Gillie present invention provides a lamp attachment for sewing machines and other machines and articles capable of being easily and quickly attached to or removed from the frame of the machine or article, and when in use adjusted to properly direct the light rays upon the work being accomplished.

In carrying out the invention, I compre head the use of an ordinary electric light bulb and socket, associated with a clamp supported by the means employed for attaching the lamp to the machine or article, the clamp being capable of adjustment to properly direct the light rays upon the work being done, and trictionally maintain the lamp in any given position.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a lamp shield also attached to the lamp supporting means, and adapted to be independently adjusted to a position for use, or to an out of-the-way position as the occasion may require.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the head of a sewing machine showing the application of the invention, and also illustrating by dotted lines how the shield can be moved to an out of the way position.

The present invention employs an ordinary electr c light bulb indicated at h) which is arranged in a suitable socket 11 and receives its current through a conducting wire or cord 12.

While various means may be employed for hing the lamp to the frame --A- of the machine, I preferably make use of a split ring-like clamp 18, the free extremities 14 of which are arranged in spaced parallel relation and connected by a suitable fastening bolt 15. The clamp 13 obviously is adapted to embrace the frame A of the machine as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, and tightened thereto by use of the adjusting bolt 15. The construction permits of the attachment being very quickly associated with or re moved from the machine as the occasion may require.

Embracing the lamp socket 11 is a comparatively small but similar clamp 16, the free parallel extremities 17 of which are connected by an adjusting bolt 18. In accord ance with the present invention however, the clamp 16 is pivotally mounted as at 18' upon the main supporting clamp 13, so that the clamp 16 together with the electric lamp can be conveniently adjusted to properly position the lamp, and thereby properly direct its rays upon the, work being accomplished. The pivotal connection between the respective clamps is such however, that the clamp 16 together with the lamp is trictionally maintained in any given position. The

clamp 16 is mounted upon one side of the main clamp 13, While supported by the opposite side of the same clamp is the lamp shield 19. This shield consists of a substantially flat piece of any suitable material having an out- 11;

line or configuration similar to that illustrated, to protect the eyes of the user from the glare of light, and is of course of a suitioient size to substantially cover one side of the lamp or bulb 10. The shield 19 is pivotally mounted upon the main clamp 13 as at 20, and is held fixed relatively to the latter in any given position by means of a suitable thumb nut 21. The shield 19 is therefore capable of adjustment independently of the lamp or bulb 10, so that the shield can be arranged in position for use as illustrated by full lines in Figure 1, or should it be necessary to elevate the shield while shifting or changing the position of the work upon the machine, the shield can be readily elevated to occupy the dotted line position illustrated in Figure 1. The invention in its entirety is extremely simple in construction, and can be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily understood, I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to 5 what is herein illustrated or described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed. For example, the pivotal connection at 18 may consist of a universal joint to permit universal adjustment of the lamp instead of mere swinging adjustment thereof in one plane, if desired.

What I claim is:

1. The combination with a support, of a split annular resilient clamp adapted to engage said support and having spaced parallel extremities, means connecting said extremities, a relatively small split annular lamp supporting clamp pivotallv mounted on one side of the first mentioned clamp and frictionally held relatively thereto in any given position. said latter mentioned clamp including spaced parallel extremities, means for connecting said extremities, the extremities of one clamp being arranged in right angular relation to the extremities of the other clamp, and a lamp shield mounted on the first mentioned clamp directly opposite the pivotal connection between the respective clamps.

2. The combination with a support, of a split annular resilient clamp adapted to engage the support, a relatively small split annular lamp supporting clamp pivotally mounted on one side of the first mentioned clamp and frictionally held relatively thereto in any given position, each clamp having spaced parallel extremities, means connecting the extremities of each clamp, and an elongated lamp shield pivotally mounted on thefirst mentioned clamp diametrically opposite the pivotal connection between the respective clamps and independently movable in a plane parallel with said lamp.
