The main object of-thisinvention is-to provide a top for oiice furniture such as desks, tables, filing cabinets,` store furniture such as counters, display tables and the like having a facing of linoleum or like material in which the facing is very securely retained and the structure is attractive and finished in appearance, the attaching means for the parts being concealed.
A further object is to provide a structure having these advantages in which the parts are easily formed and assembled.
Objects relating to details and economies v of construction and operation of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a desk embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section of the parts shown in Fig. 2 in partially disassembled relation.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a desk pedestal formed of sheet metal. The
top comprises a sheet metal top plate 2 having a clown-turned outwardly curved fiange 3 at its edges.
The rim 4 is preferably of channel cross section arranged facing inwardly on the inner side of the flange 3, the rim being preferably engaged in the angle 5 resulting from the flange 3, the upper arm 6 of the rim being preferably secured to the underside of the top plate by spot welding as indicated at 7. Specific means for attaching the rim to the pedestal are not here illustrated as they form no part of this invention.
The facing 8 of linoleum or other suitable nonmetallic material is arranged on the top plate with its edges overlapping the downturned outwardly projecting flanges 3 of the top plate as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The channeled binding strip 9 is arranged to face inwardly with its upper edge 10 in clampingengagement with the facing, the facing being clamped between the upper edge of this strip and the flange 3.
The bindingvstrip is preferably of curved cross section as illustrated, its upper edge 10 being relativelythin so that it readily embeds in the facing, forming a very close joint and also resulting in a very secure grip on the facing.
The binding strip is provided.v with a flange 11 projecting downwardly from its lower edge and engaged by the clamping strip 12. This clamping strip has an inturned flange 13 at its lower edge engaging the under side of the rim, the fiange 13 being tapered to a relatively thin edge thereby providing a comparatively smooth finish at this point which is a matter of considerable advantage as personsusing the desk are likely to grasp the edge of the top and an exposed sharp edge or corner` is avoided by this tapered edge.
The clamping strip 12 is provided with threaded securing studs 14 which are arranged through holes 15 in the rim to receive the nuts 16 within the rim. These studs are arranged in eountersunk holes 17 in the stud supporting strips 18, these strips being secured to the inner side of the clamping strip by spot welding as indicated at 19 with the result that the attaching means are concealed. The binding Strip and clamping strip serve as finishing members for the edge of the top and may be plated or finished in colors as desired.
The facing is very effectively secured and at the same time an attractive finish provided for the edges of the top.
Having thus describedmy invention, wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A top for furniture comprisingl a top plate having a down-turned outwardly curved flange at the edge thereof, an inwardly facing channeled rim secured to said top plate within its said flange, a facing arranged on said top plate with its edge overlappingthe said iange thereof, a curved channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the edge of the facingand the ianged edge of said top plate with its upper edge in clamping engagement with the said facing, the upper edge of Said binding strip being relatively thin, 4said binding strip having a depending flange on its lower edge, and a clamping strip engaging said flange of said binding strip and having attaching studs arranged through said rim and an inturned flange at its lower edge engaging the under side of said rim.
2. A top for furniture comprising a top plate having a down-turned outwardly curved flange at the edge thereof, a rim secured to said top plate within its said flange, a facing arranged on said top plate with its edge overlapping the said flange thereof, a curved channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the edge of the facing and the flanged edge of said top plate with its upper edge in clamping engagement with the said facing, the upper edge of said binding strip being relatively thin, Said binding strip having a depending flange on its lower edge, and a clamping strip engaging said flange of said binding` strip and secured to said rim below the binding strip.
3. A top for furniture comprising a sheet metal top plate having a down-turned outwardly projecting flange at the edge thereof, an inwardly facing angled rim secured to said top plate Within its Said flange, a facing arranged on Said top plate with its edge overlapping the said flange thereof, a channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the edge of the facing and the flanged edge of said top plate with its upper edge in clamping engagement with the said facing, said binding strip having a depending flange on its lower edge, and a clamping strip engaging Said flange of said binding strip and having threaded studs arranged through said rim and an inturned flange at its lower edge engaging the under side of said rim.
l. A top for furniture comprising a sheet metal top plate having a down-turned outwardly projecting flange at the edge thereof, a rin secured to said top plate within its said flange, a facing arranged on said top plate with its edge overlapping the said flange thereof, a channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the edge of the facing and the flanged edge of said top plate with its upper edge in clamping engagement with the said facing, said binding strip having a depending flange on its lower edge, and a clamping strip engaging said flange of Said binding AStrip and secured to said rim.
5. A. top for furniture comprising a top plate having down-turned outwardly curved flanges at the edge thereof, a rim arranged on the inner side of said flange, a facing arranged on said top plate with its edge overlapping the down-turned flange thereof, a curved channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the flanged edge of the top,
the upper edge of said binding strip being relatively thin and in clamping engagement with Said facing, and means for securing said binding strip to said rim.
6. A top for furniture comprising a top plate having a down-turned outwardly projecting flange at the edge thereof, a rim arranged on the inner side of said flange, a facing arranged on said top plate with its edge overlapping the down-turned flange thereof, a channeled inwardly facing binding strip embracing the edge of the facing and the flanged edge of the top with the upper edge of the binding strip in clamping engagement with said facing, and means for securing said binding strip to said rim.
