3 Claims.
This invention relates to doors, and more particularly to an improved door construction for use in store fronts, new homes, and similar locations where glass doors are installed.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved door construction wherein the door is arranged to have substantially, complete visibility "therethrough and wherein the door includes a transparent panel covering the major portion thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved door which is simple in construction, which involves inexpensive components, and which is resistant to any tendency to warp, sag or swell.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved door adapted to support a transparent panel of glass or other transparent material to provide visibility through the major portion of the door area, the improved door being sturdy in construction and light in weight.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an improved door constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational view of the door of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged cross sectional detail view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross sectional detail view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary enlarged elevational detail view of a corner portion of the tubular frame of the door of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the door is designated generally at H and comprises a rectangular inner frame [2 of rigid metal tubing, the frame comprising vertical sections It at the sides and horizontal top and bottom sections 14, the vertical sections being rigidly connected to the horizontal sections at the corners of the frame as by welding or the like, the joints being mitered, as shown at l5 in Figure 5.
Secured to the inner and outer peripheral sur faces of the frame [2 and extending completely therearound are the respective inner and outer wood strips 16 and H, said strips being fastened 2 i as shown in Figures 3 and i, and the bolts being provided with clamping nuts 2| which are received in channeled grooves it provided in the strips Hi. The grooves 20 are covered by filler strips 22 which are fastened in the grooves 20, as by gluing them therein in substantiallyflush relationship with the outer surfaces of the strips I1, as shown in Figure 3. Designated at 23 and 24 are respective facing strips which are secured to the side marginal portions and edges of the strips 16 and H, as shown in Figure 3, the strips 23 and 24 having reduced inner portions 25 which are fitted between the strips [6 and I! and which abut the tubular elements of frame 12. The strips Hand 24 may be secured to the side edges of the strips l6 and ii in any suitable manner, as by nailing, gluing or the like. Secured to the bottom horizontal strips, shown at 23 and 24' and to the bottom horizontal strip elements l! are the superimposed horizontal strip elements 23 which are secured together to provide a wide border at the bottom of the door frame.
Designated at 29 and 30 are respective molding strips secured to the inside surfaces of the frame, said molding strips 29 and 30 being spaced apart to receive therebetween the rectangular panel 3| of transparent material, such as glass or the like.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the wooden elements of the frame are bolted, and may be glued to improve their rigidity. The superimposed bottom elements 28 are securely fastened and glued to the bottom frame elements 23', I1 and 24. The resultant door is very light, strong, and resistant to warping sagging o r swelling. By virtue of the above described construction, a glass or other transparent panel of an area covering the major portion of the door may be employed, providing high visibility through the door, and providing a door of minimum weight for the degree of visibility provided.
While a specific embodiment of an improved door structure has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood thdt various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no linmitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A door comprising a rectangular inner frame of rigid tubing, respective wood strips disposed against the front and rear sides of said inner frame, additional wood strips secured to the outer periphery of said frame and disposed between the first-named wood strips, further wood strips disposed adjacent the inner periphery of said frame, a plurality of bolts extending through said additional wood strips, said further wood strips, and the intervening sides of the frame, means securing said first named wood strips to said additional and further wood strips, and a panel of transparent sheet material secured within the frame adjacent said further wood strips.

A door comprising a rectangular inner frame of metal tubing, respective wood strips disposed against the front and rear sides of said inner frame, said strips extending completely around the inner periphery of the frame, additional wood strips disposed adjacent the outer periphery of said frame and being received between the firstnamed wood strips, further wood strips disposed adjacent the inner periphery of said frame and being received between said first-named wood strips, a plurality of bolts extending through said additional wood strips, said further wood strips, and the intervening sides of the frame, means securing said first named wood strips to said additional and further wood strips, and a panel of transparent sheet material secured within the frame adjacent said further wood strips.

A door comprising a rectangular inner frame of metal tubing, respective wood strips disposed against the front and rear sides of said inner frame and extending completely therearound, additional wood strips disposed adjacent the outer periphery of said frame and being received between the first-named wood strips, further wood strips disposed adjacent the inner periphery of said frame and being received between said first-named wood strips, a plurality of bolts extending through said additional wood strips, said further wood strips, and the intervening sides of the frame, means securing said first named wood strips to said additional and further wood strips, spaced molding strips secured to the inside edge surfaces of said first-named wood strips and the adjacent surfaces of said further wood strips, and a panel of rigid transparent material disposed within the frame with its margins received between said molding strips.
