To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN PLATT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Byron Works, Bouverie Road, Harrow, in the county of Middlesex, England, 11..- LIAM PLA'rr and HENRY PLATT, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at 108 Rue de la Fontaine, Boubaix, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to the Drums or Cylinders of Carding- Engines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the drums or cylinders of carding engines, burring apparatus, waste openers and the like, (hereinafter referred to as carding engines), the chief object being to reduce the cost of manufacturing and clothing the said drums or cylinders and to enable the same to be clothed with rapidity.
As is Well understood, the clothing of the said drums or cylinders with saw toothed or serrated metal wires or strips is usually effected by forming a spiral groove in the periphery of the drum. into which the saw toothed or serrated metal strip or wire is inserted and secured in place. This method, however, is extremely costly besides necessitating the use of metal drums or cylinders.
According to the present invention the peripheral surface of the drum or cylinder, which may be composed of wood, metal or other suitable material, is prepared for the reception of the clothing by lapping or spirally winding thereon a flat strip or band of metal of any desired width, one or both edges of the said strip being upturned or flanged so as to accommodate and to serve to retain in position between the edges or flanges which are thus provided, the saw toothed wires or strips which form the cloth ing. Owing to this arrangement the usual operation of grooving the peripheral surface of the drum for the purpose of ac commodating the saw toothed wires is rendered unnecessary, as the upturned edges or flanges of the metal band form a continuous spiral surface around the drumand act as supports for any desired number of saw toothed-wires. The band is fixed to the drum by screws, nails or other suitable attaching means.

Fig. 9 is an elevation of a pair of carding rollers constructed in accordance with the present invention and in which tne rollers are provided at their ends with circumferential metal bands which act as distance pie es for insuring the correct positioning of the rollers and of the card clothing carried thereby relatively to each other.
A is the drum or cylinder; B is the aforesaid strip or band and C is the saw toothed wire which constitutes tl e card clothing. In Figs. l to 9 the strip or band B is provided with a single upturned flange (Fig. 1) this being the preferred form. As shown at Fig. Q, the strip or band B may first be lapped spirally around the drum 5i and secured in place in suitable manner, thus pro .luc-
ing a drum as shown at Fig. 5 which is ready for the reception of the saw toothed wires C which are to form the clothing of the drum, the wires 0 being thereafter lapped on between the upturned edges of the strip or band B. Alternatively the band B and a suitable number of saw toothed wires may be lapped on simultaneously as shown at Fig. 6, or as shown at Fig. 7 the band may be prepared initially with the requisite number of saw toothed wires accommodated therein or attached thereto and the composite band may be applied to the drum in a single winding operation as shown at Fig. '7. At the beginning and at the end of the lappin operation the ends of the strip or band 6 as also the saw toothed wires 0 are suitably cut or tapered to conform to the shape of the drum A.
The application of the clothing and of the supports therefor can thus be effected expeditiously and cheaply and any number of saw toothed wires can be employed and packed as closely as desired in the space between the upturned flanges of the metal band. The aforesaid saw toothed wires may be of any suitable or usual cross section and may be provided with a suitable foot or flange of suiiicient width to act as a distance piece and to afford the desired support for the saw toothed wires.
At the present time considerable difficulty is experienced in correctly locating the cooperating pairs of drums or cylinders at the requisite distance apart for the proper treatment of the wool or other material to be dealt with, the adjusting operation being one of great delicacy and requiring the exercise: of considerable skill owing to the fact that the card clothing is liable to be dam: aged or destroyed should the rollers be brought into too close proximity to each other. With the object of insuring the accurate spacing apart of the cooperating pairs of rollers in a simpleand expeditious manner the arrangement shown at Fig. 9 may be adopted. To this end the swift rollers a and the working rollers a are provided at their ends with circumferential metal bands a a and a a respectively, the thickness of which is slightly greater than the height of the card clothing. Owing to this arrangement and when the swift and working rollers are mounted in position, the bands a a and a a contact with each other and thus insure that the card clothing is correctly spaced apart.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A method of clothing the drums or cylinders of carding engines which consist in lapping or spirally winding upon the peripheral surface thereof, a flat'strip or band having an upturned edge or edges, and card clothing, said card clothing being supported upon the strip or band and between the upturned edges thereof.
2. A method of clothing the drums or cylinders of carding engines which consists in 'lapping or spirally winding upon the pewhich has an upturned flange or flanges which provide applied grooves upon the peripheral surface thereof and saw-toothed wires or strips supported within said grooves constituting the: card clothing.
4. A drum or cylinder for a carding. en-
gine comprising a flanged metal strip which is applied in such manner to the drum or: cylinder as to provide applied grooves upon: the peripheral surface thereof, in combina tion with toothed or serrated wires or strips accommodated'therein, constituting the card clothing.
5. A drum or cylinderfor a carding engine having a metal strip apphed thereto:
