Description

H. P. WHITAKER.
BED LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-6. 191-8.
1,337,867. Patented Apr. zo, 1920.
ation/w11 HAROLD P. WHITAKER, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
BED-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led September 6, 1918. Serial No. 252,861.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD P. VHITAKER, a citizen of the kUnited States, residing-at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Lamps, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to lighting fixtures and more particularly to an improved bed lamp and bracket therefor adapted to permit attachment of the device to a bed frame at the head or foot portion thereof, and to permit the lamp to be adjusted, so as to facilitate reading or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel lamp bracket of the character specified, capable of being attached to a bed frame or the like, or by modifying the bracket construction, to serve as a molding lamp, whereby light rays may be reflected to a desired place in a room, to facilitate reading or the like.
With the above and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this applica.- tion, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bed lamp bracket applied to a bed, the latter of which is shown in section,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the bracket showing the attaching clamps and also a portion of the bed frame, and
F ig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved bed lamp and bracket is shown as comprising a substantially T-shaped member having a vertical portion 10 and a cross strip 11 formed at right angles thereto and provided with resilient clamping jaws 12 of spring metal and bent in arcuate form to a degree greater than a semi-circle in order to firmly grip a bed frame to prevent accidental displacement. The vertical portion lO'is provided with springv arms 13 horizontally positioned and curved inwardly to a degree greater than a semi-circle to firmly grip a bed or chair frame, while the arms 12 are vertically positioned.
Projecting horizontally from the vertical portion 10 of the clamp or bracket, is an arm 14 to which is pivotally connected a link 15, as shown at 16, a suitable adjusting screw and nut being provided to hold the arm 15 in angular position vertically with respect to the portion 14 and the clamp. A lamp 17 preferably carrying an incandescent electric light, and which bracket 18 is pivoted to the arm or link 15 as shown at 19, through the medium of an extension 20 of the bracket, so as to permit further vertical adjustment of the lamp with respect to the arm produced by the link- 15 and the horizontally projecting portion or stud 14.
In the use of the device, the arms 12 are engaged over the top portion 21 of a bed frame andthe arms 13 are engaged. with a vertical portion 22 of said frame, thereby supporting the bracket and permitting anguiar adjustment of the parts, to permit the lamp to be moved to convenient position to facilitatereading or the like From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my inventionmay be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope -of the invention as claimed.
-by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
A lamp bracket comprising a vertical member having formed thereon and at right angles thereto a cross strip, resi-lient clamping members formed on said cross strip and curved rearwardly to a degree greater than a semi-circle to prevent accidental displacement of the bracket, oppositely curved resilient clamping arms extending at right angles from the lower edges of the vertical member and curved rearwardly and inwardly to a degree greater than a semi-circle, and means on said vertical member for supporting a lamp in adjustable position with respect thereto.
In testimony whereof, I aix my signature hereto.
HAROLD P. WHITAKER.
