STOVE-TRIMMING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20,1920.
Application filed November 22, 1919. Serial No. 340,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JUNenRs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Grafton, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Trimmings, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The invention relates to trimmings for stoves or ranges.
In the manufacture of stoves or ranges it is the usual practice to use nickel-plated strips as a trimming for the shelves and closets above the stove or range. This trimming usually consists of a steel strip having a nickel-plated face and is secured to the sheet metal framework of the stove by means of bolts. This manner of afiixing the strips to the stoves involves considerable labor in drilling the holes and the expense of furnishing bolts, the heads of which have to be nickel-plated. Furthermore, replacement of the strips is difficult and the strips have sharp edges. To obviate these difiiculties I have provided a trimming in which a strip support is welded or otherwise secured to the framework of the stove or range and a finishing strip of relatively thin metal with rounded edges is slipped over the strip support and has its outer surface nickelplated to present a neat and attractive appearance. In case the trimming is damaged in transit it may be readily replaced.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View of astove or range having the trimming embodying the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2- of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the trimming strip embodying the invention.
In the drawings the numeral 4 designates the upper framework of a stove or range including the sheet metal shelf 5 and top 6. The edges of the top and shelf are usually provided with trimming consisting of a metal strip with a nickel-plated surface secured to the sheet metal framework by bolts having nickel-plated heads.
In the present invention the finishing or trimming strip 7 is made of relatively light metal having a nickel-plated outer surface and inwardly extending flanges 8 running lengthwise of the strip with curved edges 9.
This strip 7 is secured to the framework of the stove by means of a supporting metal strip 10 which is itself secured to the depending fiange 10 of the sheet metal frame of the shelf or top in any suitable manner but preferably by spot welding applied at different points along the central portion of the strip so that the trimming strip 7 may be attached to it by sliding said strip 7 over the strip 10, the flanged edges of the strip 7 clampingly engaging the edges of strip 10.
With the above described construction a smooth, unobstructed finished surface is provided with rounded corners and the expense and trouble with the usual bolts is obviated. The trimming can be made and applied more economically than the old form and presents a better appearance. Furthermore, if the trimming should become damaged it may be readily replaced.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a stove or range, the combination, with the metal framework thereof, of a supporting strip secured to the framework along its central portion, and a trimming strip having flanged edges slidably engaging the edges of said supporting strip.
2. In a stove or range, the combination, with the metal framework thereof. of a supporting strip welded to the framework along the central portion of the strip. and a trimming strip slidably mounted on the supporting strip.
3. In a stove or range, the combination, with the metal framework thereof. of a supporting strip welded to the framework along the central portion of the strip. and a trimming strip covering the outer face of said supporting strip and having inwardly extending flanges engaging over the edges of said supporting strip to clamp the strips together, said trimming strip being slidably mounted on said supporting strip.
4. In a stove or range, the combination, with the metal framework thereof. of a supporting strip spot-welded along its central portion to said framework. and a trimming strip covering the outer face of said supporting strip and having inwardly extending flanges with rounded edges engaging over the edges of said supporting strip and slidably mounted thereon.
5. In a stove or range, the combination, With the metal framework thereof having a depending flange, of a supporting strip spot-Welded along its central portion to said flange, and a trimming strip having a nickelplated outer surface, said trimming strip 10 having inwardly extending flanges engaging over the edges ofsaid supporting strip and slidable into position thereon to cover the outer face of said supporting strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN J UNGERS.
