Taall fwtom t may concern:
Be it known .that I, GEORGE A, SWEET, a citizenvof the United States, residing at` Ashtabula, in the county of Ashtabula and State "`of Ohio, have invented new and useful vImprovements 4in Grinding Devices, of which,
the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates the provision ofl a grinding device especiallyintended for usein connection' with a leatherl splitting machine, although susceptible fory use in other connections. v
In machines of the above mentioned character the cutting blade is in the nature of a continuousband trained over pulleys to travel ata considerably high rate of speed, in view of which fact the blade must be reasonably soft to make the turns. lThe present .method of sharpening these bands resides in passing the bands between a pair of rapidly revolving grinding wheels, which provides the band with a rough and ltender edge, that does more or less damage and inferior work. With the band in this condi tion the'cutting edge' is often turned over by the shot or thorns frequently found in hides, vthereby rendering the hide beyond repair. Considerable time is also spent in grinding the breaks out of the band, with a resultant waste of the latter.
It is therefore the purpose of my invention to provide a grinding device embodying among other features, a pair of revolving grinding elements which are arranged to lie flat against the upper and lower sides respectively of the cutting edge of the band or blade to provide a smooth beveled edge, the grinding elements being 1 capable of adjustment to dierent angles orinclinations 49 to accommodate themselves to the bevel of the blade, thereby making the cutting edge both keen and tough, which splits the leather clean and smooth, and in amore uniform degree. 1
Another important characteristic of the invention resides in the provision of a yieldable means for holding the grinding elements in contact with the 'blade under any desired degree of pressure, the yieldable 5 means functioning to absorb the thrust with a view of allowing the grinding elements to revolve freely, theflatter being actuated b the band passing between the same. The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following description is read' in -connection specification' f Letters Patent.
Patented oats, 191e.- I'Application led March28, 1916. Serial lim-87,820. i I i y vwith the `accompanying drawings, the in-`r` vention residingin the construction, combination and arrangement of parts asclaimed.-
y "In the drawings formlng part of this specication like numerals of reference indicate similar wherein Figure 1 isa fragmentary side elevation of the leather splitting machine, illustrated to show the manner of associating the grindparts in the several views and ing device therewith. Fig. 2 is a side elevavj tion of one of the grinding devices as a unit.
4Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the invention showing vthe different grinding devices arranged at an .angle with respect to each other. l Flg. 4 1s a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a vsectional view taken on line 5-5of Fig. 4.
The use of the invention in connection.,-
with a leather splitting machine sufficiently characteristic ofits utility and ad'- mirably illustrates the invention', and will constitute one of its most useful applications. For this reason the description is addressed to'the cooperation of the invention" with a leather splitting machine, but itis to be understood however, that the device is susceptible for use in other connections, and
Athat such general application is contemplated `by the claims. s
Referring more particularly to the drawingsin detailk l0 indicates generally a leather splitting machine of any suitable construction, embodying of course thecutting blade 11 which consists of an endlessband trained over the pulleys 12. `Machines'-of this character are generally provided with grinding' elements 13 arranged in`the manner shown in Fig. 1, and which elements gri-nd the blade very fast with a resultant rough and tender edge which does inferior work. These grinding devices are to be replaced by thel device forming the subject matter of my invention.
In the present instance the invention embodies a base 14 adapted to be secured' to the floor in any suitable manner, and from which rises a standard 15 supportingy at its upper end an iron strap 16 adapted to eX- tend across the bed plates` of the machine.
The standard l15 supports two units or grinding devices which are identical in construction, and a brief description of.y one will suiice for both. Y
l Secured to the stendard 15 isl a bracket 17 a pair of grinding elements slidably supthe upper and lower sides of the blade,l
means for holding said elements in different inclined positions with respect to the blade, means for exerting pressure on said elements,\and means -for regulating the pressure exerted by said last 'mentioned means.'
3. In a grinding device, the combination with a running blade, of avertical standard, a pair ofl revolving grinding elements mounted on said standard for vertical swinging movement, said elements being ar-y ranged to engage respectively the upper and lower sidespoiI the blade, means'ffor exerting pressure onsaid elements, and means for regulating the pressure exerted by said last mentioned-means, and a combined guide and wiper for said blade secured to said standard and disposed at one side of said elements.
4. In a grinding device, the combination with a running blade, of a vertical standard, clamps secured thereto and having arms projecting laterally from the opposite sides thereof, a grinding device mounted on each of said arms, and including a bracket supported for vertical swinging movement, a
revolving grinding element supported on said bracket, and said elements being arranged to engage respectively the upper and lower sides of the blade, means for holding the brackets in adjusted position, means for exerting pressure on said elements, and means for regulating the pressure' exerted by said last mentioned means.
5. In a grinding device, the combination with a running blade, of a vertical standard, clamps adjustably mounted thereon, arms projecting laterally from said clamps and disposed at the opposite sides of the standard, a grinding device for each clamp, i1|- cluding a substantially U-shaped bracket swingingly mounted on said arm of thaclamp, a shaft supported by said bracket, u revolving grinding element carried by tl'nl shaft, said elements being arranged to en gage respectively the upper and lower side.- of the blade, means for' holding said bracket:l in adjusted position, a spring encircling tin` shaft of 'each grinding device for exerting,y pressure against its grinding element, and
means for regulating the tension of said spring.
In testimony whereof Iaix my signaturey in presence of two witnesses.
