To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS S'rEnNEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mandan, in the county of Morton and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks, and an object of the invention is to provide a lock, which will require a plurality of keys, movable through predetermined arcs and at predetermined times for either locking or unlocking the lock structure, thereby providing a lock particularly adapted for use upon safe deposit vaults, safes or other devices, where it is desirable to have the said device opened only in the presence of two or three persons.
Another object of the invention is to rovide a lock structurein which the slidable bolt, is restrained from movement bya plu rality of spring operated tumblers adapted to be operated by keys for permitting slidable movement of the locking bolt, which bolt is moved longitudinally by certain of the keys after they have operated the tumblers and also to provide an auxiliary locking lug, carried by a flat spring and engaging in a recess in the slidable' lockingbolt, which tumbler must be moved out of the recess, by an outward movement of one of the keys during operation of the lock to permit the movement of the locking bolt, and further to provide a plurality of tumbler re ceiving notches in the sliding bolt, for each tumbler, which will require successive operations of the tumblers, in either looking or unlocking the lock structure.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, 10 and 11 indicate the supporting plates of the lock structure between which the locking bolt,12 is slidably mounted. The longitudinal movement of the locking bolt structure 12 is guided by suitable guides 13 and this locking bolt has a reduced portion 1 1 on one end, which is adapted for projection into the keeper when the lock structure isin a locked position.
The main body 15 of the locking bolt structure 12 is provided with a plurality of spaced notches 16 in one side thereof, which are adapted to receive therein the angular portion 17 of a pivotally mounted tumbler 18. The tumbler 18 is provided with a substantially hook shaped extension 19, which projects beneath the body 15 of the locking bolt 12, extending beyond the edge of the body opposite to that upon which the tumbler pivoted and in the path of the bit 20 of the key 21. The stem of the key is hollow, or provided with an axial recess for fitting over the key-post 22. A spring 23 engages the tumbler 18' and urges the tumbler toward the body 15 for urging the portion 17 thereof in one of the notches 16,to lock the body 15 and consequently the entire bolt structure 12 against sliding movement. The usual ob struction 24. is provided to prevent the operation of these tumblers 18 by any key except the key 21. The edge of the body 15, alongside of which the key 21 is mounted is provided with cut-out portions 25 forming shoulders 26, against which the bit of the key is adapted to engage to longitudinally shift the locking bolt 12.
A second tumbler 27 is pivotally mounted upon a suitable pin 28 upon the opposite side of the body 15 from the tumbler 18 and this tumbler 27 is also provided with the lateral shoulder or portion 29 adapted to engage in any oneof a plurality of notches 30 formed in the edge of the body 15 opposite to the edge in which the notches 16 are formed.
The tumbler 27 has an arcuate portion 30 which'extendsover the body 15 of the lock ing bolt 12 and presents a convexed surface for engagement by the bit 31 of the key 32 which key like the key 21 has a recess in its stem for engagement over a key post carried by the plate 11. The bit 31 of the key 32 is shaped to pass over an obstruction 34 to permit rotary movement of the key to operate its part of the lock structure. A spring 35 engages the tumbler 27, and urges the angled shoulder 29 thereof toward the adjacent edge of the body 15.
The edge of the body 15 adjacent that which the key 32 is mounted is provided with cut-out portions 36 forming abutments against which the bit 31 of the key 32 is adapted to engage for longitudinally moving the locking bolt structure 12 by rotary movement of the key 32.
Positioned at the side of the body 15 of the locking bolt 12 upon which the tumbler 18 is mounted and near the end of the looking bolt body opposite that near which the tumbler 18 is mounted is pivotally mounted a substantially U-shaped tumbler 37 provided with a lateral enlargement 38 for engagement in any one of the notches 39 formed in the adjacent edge of the body plate. The inner side or leg 40 of the U- shaped tumbler 37 is positioned beneath the body 15, and in the path of the bit 41 oi the key 42. This key 42 is adapted to be rotatably mounted upon a key post 43 and a suitable lug or obstruction 44 is provided, being formed upon the plate 11 to prevent operation of the tumbler 11 by a key of any construction except that of the key 42. This post 43 and lug 44 are positioned beneath the body plate 15 and the latter is provided with a longitudinally extending cut out portion 45 to permit the insertion of the key 42 through the body plate for operating the tumbler 37 to move the lateral extension 33 out of either of the notches 39. A flat spring 46 engages the outer side of the tumbler 37 for urging the lateral cxtension 38 into one of the notches 39.
The body 15 is provided with a longitudinal. slot 47 through which a pin 48 extends. the said pin and slot forming means for guiding the longitudinal movement 01 the locking bolt structure 12.
The body is provided with a recess 49 in its outer face in which a lug 50 is urged by means of a flat spring 51. The Hat spring 51 is carried by the plate 10 and has a laterally extending lug 52 formed thereon. and positioned to be engaged by the outer edge of the bit 20 of the key 21 so that when the key is drawn outwardly it will spring the lug 50 out of the recess 49 permitting longitudinal movement of the locking bolt 12 under action of the respective keys. Then turn the key 32 to the right releasing the locking bolt at the third recess 30 and turn the key 21 to the left releasing the locking belt at the second recess 16 and then pushing the locking bolt inwardly until it is locked at the outermost or first recess 39 by the tumbler 3'7 and at the recess 49 by the lug 50. Turn the key 42 to the right to release the locking bolt at the outermost recess 39 and turn the key 32 to the right and the bey 21 to the left, forcing the locking bolt inwardly until it looks at the outermost recess 30 by the tumbler 27 and at the outermost or first recess -16 by the tumbler 18.
Complete the turn of each key and with draw all of the keys which completes the operation of unlocking the lock.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, but;
I claim:
,1. In a lock, the C(lll'lbllltltlOl] of a locking bolt provided with a plurality of recesses therein, tumblers for locking engagement in said recesses, keys for operating said tumblers, one of said tumblers normally lying out of locking engagement with the locking bolt while the remainder are in looking engagement with their respective recesses.
2. In a lock, the combination of a locking bolt provided with a plurality of recesses in the side edges thereof, tumblers for looking engagement in said recesses, keys for rocking said tumblers, one of said tumblers normally lying out of locking engagement with the locking bolt while the remainder are in looking engagement with their respective recesses, said second named tumbler adapted to move into locking engagement with its recess when the other tumblers are moved out of locking positions and the bolt is slightly advanced.
' 3. In a lock, the combination of a locking bolt provided with a plurality of recesses in the side edges thereof, tumblers for looking engigagement in said recesses, keys for rocking said tumblers, one of said tumblers normally lying out of locking engagement with the locking bolt while the remainder are in looking engagement with their respec the recesses, said second named tumbler adapted to move into locking engagement with its recess when the other tumblers are moved out of locking positions and the bolt is slightly advanced. said bolt having a re cess in one face and a spring actuated lug adapted to seat in said facial recess.

In a lock, the combination of a locking bolt provided with a plurality of recesses in the side edges thereof, tumblers for locking engagement in said recesses, keys for rocking said tumblers, one of said tumblers normally lying out of locking engagement with the locking bolt while the remainder are in locking engagement with their respective re cesses, said bolt having a recess in one face, and a spring actuated lug adapted to seat in said facial recess and to be unseated by slight outward movement oi? one of said keys.

In a lock, the combination of a locking bolt having a series of recesses in the side edges thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series to lock the bolt, keys for rocking said. tumblers and advancing the bolt, said tumblers adapted to successively engage in the recesses of their respective series during the locking or unlocking operation of the lock structure, one side edge of said bolt provided with a second series of recesses, a pivoted U-shaped tumbler adapted to engage in the recesses of the second series at nredetermined times during the locking orunlocking operation of the lock.
6. in a lock, the combination of a locking bolt having a series of recesses in the side edges thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series to lock the bolt, keys for rocking said tumblers and advancing the bolt, said tumblers adapted to successively engage in the recesses of their respective series during the locking or unlocking operation of the lock structure, one side edge of said bolt provided with a second series of recesses, a pivoted U-shaped tumbler adapted toengage in the recesses of the second series at predetermined times during the locking or unlocking operation of the lock, said bolt having a recess in one face and a spring actuated lug adapted to seat in said facial recess.

In a lock, the combination oi a locking bolt having a series of recesses in each side thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series to lock the bolt, keys for melting said tumblers and advancing the bolt, said tumblers adapted to successively engage in the recesses oi? their respective series during the looking or unlocking operation of the lock structure, said bolt having a recess in one iiace, and a spring actuated lug adapted to seat in said facial recess and to be 'unseated by slight outward movement oi said kev.
R. In a lock, the combination of a locking i spring and adapted to seat in said facial recess, said flat spring having a lateral e2;- tension formed thereon and adapted to be engaged by one of said keys to unseat the lug upon the slight outward movement of the key.
9. 111 a lock, the combination of a locking bolt having a series of recesses in each side edge thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series to lock the bolt, keys for rocking said tumblers and advancing the bolt, said tumblers adapted to successively engage in the recesses of their respective series during the locking and unlocking operation of the lock structure, said locking bolt provided with a recess in one face, a flat spring, a lug carried by said spring and adapted to seat in said facial recess, said fiat spring having a lateral extension formed thereon and adapted to be engaged by one of said keys to unseat the lug upon the slight outward movement of the keys, shoulders formed upon said bolt and adapted to be engaged by certain of the keys during rotation and subsequent to the rocking of the tumblers to advance the bolt.

In a lock structure, the combination of a locking bolt having a series of recesses in each side edge thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series to lock the bolt, keys for rocking said tumblers, said tumblers adapted to successively engage in the recesses of the respective series during the locking or unlocking operation of the lock structure, shoulders formed upon said bolt and adapted to be engaged by certain of the keys during rotation and subsequent to the rocking of the tumblers to advance the bolt.

In a lock structure, the combination of a locking bolt having a series of recesses in each side edge thereof, pivoted tumblers adapted to engage in one recess of each series, to lock the bolt, keys for rocking said tumblers, said tumblers adapted to succes sively engage in the recesses of the respective series during the locking or unlocking open ation of the lock structure, shoulders formed upon said bolt and adapted to be engaged by certain of the keys during rotation and sub- F sequent to the rocking of the tumblers to advance the bolt, one side edge of said bolt provided with a second series of recesses, and a pivoted U-shapcd tumbler adapted to engage in the recesses of the second series at predetermined times during the locking or unlocking operation of the lock.
