Description
J. v.- IRENIUS. MECHANICAL'TOY.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1919- 1 37,705, Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
gvEuoR I .Iremaa ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
V. IRENIUS, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 FERDINAND STRAUSS, IN 0., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH V. IRENIUS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in mechanical toys and has for an object to provide an inexpensive but effective mechanical toy lmown as the balking mule type. In fact one of the objects of my invention is to improve this particular type of toy by providing a very simple arrangement to impart movement to the movable figures which make up a portion of the toy. v
I will now describe the manner of-carrying out my invention and will point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims, reference being had to the drawing, forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of a portion thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view, the section being taken on a line 3-3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional detail view;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary diagrammatic side view of a modified form of my invention;
Fig. 6 is a top plan view thereof; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail view.
The class of toy hereinbefore mentioned consists of a body member 7 having wheels 8and 8 carried by an axle '10, also shafts 1l,between which a figure 12 representing an animal is placed. The animal figure is pivotally connected'on the cross-bar 13 of the shafts 11 and is connected by a wire or rod-14 to a figure 15 movably connected to the body 7. The body 7 also carries a third wheel 16 in order that the animal figure 12 can be supported clear of the element upon which the toy is placed. This class of toy employs a motor-mechanism to propel it, as well as means to impart a rocking motion to the figure 15 and, by means of the connection 14, a rocking motion to the animal figure 12. The motor-mechanism which I employ consists of a coil spring 10 will of course be held or in some Way be prevented from rotating. One end of shaft 20 carries a gear 21 having interrupted teeth 25 to alternately engage or mesh with gears 26 and 27 carried by the axle 10. The rotation of shaft 20 by the spring 16, will rotate gear 24?, causing the teeth 25 thereon to alternately mesh with the gears 26 and 27, thus causing an alternate forward and backward movement on the part of the toy. To impart a rocking movement to the figures 12 and 15, I provide shaft 10 with a crank 28, said cran engaging a yoke 29 carried by a rod 30 pivotally supported by the body 7. The upper end of rod 30 is attached to, or integral with, a cross-bar 31 which passes throu h the seat members or sides of the body The cross-bar 31 is pivotally supported by the said sides 32 and has attached thereto, as indicated in Fig. 3, the figure 15. The rotation of shaft 10 will cause rod 30 to rock, thereby imparting to the figure 15 a rocking movement which will be imparted to the animal figure by means of the rod or wire 14. The alternate forward and backward movement of the toy, as well as the rocking movement of the animal figure 12, produces the appearance of a balking animal, or mule in this instance. Instead of connecting the figure 15 to the rod 30, I may connect the animal figure 12 with the crank 28, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, by a rod 33 having a yoke 34 to engage said crank 28. The forward end of the rod 33 is connected to an arm 35 carried by a tubular trunnion member 36, which is fastened to the figure 12. The cross-bar 13 of the shafts 11 passes through the figure 12 and also through the trunnion 36. In this form of my invention the animal figure will be rocked by the reciprocation of the rod 33.
' To cause the vehicle to move in a circle, I loosely mount one of the wheels upon openings 38 and 39, thereby causing wheel 8 to e rotated by axle 10, as Well as wheel 8.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a toy, a body member, a rotatable axle carried thereby, a crank carried by said axle, wheels carried by'said axle, a rod actuated by said crank, a cross-bar connected to said rod at its upper end, said cross-bar being pivotally supported by the body member, and a to figure secured to said cross-bar arranged or a rocking movement when said rod is actuated by the crank on said axle, said figure being supported clear of the body member.
2. In a toy, a body member, a rotatable axle carried thereby, a crank carried by said axle, wheels carried by said, axle, a rod actuated by said crank, a cross-bar connected to said rod at its upper end, said cross-bar being pivotally supported by the body member, a toy figure secured to said cross-bar and supported clear of the body member arranged for a rocking movement when said rod is actuated by the crank on said axle, shafts carried by the body member, a toy animal figure pivotally secured to the shafts, and means connecting the figure on the body member and the animal figure carried. by the shafts.
3. In a toy, a body member, an axle carried thereby, a crank carried by the axle, a wheel secured to said axle at one end thereof, a second wheel loosely mounted upon said axle at the other end thereof, a rod actuated by said crank, a cross-bar connected to said rod at its upper end, said cross-bar being pivotally supported by the body member, a toy figure secured to said cross-bar and supported clear of the body member arranged for a rocking movement when said rod is actuated by the crank on said axle, shafts carried by the body member, a toy animal figure pivotally secured to the shafts, and means connecting the figure on the body member and the animal figure carried by the shafts.
4. In a toy, a body member, an axle carried thereby, a crank carried by said axle, a .rod, a yoke carried by the rod to'engage said crank, a rockable cross-bar carried by the rod at its upper end, said cross-bar bepivotally connected to said bod and n a figure carried by the cross-bar an rock-Y able therewith, said figure being supported clear of the body member.
5. In a toy, a body member, an axle carried thereby, a crank carried by said axle, a rod, a yoke carried by the rod to engage said crank, a cross-bar carried by the rod at its upper end, said cross-bar being, pivotally connected to said body, a figure carried by the cross-bar, said figure being sup-.
ported clear of the body member, shafts carried by the body member, an -animal figure pivotally connected to said shafts, and a rod connectin said figures.
Signed at New ork city, N. Y., this 16th day of May, 1919.
