Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoLLIN C. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States anda resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Time-Controlled Dead-Locking Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in time controlled dead lock, designed more particularly for use on store doors, the object being to provide a lock so constructed and arranged in connection with, time mechanism, that the door may be locked for a predetermined time against allvkeys of the lock except a key, herein referred to as a master key, in connection with a second key herein referred to as a clerks key, and at the expiration of such time be transformed by the automatic time mechanism into a lock operable by the clerks key alone.
A further object is to provide a lock of the character above referred to with a bolt adapted to be projected at-either side of the lock case so that the lock may be used at either side of the door.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists broadly in a bolt, a dead locking devicecontrolled by time. mechanism, key mechanism forshifting'the bolt and key mechanism for disengaging the dead locking device whereby the bolt will be free to be actuated by the bolt shifting mechanism.
My invention further consists in the parts and combination of parts and in .details of construction as wlll be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of the lock, the cover plate of the casing being removed and shown at the side; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the time mechanism removed; Fig. 3
is a View in transverse vertical section; Fig.
4: is a detached view of the driving wheel-of the time mechanism and the lever actuated thereby for withdrawing the bolt dead-locking means, and Fig. 5 is a view in vertical section through the bolt and locking and a deadlocking means for the latter.
\ 10 represents a lock casing adapted to be secured to the inner face of the door, and 11 secured to the latter by nuts 12 screwed onto the posts 13 which are secured to the casing and pass through holes in the cover plate. The cover plate is provided with a glass covered peep opening 14:, through which the dial numerals of the time mechanism may be seen from the rear, and with an opening 15 for the key for winding up the time mechanlsm.
The details of the time mechanism form no. part of my invention, hence only such features thereof as cooperate with my lock are shown and herein referred to.
The bolt 16 is mounted in openings in the opposite sides of the lock casing so that either end thereof may be the locking end lof the bolt, thus adapting it for right and shifting the bolt longitudinally from its locked to its unlocked position.
Mounted in the housing 20* at the upper part of the casing 10, and above the bolt 16, are the spring pressed dogs 20 and 21, one of which enters the slot 18 for locking the bolt when the latter is projected at one side of the casing 10, and the other cooperates with said slot for locking the bolt in its unlocked position.
When the bolt is projected at the left, as in full lines in Fig. 1, the dog 20 enters slot 18 for locking the bolt in its projected position, and is lifted and removed from the said slot by its contact with the end of cam 17, which as before explained is actuated by the clerks key. When the bolt is retracted the dog 21 falls into the slot 18 and holds the bolt against movement until actuated by the clerks key. When the locking end of the bolt is at the opposite side of the casing, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the dog 21 enters the slot 18 and retains the bolt in its locked position, while the dog 20 locks it when retracted.
It will thus be seen'that the dogs 20 and 21 operate respectively to dog the bolt in its. projected and retracted position, hence sents the locking'position ofthe bolt, the

The slot'18 is located adjacent the rear face of the bolt, and in rear of the plane of the recesses 22 and 23 "so thatthe path of movement of the said 35" recesses is notin the plane of'the plunger 21.
In applying the lock to a door, if the full f line position, Fig.1 of the bolt, be its looking position, recess'22will be closed by the plug 25, whereas if the dotted line position, be its "locking position, the screw plug would be applied in recess 23 and recess 22 be left open.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, key mechanism for actuating same, time controlled mechanism for deadlocking the bolt against said key mechanism, and a master key mechanism for disengaging the time controlled deadlock from the bolt whereby the latter may t ien be actuated by its key mechanism.
2. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, time controlled means for deadlocking the bolt, key mechanism for actuating the bolt when the latter is not deadlocked and independent key mechanism for withdrawin the deadlocking means prior to the time set for the release of the bolt by the time mecha nism thus permitting the bolt to be retracted by its key mechanism.
3. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, dogging means, and deadlocking means for the bolt, key mechanism for actuating the dogging means, time mechanism for disengaging the deadlocking means, and key mechanism independent of the time mechanism for disengaging the deadlocking means thus leaving the bolt free to be retracted by its key mechanism.
4. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, dogging means for the same, key mechanism for actuating the dogging means and bolt, a deadlocking plunger, time mechanism for disengaging the deadlocking plunger from the bolt, and second key mechanism for disengaging the deadlocking plunger prior to the time set for the operation of the time mechanism.
5. In a lock, the combination of a casing, a bolt adapted to be projected at either side of the latter whereby the lock may be used on a right or left hand door, two dogs one of which dogs the bolt when projected and the other when retracted. and means for deadlocking the bolt in each of its positions.
6. In a lock, the combination of a casing, a bolt adapted. to be projected at either side of the latter whereby the lock may be used at either side of a door and two dogs one of which dogs the bolt in looking position and the other dogs the bolt when retracted, and which operate reversely when the locking position of the bolt is reversed.
7. In a lock, the combination of a lock casing, a bolt adapted to be projected at either side of the casing and provided with ing the bolt, key mechanism for actuating the bolt when the latter is not deadlocked, and time mechanism for withdrawing said plunger at a predetermined time.
9. In a lock, the combination of a lock casing, a bolt adapted to be projected at either side thereof and provided with two recessed seats, a removable plug closing one of said seats, a deadlocking plunger adapted to enter the open seat for deadlocking the bolt, key mechanism for actuating the bolt when the latter is not deadlocked, and a second key mechanism for disengaging the plunger from the bolt so as to permit the bolt to be actuated by the first mentioned key mechanism.
10. In a lock, the combination of a lock casing, a bolt adapted to be projected at either side thereof and provided with two recessed seats either of which may be closed by a removable plug, a deadlocking plunger adapted to enter the open seat for deadlocking the bolt, key mechanism for actuating the bolt when the latter is not deadlocked, time mechanism connected with the plunger for withdrawing it from its seat in the bolt at a predetermined time and a second key mechanism for withdrawing the said plun ger from the bolt prior to the operation of the time mechanism.
11. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, a deadlocking device for same. time controlled mechanism for disengaging the dead locking device from the bolt. kev mechanism for actuating the time controlled mecha nism whereby the bolt may be released from the deadlock prior to the time set for its release by the time mechanism and independent means for retracting the bolt after the withdrawal of the deadlocking device.
