Be it known that I, EDWARD IVILLEY IVIARVEL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Key '-Locks, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to looks adapted for use in connection with safety deposit boxes an 1 similar inclosures. It is the usual practice of lessors of such boxes to provide them with locks requiring two keys to operate them, to wit, a guard key, retained by the lessor, and a main key furnished to the lessee, and when there are two lessees the main keys furnished to the respective lessees of any given box are precisely alike. Such an arrangement is objectionable because either lessee, in the absence of the other, may open the box.
Iherefore, it is an object of my invention to provide a lock requiring three keys to operate it, to wit, a guard key, and two different main keys. the latter being respectively furnished to the two lessees; so that the presence or consent of both lessees is necessary to the opening of the lock.
As hereinafter described, my invention in cludes a lock having a rotary key hub with two separate keyways, respectively for a guard key and for the two main lessees keys; a slide bolt arranged to be operated by rotation of said key hub; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accor lance with the position thereof; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism operatively connected with the main tumbler ,mechanism; the arrangement being such that when said bolt is in locked position the guard tumbler mechanism prevents the operation of the main tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operated by the guard key, to permit the main tum-. blers to be operated, and some of the latter must be operated by the first lessees key to set the auxiliary tumblers in positionto perwit the bolt to be shifted tounlocked pos1- tion, by operation of the main tumblers, by I the second lessees key.

Said guard lever 44 has the stump 50 adapted to enter the gatings 51 of the guard tumblers 53 which are pivoted on said stationary stud 38 and each provided with a spring 54 bearing at its free end upon said casing 2 and tending to turn said tumblers 53 into the position shown in Figs. III and VI, in which position they are stopped by their projections 56 encountering said stump 50. Said guard lever 44 has the arm 57 carrying the stud 58 which is adapted to be encountered by the releasing tumbler 59 which is pivoted on said stationary stud 38 and has the spring 60 bearing at its free end upon said casing 2 and tending to turn said tumbler into the position shown in Figs. III to VI inclusive. It may be observed that when said guard lever 44 is turned to the position shown in Figs. IV and V its stud 58 encounters said releasing tumbler 59 so that said guard lever 44 may be released and restored to its normal position, shown'in Figs. III and VI, by downward movement of said releasing tumbler 59. Said main tumblers 12 have extensions 62 respectively adapted to encounter the pins 63 on the respective auxiliary tumblers 64 which are mounted to vertically reciprocate on the bearing lugs 65 and 66 of the fence 68 which, as best shown in Fig.
.VII, is pivotally connected with the slide bolt 1 by the screw 69 and has the spring 71 with its free end bearing against said casing 2, tending to turn said fence into the position shown in Fig. VII. Each of said auxiliary tumblers 64 has a gating 7 2 adapted to receive the stump 73 carried by the detent lever 37, as shown in Fig. V
It may be observed that the free ends of the springs 14 of the main tumblers 12 bear upon the pins 63 of the auxiliary tumblers 64 and tend to thrust the latter downwardly to the position shown in Fig. III; and pres sure of the stump 73 against said tumblers 64, when the detent 37 is rocked into released 31 and second main key 32, respectively shown in Figs. X, XI and XII, are used to manipulate said look as follows :The lock mechanism being in the position shown in Figs. I, II and III; the guard key 30 is inserted in the keyway 23 in the hub 18 and the latter turned, clockwise, approximately sixty degrees, the shape of said recess 21 in the slide bolt 1 being such as to permit corresponding movement of the cam 20 without shifting said bolt. Said key 30 is bitted so as to sweep the tumblers 53 into position to receive the stump 50 in their gatings 51 and to then turn said guard lever 44 into the position shown in Fig. IV, by the projection 46 on the cam 20 encountering said shoulder 47 on said lever. Thereupon, said hub 13 being returned to its normal position, shown in Flgs. III and IV, and said key 30 being withdrawn, the lock is in condition to be operated by the first main or lessees key 31 shown in Fig. XI. Said main key 31 being then inserted in the keyway 24 of the hub 18, the latter is turned, clockwise, from the position shown in Fig. IV to the position shown in Fig. V. Said key 31 is so bitted as to shift all of said main tumblers 12, and thereby raise all of the auxiliary tumblers 64 until their gatings 7 2 register with their stump 73, carried by the detent lever 37, whereupon, the spring 71 swings the fence 68 to the right, as shown in Fig. V, so that said gatings 72 receive the stump 7 3 as shown in said figure, thus setting the mechanism so that the slide bolt 1 may be shifted to unlocked position by the second main or lessees key 32. Said key is so bitted as to shift all of said main tumblers 12 except the outer one, (which does not need to be shifted), to present their gatings 11 in alinement with the stump 10 on the bolt 1 so that the latter may be retracted. It is to be understood that as said main tumblers 12 are operated by the first main key 31 merely to raise the auxiliary tumblers 64, and are oper ated by the second main key 32 merely to present their gatings in registry with the stump 10; it is only necessary for said keys 31 and 32 to respectively operate such of the group of tumblers 12 as are necessary for the respective functions aforesaid. It may be observed that until the auxiliary tu1nllers are shifted by the first main key, as just described, retraction of the slide bolt 1 is prevented by the stump 73 on the detent by the screw 69. Thereupon, said hub 18' being returned to its normal position, shown in Figs. III and IV, and said key 31being withdrawn, the lock is in condition to be operated to retract said bolt 1 by thesecond main or less'ees key 32 shown in-Fig. XII. Said main key 32 being then inserted in the keyway 24 of said hub 18 the latter-is turned, clockwise, from the position shown in Fig. V to the unlocked position shown in Fig. VI. It may be observed that when the guard lever I 1 is shifted from the normal unlocked position, shown in Fig; III, to the position shown in F ig. IV, by the operation of the guard key above described; the projection 76 on said guard lever 44- encounters the lug 77 on the slide bolt 1; so that when the slide'bolt is retracted" to unlocked position, as above described, said guard lever 44 is returned to the normal position, as shown in Fig. VI, thus releasing the detent lever 37 and guard tumblers 53 so that they are also returned to the normal position, as shown in Fig. VI. Said slide bolt may be returned to locked position by reversely ro, tating the key hub 18 by the key 32.
Although in the form'of my invention herein described the first main or lessees key 31 is so bitted as to shift all of'the tumblers 12 except the outer one; it is to be understood that they may be otherwisebit' ted. Moreover, both groups of tumblers, 12 and 53,- may be differently arranged in accordance with different bittings of keys otherwise similar to the keys 30, 31 and 32, and the permutability of the tumbler mechanism may be further increased by varying the key sweep edges of the respective tumblers. v i
It is to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth as it is obvious that various modifications may be .made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims;
I claim:
1. In a key lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of a rotary key hub with two separate keyways, respectively for a guard key and'for main keys; main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain andrelease said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position'thereof, including a guard lever and a detent for said main tumblers; releasing mechanism, including a releasing tumbler, and a lug on said slide bolt in cooperative relation with said guard lever, arranged to release said detent; a fence'pivotally coniected with said slidebolt; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism operatively connected with the main tumbler mechanism; whereby when said bolt is in locked position the guard tumbler, mechanism prevents the operation of the main tumbler mechanism, so
that the guard tumbler-mechanism must be operated by the guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated," and some of the latter must be operated by a main key to set the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt tobe shiftedto unlocked position,- by operation of the main tumblers, by another main key.
2. In a'key lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of a rotary key hub with two separate keyways, respectively for a guard key and for main keys; main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position. thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and releasesaid eam accordance with the position thereof, including a guard lever and a detent for said main tumblers; releasing mechanism, including a lug on said slide bolt in cooperative relation with said guard lever, arranged to release said detent;
' a fence carried by said slide bolt; and auxil- 1ary tumbler mechanlsm operatively conset the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to unlocked position, by operation of the main tumblers, by another main key. i
In a key lock, the combination'with a slide bolt; of a rotary key hub; main tum bler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position, thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof, including a guardlever anda detentfor said main tumblers; releasingmechanism, carried by said. slide bolt in cooperative relation with said guard lever, arranged to release said detent; afence carried by'said slide bolt; and
auxiliary tumbler mechanismoperatively connected with the main tumbler mechanism; whereby, when said bolt is in locked position the guard tumbler mechanism prevents the operation of the mam tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operatedby the guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated, and some of the latter must be operated by a main key to set the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to tion thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged todetain and release said bolt in accordance With position thereof; releasing mechanism, carried by said slidebolt, arranged ,to release said guard mechanism; a fence carried by said slide bolt; anauxiliary tumbler mechanism operatively connected with the main tumblermechanism; whereby, when said bolt is. in locked position the guard tumbler mechanism prevents the operation, of the main tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operated by the guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated, and some of thelatter must be operated by a main key to setthe auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to unlocked position, by

In a key lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and releasesaid bolt in accordance withthe position thereof; an element pivotally connected With said slide bolt; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism carried by said element and operatively connected with the main tumbler mechanism; whereby, when said boltis in-locked position the guardtumbler mechanism prevents the operation of the main tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operated'by the guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated, and some of the latter must be operatedbya main key to set the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to unlocked position, by operation of themain tumblers, by another main key. 6. In a key lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in ac cordance with the position thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the posifl tionthereof; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism operatively connected with the main tumbler mechanism; I whereby, when said boltis 1n locked positlon the guard tumbler umechanism prevents the operation of the main tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operated by the I guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated, and some of the latter must .be
operated by a main key to set the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to unlocked position, by operation of the main tumblers, byanother main key. In a lock, the combination with a slide Gopies 0f thisypatcnt may be obtained for bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance withthe position thereof; an element pivotally connected with said slide bolt, and auxiliary tumbler mechanism, carried by said element and arranged to be operated by the main tumbler mechanism.
8. In a lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism arranged to be operated by the main tumbler mechanism.
9. In a lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; a fence pivotally connected with said slide bolt; an auxiliary tumbler carried by said fence; and means operatively connecting said main tumbler mechanism with said auxiliary tumbler mechanism, whereby the latter is controlled by a key.
10. In a lock, the combination with a slide bolt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain'and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; guard tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; and auxiliary tumbler mechanism pivotally connected with said slide bolt and operativcly connected with the main tumbler mechanism whereby, when said bolt is in locked position the guard tumbler mechanism prevents the operation of the main tumbler mechanism, so that the guard tumbler mechanism must be operated by the guard key, to permit the main tumblers to be operated, and some of the latter must be operated by a main key to set the auxiliary tumblers to permit the bolt to be shifted to unlocked position, by operation of the main tumblers, by another main key.
11. In a lock, the combination with a slide belt; of main tumbler mechanism arranged to detain and release said bolt in accordance with the position thereof; an auxiliary tumbler mechanism pivotally connected with said bolt and arranged to be operated by the main tumbler, mechanism.
