group of drawing student'slet us say six in the present instancethe'boards 6 are drawn upwardly through their respec tive slots until they reach their uppermost positions. For the purpose of holding these boards in their raised positions, there is provided in the lower end edges of each one a recess 10 that receives the knee-shaped end 1l of a spring catch l2. As soon as the boards 6 are raised to their normal upper positions, the ends 1l of the catches l2, being under no further restraint, are pressed outwardly above those portions of the table top l at the ends of the slotsto support said boards in their elevated positions. lVhen it is desired to lower the boards 6, the ends 11 of the catches l2 are pressed inwardly a suflicient distance to clear the slot edges to permit the boards to descend to their normal positions below the top l. l/Vhile I employ this forni of catch, any other type may be used for this purpose without departing from the spirit of the invention.
W'hen the boards 6 are held in their elevated positions, they not only serve as means for holding' a copy or model for the student on each side of it, but they act as partitions v to divide off the table into separate spaces for the accommodation of numerous students. This feature of my invention commends itself particularly to drawing and other art schools, by providing ample and eicient table space for the students without involving the expense of furnishing a separate table for each student.
Referring to Figs. 7 and 8, it will be seen that a shelf 13, may, if desired, be'attached by brackets 14 or other suitable means to the top of each vertically-movable board 6, to support models or other articles used by lthe student or teacher.
near the end edge of the top l. In these,
ligures the` board is shown in an elevated position- Y On-eacli side of the copy-board 6, near its top portion, there is provided a concave recess 16 for the fingers by means of which the board may be firmly gripped for the purpose of raising it. These boards may also act as background areas for groups olr objects thatmight be arranged for students of drawing, since draperies and other background materials can be pinned against them. Such groups can be placed on each side of a raised board, thus affording six individual drawingsubjects, yas shown by the table in Fig.A 2. Objects on one side of the table can be used by the students in oneV class and those onM the other side by a class immediately following. This saves time, energy and confusion.
Ido not wish to be limited to the details of 'construction and arrangement. herein It will shown and described, and any changes or modifications may be made therein within lthe scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1; In a drawing table, the combination with a top therefor containing on a line running lengthwise through its middle portion, a series of elongated slots, of copyholding boards vertically movable through said slots to positions above the top that divide. itinto separate drawing spaces, meansbelow the top onwhich said boards rest in theirv lower positions,` and guides; for said boards between said top and supporting means.
2. Ina drawinr table, the combination with a topV thereor containing on a line rail connected to the middle portions osaid end rails, to forni a supportfor; saidboai'ds in their lowerinost positions, and grooved guides extending between said longitudinal rail and table top, to receive said boards..v
In witnesszwhereof I have. hereunto set my hand this` 5th day of May, 1919.
MARTHA SGI-IAUER.
