NTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY WM. HICKEY, OF ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HINGE.
Application led May 27, 1919.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY WV. Hicitnir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abington, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to hinges of the type shown by the Upton and Gray Patent No. 699,727, dated May 13, 1902, and it has for its obj ect to provide improvements in a hinge of this type whereby its usefulness and general desirability are increased.
The invention is embodied in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a hinge embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end View, parts being broken 0H.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fi Fig. 4 is a section on line ele-4 of Fi Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the tongue washer. v
Fig. 7 is ay perspective view of the pintle.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a spring as a part of the adjustable abutment hereinafter referred to.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
The iiXed member of the hinge includes a plate or base 12, adapted to be attached to a door janib, and a plurality of spaced apart pintle sockets 13, 14 and 15, adapted to receive a pintle 17. The upper socket 13 is internally polygonal and preferably square, as
shown by Fig. t, and the pintle 17 has a correspondingly shaped upper portion 17l titting the socket 13, and prevented thereby from turning. The main portion of the pintle is cylindrical, and is formed to pass through the intermediateJ fixed socket 14 and the lower iXed socket 15, and through the sockets of the swinging hinge member composed of a suitable base, preferably formed by straps 20 attachable to a door, and upper and lower pintle socket-s 21 and 22, formed to receive and turn on the cylindrical portion of the pintle.
The upper movable socket 21 is interposed between the upper iixed socket 13 and the intermediate iiXed socket 14, and the lower movable socket 22 is below the inter- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

mediate socket and spaced from the lower fixed socket 15.
The pintle is provided between the movable socket 22 and the lower-fixed socket 15 with a vertically adjustable abutment, which is preferably formed by an upper nut 211 and a lower nut 25, both engaged with a. screw thread on the lower portion of the pintle, and a tongue washer 26 interposed between said nuts, the tongue 27 of said washer enga-ging a longitudinal slot 28 in the pintle. rl`he abutment aids in supporting the movable hinge member and the door to which said member is attached. rThe adjustability ofthe abutment enables its height to be varied to compensate for wear of the liieeting surfaces of the sockets 14: and 21, and the meeting surfaces of the socket 22 and nut 24.
Owing to the fact that the pintle is prevented from turning as described, it forms an immovable support for the nuts 21 and 25, so that the nuts which are locked on the pintle by their bearing on the non-rotatable tongue washer, constitute an abutment which is free from liability to be accidentally displaced from any position to which it may be adjusted. The upper nut 2a is locked in any adjusted position by the lower nut 2.5 through the interposed washer, the lower nut acting as a jam or lock nut. As shown by Fig. 8, the abutment may be adapted to bear yieldingly against the lower movable socket 22 by a spring 80 interposed between said socket and a cup washer 31 bearing on the nut 24.
The upper socket 13 of the tlXed hinge member located above the upper socket 21 of the swinging hinge member contines the upper end` of the pintle member in close proximity to the door, and thus prevents the upper movable socket 21 from sagging outwardly, so that the said socket and the door are lirmly held in the proper relation to the j amb.
I claim:
1. A hinge comprising a fixed member including a base adapted for attachment to a door casing, and a plurality of fixed spaced apart pintle sockets, one at the upper end, another at the lower end, and the third between the ends of said base, the upper socket being internally polygonal, a pintle having a polygonal upper portion fitting the upperl socket and prevented from turning by the latter, and a cylindrical portion, passing tion, between the lower and the intermediate iXed socket and vertically adjustable on the pintle, said adjustable abutment being formed by an upper nut and a lower nut, both engaged with a threaded portion of the pintle, and a tongue washer interposed between said nuts and engaged with a longitudinal groove in the pintle and a swinging member including a base, attachable to a door, and upper and lower movable pintle sockets on said base` the upper movable socket being interposed between the'upper i5 and intermediate fixed sockets, and the lower niovfabfle socket being interposed between the intermediate'fxecl socket and the adjustq able abutment, the, upper nut being looked in any adjusted position .by the lower nutg2 the upper nut and thel lower movable socket. 25
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. I
TIMOTHY WM. HICKEY.
