EVAN E. W YATT,- OF LOS ANGEIJES,- CALIFORNIA INSTRUCTION DESK ASSEMBLY Application fi1ed= March 4, 1931-. Serial no. 519,959.
My invention relates-to arr instructiondesk assembly and has for its principal object, the provision of. a relatively simple, practical H and compact desk assembly that may be adstudents; and: all persons: receiving instruction face the teacher or instructor, further, to provide an instruction desk assembly having; conveniently located and. arranged compartments for the accommodation of the books; writing materials and other instruction paraphernalia and requisites, further, to provide a desk assembly having, closed storage spaces for articles of wearing apparel andother personal belongings of the students or persons receiving instruction and further,to
provide an instruction deskassembly of the character referred to that afiords comfort and convenience to bothteacher or instructor and to the persons or students receiving instruction. 7
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention: consists in certain novel features of construction: and arrangement of parts'that will liereinafterbe more fully described: and claimed and illustrated in; the
accompanying; drawings in which: n V
Fig; L is a top plan View of an instrucembodying the principles of. my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevatlonalnew of the instruction desk assembly.
Fig.3 is an enlarged front and elevational view of the assembly. V Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectiontaken on the lime-4' ofFig. 1.
7 Referring by numerals to the accompanyingidra win'gswhicha illustrate apractical embodiment of my invention, 10 designates a base framepreferably formed of metal straps a that is substantially rectangular inform and at the: front end of the assembly the central portion of the transverse member 10 of the base frame: is extended forwardly to a central point so as to receive andsupport the base of a post 11 and swiveled on the top of said post is a seat 12 that is adapted to be occupied by the teacher or instructor.
Secured to the forward portions of the side rails of'base 10 are posts 12, preferably of metal and these posts support a transversely 6 disposed'box-like structure 13 in the center of whichis formed a compartment 14 and the top of this compartment is normally closed by a hinged cover 15'.
This-compartment 14s is positioned directly in front of the instructors seat 12 and is adapted to' contain paraphernalia and person-a1" effects of the'instructor and when the cover 15 isin closed position it provides a P flatsurfa'ce that performs the functions of a desk top.
Formed in the structure 18', immediately to-tllie leftv of compartment 14 is a compartment 16*,tl1'etop of Wlrichisclosed by a hinged plate 17, preferably of metal, and this compartment isadapted to receive books. and paraphernalia utilized by the instructor and a student when the letter is given personal instruction.
The cover 17, when closed, performs the functions of: a desk top.
Mounted. for swinging'moyement' upon the lefthan'd one of the front posts 1 is a horizontally disposed arm 18 and swiveled upon the free endof said arm is a seat19 thatis adapted to-beioccupied by the student or'person receiving individualinstruction. 7 When occupied by a student this seat 1 9 i s positioned' immediately to the left of the instructors seat 12' an'd' said seat'19 is siwiveled and mounted on the swinging arm 18 so as to enable the student or person receivinginstructi on toconveniently occupy said seat or to ariseand leave the same afterreceiving inpapers, books and other adjuncts utilized by the instructor and the students or persons receiving instruction.
The top of this side structure occupies the same horizontal plane with the hinged plate or cover 15, thus combining with the latter to function as a desk top and formed in the rear portion of this top are recesses 23, for the accommodation of pens, pencils, ink and like writing materials.
Arranged above the base 10, to the rear of the front structures 13 and 20, are transversely disposed desk structures that are used by the students or persons receiving instruction and arranged immediately to the rear of each desk structure are seats for the students or persons receiving instruction.
In the drawings, I have illustrated three double desks to be utilized by the students and six seats for the students or persons re ceiving instruction, but as the construction of these desks and seats are identical, it will only be necessary to describe one desk and the seats that are associated therewith. Obviously the number of students desks and seats may be increased or diminished from the number herein shown and described.
Each students desk comprises a. horizontally disposed substantially rectangular housing 24, preferably formed of sheet metal or wood veneer and the space within each housing is divided so as to form a pair of compartments that .are adapted to receive books, writing material and personal effects of the students or persons receiving instruction.
Arranged in the upper portion of each compartment is a horizontally disposed partition 26 and the relatively narrow space 27 above each partition is adapted to receive large forms, record sheets and the like that are used by the students or persons receiving instruction and which are not to be folded.
In order to facilitate the removal of these relatively large sheets each partition 26 is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 28 that extends rearwardly from the front edge of the partition, thus enabling the thumb and index finger to readily grasp the edges of sheets lying on the partitions.
The top of each compartment 27 is closed by a plate or panel 29, preferably formed of sheet metal and which is connected by suitable hinges 30 to the rear transverse member of the structure 24. The plates or panels 29 when closed provide flat surfaces that function as desk tops.
Arranged between each pair of hinged top plates or panels 29, is alongitudinally disposed plate 31 that is fixed to the upper portion of the housing or structure 24 and formed in this plate are depressions 32 that are adapted to receive pens, pencils, ink and similar writing materials.
Depending from the intermediateportion of each housing 24 and beneath the rear portion thereof, is a substantially rectangular structure 33, preferably formed of sheet metal and arranged within this structure is a vertically disposed partition 34 that divides the space into two narrow vertical compartments or storage spaces 35.
Arranged within the upper portion of each compartment 35, is a horizontally disposed partition 36, thus providing in the upper portion of each housing 33, a pair of relatively small compartments or storage spaces 37 which may receive books, papers and per sonal effects of the students or persons receiving instruction.
The compartments 35 and 37 are closed at their forward ends by doors 38 that are hinged to the front central portion of the structure 33. I
The small triangular plates that appear in front of the upper inner corners of the doors 38 in Fig. 4, are arranged a sufficient distance in front of the structure 33 and said doors to permit the latter to swing into full open positions.
Secured to transversely disposed base members 10 and projecting upwardly to the rear of each desk structure 24 are pairs of upright members 39 and the upper ends of each of these pairs of members are connected by transversely arranged curved rail 40. These upright members and curved rail constitute seat frames and the upper portion of each frame is suitably connected by brackets such as 41 to the front edge of the desk structure 24 that is disposed immediately to the rear of the seat frames.
Pivotally arranged between the lower portions of each pair of uprights 39 are seats 42 that'are adapted to be occupied by the students or persons receiving instruction and arranged beneath each seat is a hat supportin rack or hanger 43.
t will be understood that there is one seat frame and seat as just described, arranged immediate to the rear of each desk compartment 25 and its hinged cover 29.
Rigidly secured to the underside of each desk structure 24 and located in the same vertical plane with the partitions 34, are longitudinally disposed frames 44, each frame carrying a section of wire netting 45 and these frames function as partitions as well as longitudinally disposed reenforcing members for the entire structure. I
Extending from the front ends of these frames to the rear ends of the next adjacent frames and disposed midway between each pair of seats 43 and seat frames 39, are frames 46 that carry sections 47 of wire netting and which also perform the function of partitions and centrally arranged strengthenlng members.
The frames 44 and 46 are rigidly fixed to each other and to the housings 24.
Secured in any suitable manner to transverse base member 10 and disposed beneath each seat 42, is an open-topped box 48, that may be used as a storage space for overcoats, ra-incoats and overshoes belonging to the students or persons receiving instruction.
At the rear end of the desk assembly the rear pair of seat frames 39 are secured to an uprightframe 49 that projects upwardly from the rear portion of base frame 10.
Thus it will be seen that my improved in struction desk assembly provides separate seats and desks for each student or person receiving instruction and that said assembly also includes storage spaces and compartments for the paraphernalia utilized by the students as well as compartments or storage spaces for the hats and articles of wearing apparel belonging to the students.
The seating arrangement of the assembly is such that the students or persons receiving instructions all. face the instructor and the seat 19, positioned adjacent to the instructors seat enables a student to occupy a position to the side of the instructor while receiving individual instructions. The entire instruction desk assembly is very compact, requires comparatively little floor space and is very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved instruction desk assembly may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
