To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN Roorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Albany, county of Floyd, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for clamping articles that are to be glued together.
In wood working, many articles are built up by gluing together pieces of various dimensions, and of different qualities, in doing so it is necessary to subject the assembled pieces to pressure, to insure contact over the entire surface, and to express surplus glue. In some branches of the art, as in the construction of rim bound round top work it is desired to aflix linear strips of valuable wood to the sides of a polygon shaped core, built up of inferior wood, the strips being applied to all sides of the polygon at the same time.
An object of this invention is the provision of means whereby in the construction of round top work as described, pressure may be exerted upon all sides of the polygon at the same time.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, wherein is set forth an embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications may be resorted to as come within the scope of the appended claims.

The device comprises a stand 10 consisting of an I beam 11 of suitable length. Legs 12- are secured to the heads 13 of the beam at each end thereof whereby the beam is upheld with its stem -1lin a horizontal position. A pair of journal blocks l6, l7 are secured on the stem at each end of the beam and a journal mediate its length in alinement with the end blocks. A shaft 19 is slidablypositioned in said journals. The shaft is provided intermediate the center bearing and the ends with right and left hand screw threads 20, 2l. A pair of head blocks 22, 23-, which operatively engage with the screws 20, 21, have lateral projections -2%,
25, which rest upon the upper edges of the heads of the beam. The blocks depend through openings 26, 27- in the stem, and plates 28, 29-- secured to their under sides bear against the lower edges of the heads and hold the blocks in place and guide them in their movement. A hand wheel 30 on the end of the shaft provides means for its manipulation. The arrangement being such that by rotating the shaft, the blocks 22, 23, may be caused to approach or recede from the center of the shaft, and the shaft and the blocks may he slid as a unit in either direction. A pair of parallel. arms 31-, connected at their outer ends to blocks -32 are secured to and project from each side of the beam centrally thereof. A shaft -34 is journaled in the lower portion of the blocks 32 and in a bearing 36 secured to the under side of the stem of the beam and is adapted to both rotate and slide therein. A pair of head blocks 37, 38- positioned between the arms 31- have lateral projections 39 which ride upon the upper edge thereof. Plates i0 secured to the lower ends of the blocks 37, 38, bear against the lower edges of the arms and hold the blocks in place and guide them in their movements. The shaft 34, is provided with right and left hand screw threads 35 which are in engagement with the blocks 37, 38. The arrangement being such that when the shaft is rotated, by means of a hand wheel 4lthe blocks will advance or recede from the center and that at the same time they may he slid as a unit in either direction. A contact block t2 the face of which is disposed at an angle to conform to the objects to be acted upon, is fastened to each of the head blocks 22, 23.
In operation a core as 45- is placed upon the stand with its long side against the head block 37, a strip as 46 is placed against the opposite side of the core, the hand wheel 41, manipulated to advance the --18- is positioned on the stem inter head block and clamp the strip lightly 11o gaged under a hook on the opposite block 32. The arm 49, bears upon the core and prevents any tendency it may have to buckle under pressure. llhe' hand wheels are then turned to exert sufficient pressure to cause the strips to seat properly. If the point of pressure on a strip is not properly located to close the joint, the clamp may be released, the core shifted to change the point of contact, without loosening the other set of clamps.
Having thus described my invention so that those skilled in the art pertaining thereto can make and use the same, I claim:
1. In a device as characterized, a frame, a shaft, right and left hand threads on said shaft, heads slidably associated with said frame, and in operative connection with said threads whereby said heads may be caused to approach or recede from each other, the shaft being rotatably and slidably mounted whereby it may be moved longitudinally together with associated heads.
2. In a device as characterized, a frame, a pair of shafts rotatably and slidably mounted on said frame at an angle to each I other and in different planes, right and left hand threads on each of said shafts and heads slidably associated with said frame and operatively connected with said threads, the arrangement being such that by rotation of a shaft, the heads associated therewith will approach or recede and that longitudinal movement of the shaft will carry the heads with it. 7 7

In a device as characterized, a stand comprising an I beam supported with its stem in a horizontal plane, bearings on said stem, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said bearings, right and left handed threads on said shaft, there being openings in the stem coincident with said threads, head blocks slidably positioned upon the upper edges of the heads of the beam, said heads depending through said openings and operatively associated with said threads.
4:. In a device as characterized,a stand comprising an I beam supported with its stem 1n a horizontal plane, bearings on said stem, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said bearings, right and left handed "threads on said shaft, there being openings in the stem coincident with said threads, head blocks slidably positioned upon the upper edges of the heads of the beam, said heads depending through said openings and operatively associated with said threads, brackets attached to the heads of the beam centrally thereof and extendedlaterally therefrom, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said brackets, right and left handed threads in said shaft, and head blocks slidably positioned on the brackets and operatively engaged with said threads.
