Description
March 19, 1940. H..'.MACHINIST MORTISE CYLINDER nocx Original Filed July 26, 1935 INVENTOR /'/F7R 0 LD Mn cH/N/s 7-.
ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 19; 1940 I j I I 2,194,244 I MORTISE CYLINDER LocK '1 Harold Machinist, Sunnyside, N. Y., assignor to Dudley Lock Corporation,
. poration of Illinois Application July 26,
Chicago, 111., a cor- 1935,: Serial n 33-,251
newed May 18, 1937 I I 3 Claims. The present inventionrelates to locks and,
' more particularly, to pin tumbler cylinder locks.
locks are secured to doors or: other that the unauthorized Cylinder I closures in such manner or surreptitious removal of the cylinders, containingthe pin tumblers and thekey plugs, can
be accomplished with little difficulty, and once a cylinder is removedirom the closure it is a very simple matter to disassemble it and by measuring the tumblers and master pins, a master key for the system from which the cylinder has been taken can be easily provided.
In this manner unlawful or unauthorized entrance can tie-obtained to all of'the rooms of an apartment .house, hotel, or office building provided with I locks of a master system. Furthermore, it is possible for any tenant to remove the cylinder and then hire a locksmith to change the pin tumbler combination of his look, thereby to preby the master I I shownalock comprising a pin tumbler cylinder vent his look from being opened key. a
" The object of the present invention, therefore, is to prevent the unauthorized or surreptitious removal of cylinder locks" from closures pro- 'vided therewith. I
A further object of the invention is to prevent the removal, of cylinder locks from-their closures, except by a special key provided for that purpose.
' Another objector the invention is to provide a cylinder lock with means to prevent the unauthorizedremoval-of the look from the 010- sures, comprising interlocking means on the cylinder and on the closure, respectively, and keyoperated means effective under one condition to actuate the lock without releasingsaid interlocking means, and efiective under another condition to release said interlocking means to permit the removal of the lock from the closure,
ordinary key and the master'key, the lock or a number so that the I while effective to actuate of locks of a mastered system, respectively, are
"may beremoved sessing the super-master key and, therefore, preineffective to release the interlocking means, thus necessitating the use of a super-master key which is efiectiveto actuate the lock'and also to release the interlocking means so the cylinder from the closure by one possumablyauthorize'd to remove said look from the closure.
' The above objects of theinvention and other objects ancillary thereto will best be understood from the following descriptionconsidered with referenceto the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present specifications.
' from the closure.
case is provided with a in the key plug and the pin tumblers positioned thereby so that the key can actuate the lock and also release the interlocking means;
Fig. .3 is a sectional view. on the line 3--3 of Fig; 2;
Fig. i is a view partly in section of the key plug and associated parts of the present construction, showing the ordinary key effective to actuatethe look, but ineffective to release the interlocking means} 15 Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of an interlocking member; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary top plan view of the key plugarid associated parts. II I Referring to the drawing in detail, there is iii threaded into an opening 12 provided in the 'usual lock case M, mounted within a door or other closure it. The cylinder I Wis provided with the usual rotatable'key plug I8, pin tum- .bl'ers 2t, and the usuallock orlatch bolt actuit with the lock case it to prevent rotation of the cylinder case Iii with respect to the lock case it and thereby to prevent ,the cylinder from being unscrewed from the lock case and removed For this purpose the lock slot or recess 25 into which the interlocking member, here shown as a dogthmay be projected. The dog 28is slidable within a groove it extending transversely in said cylinder and is provided with a rack 32 adapted to mesh with a gear-tooth section 34 provided on an annular gear member 36. Said gear member surrounds the key plug 18 and is mounted for rotationwithin a peripheral groove fid provided in the. cylinder iii. The gear sleeve 36- is provided with a forwardly extending projection 48 adapted to be'engaged by a rearwardly extending projection 42 on a sleeve M which surrounds the key plug l8 and which is mounted for rotation within the peripheral groove 38 in the cylinder Ii].
Said-sleeve M- is provided with openings for additional pin tumblers 46 which, as illustrated 5 in Fig. 4, are normally so positioned that the breaks therein are at the outer surface of said key plug so that said key plug is normally free to rotate independently of the sleeve 44 and the gear member 36 when an ordinary key or even when an ordinary master key is used for actuating the look. When, however, a special or supermaster key is inserted within the key plug, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the pin tumblers 46 are raised by the key and interlock the sleeve 44 with the key plug l8. When said sleeve 44 is thus interlocked with the key plug l8, rotation of the latter also effects rotation of the sleeve 44 and as the result of the engagement of the projection 42 with the projection 40 on the gear member 36, the latter is caused to rotate and thereby move the dog 28 into and out of the recess 26 depending upon the direction of rotation thus interlocking the cylinder case i0 with the closure 16 or releasing said interlock, respectively. In practice, when the locks constructed in accordance with the present invention are installed in the doors or other closures, the cylinders I0 are screwed into the openings i2 and, by use of the super-master key 48, the end tumblers 46 are caused to interlock the sleeve 44 with the key plug 18, so that rotation of the key plug by the super-master key 48, in a clockwise direction, is efiective to project the interlocking member or dog 28 into the slot or recess 26. When said key 48 is removed from the key plug I8, and an ordinary key 50 is inserted, the breaks in the pin tumblers 46 are then automatically positioned at the outer surface of the key plug and, in that case, the key plug I8, when rotated within the cylinder, is ineffective to rotate the sleeve 46 either clockwise or counter-clockwise, and is therefore ineffective to retract the locking member 28 from the slot 26. When the dog is projected into the slot 26 in the case M, the cylinder H] cannot be rotated with respect to said lock case, and it is therefore impossible to unscrew said cylinder from the closure. Also, since the lock case I4 is threadedly engaged by the cylinder, it is impossible to remove the lock case from the closure in which it is mounted. It will be understood that the lock is so designed that the ordinary key and the ordinary master key, such as the key 50, of a master lock system are eiiective to actuate the look, but are ineifective to actuate the interlocking member or dog 28, either to project or retract the latter, and that said interlocking member can be actuated only by the use of a super-master key, such as the key 58, which will be under the control of one authorized to remove or install such locks.
As illustrated in Fig. 6, the projection 42 of the sleeve 44 is positioned so that it is necessary to rotate said sleeve substantially one complete revolution before said projection engages the projection 48 on the gear member 36, and thereby becomes effective to move said gear memberto project the dog into the recess. When the dog is thus projected and the super-master key is withdrawn from the key plug, the tumbler pins are forced down by the driver pins and interlock the key plug 18, the sleeve 44, and the cylinder, thereby to prevent forcing of the dog out of the recess in the closure. When the ordinary key or ordinary master key is used to actuate the lock, the tumbler pins 46 as well as the tumbler pins 2!! are raised so that their breaks OCCLU. at
the outer surface of the key plug 18 and thus perinit rotation of the key plug to actuate the lock without, however, actuating the sleeve 44 which remains locked to the cylinder I 6 by the driver pins. In order to withdraw the dog from its recess when the key plug is actuated by the supermaster key, the sleeve 44 clutched to said key plug is rotated substantially one complete revolution in the opposite direction before the projection 42 engages the projection 40 on the gear member 36 and thereby becomes effective to actuate said gear member to withdraw the dog from the closure recess 26, and when the super-master key is withdrawn, the lock is in normal position to be removed from the closure by merely unscrewing the cylinder.
Thus it is seen that the construction herein shown and described is well adapted to accomplish the several objects of the present invention. It will be understood, however, that the present construction may be varied and that the invention may be embodied otherwise than as here shown., Therefore, I do. not Wish to be limited to the precise constructions herein disclosedexcept as may be required by the appended claims and the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure and claim by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a pin-tumbler look, a pin-tumbler cylinder, a key plug rotatable in said cylinder, a dog mounted in said cylinder for movement transversely thereof, said dog having a rack, a rotatable gear sleeve in mesh with said rack, a rotat able pin tumbler sleeve adapted to engage said gear sleeve normally inoperative by said key plug but effective under a predetermined condition to be rotated thereby for engaging said gear sleeve in order to rotate thelatter and thereby move said dog.
2. In a pin-tumbler lock, a cylinder, a key plug rotatable in said cylinder, a sleeve surrounding said key plug and also rotatable in said cylinder and provided with a projection, a gear member surrounding said plug rotatable within said cylinder and provided with a projection adapted to be engaged by said sleeve projection, said plug be ing normally rotatable independently of said sleeve and gear, means operative to clutch said sleeve to said plug to rotate said sleeve when the plug is rotated, thereby to engage said sleeve projection with said gear projection and rotate said rack, and a dog mounted on said cylinder for movement transversely thereof provided with a rack in mesh with said gear whereby actuation of said sleeve is effective to move said dog with respect to said cylinder,
3. In a pin-tumbler look, a pin-tumbler cylinder, a key plug rotatable in said cylinder, a dog mounted in said cylinder for movement transversely thereof, said dog having a rack, a rotatable gear sleeve in mesh with said rack, a rotatable pin tumbler sleeve adapted to engage said gear-sleeve normally inoperative by said key plug but effective under a predetermined condition to be rotated thereby for engaging said gear sleeve in order to rotate the latter and thereby move said dog, said pin-tumbler sleeve having a lost .motion connection with said gear member and effective, after actuation by said key plug to rotate the gear member in one direction to move the dog, to remain in position to prevent move- -ment of the gear member in the opposite direc-
