MECHANICAL TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Apr. 13, 1920.,
Application filed April 10, 1918. Serial No. 227,633.
be set in motion by a simple manual operation carried out by a reciprocating rubbing stroke along one side of the part'which supports said moving figure.
For this purpose the invention comprises a supporting rod to which a movable fig ure is attached, and the rod is notched along one of its longitudinal edges, to the end that a pencil or the like reciprocating along this notched edge will impart such vibratory movement to the rod as to actuatethe movable figure in the desired manner.
It is a further object to provide a unique and compact structure adapted to be housed in a neat, handy box, and the whole comprises parts of simple construction and having nothing that is likely to get out of order.
With these objects in view the invention will now be described with reference-to the accompanying drawing illustrating one form of construction which has been 'devised for embodying the same, after which the novel features sought to be protected by patent will be defined in the appended claim.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy construction embodying the present improvements, the parts being disconnected and housed in a box of a form constituting a suitable receptacle for said parts;
Fig. 2 is perspective view of the toy arranged to include a dancing figure and showing the manner of manipulating the same, the broken lines representing one of the positions said figure assumes in operation; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the toy arranged to include a whirling element in lieu of the dancing figure.
Referring to the drawing .in detail, the
toy is illustrated as comprising a rod or bar 4 of any convenient length and preferably of angular cross-section having one of its longitudinal edges provided with a series of notches 6. Into one end of the rod 4 is inserted a pin 8, which, in the preferred form of the invention, pivotally carries a dancing figure 10, having jointed arms and legs asillustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, said figure 10 bemg attached and supported by passing the pin 8 through a hole 12 in the body portion of said figure 10.
The toy as thus constructed is operated by holding the rod or bar a in one of the hands of the operator, while with his other hand he manipulates a pencil 1a or the like alon the row of notches 6, giving said pencil a quick reciprocating stroke. During this operation the figure 10 is supported so that its feet will be within reach of a suitable resounding surface, such as the top surface of a box 16. The described manipstrokes of the pencil and with somewhat greater pressure thereon, the movements of the dancing figure may be made more or less exaggerated, as illustrated by the broken lines in Fig. 2, thus resulting in very comical or ludicrous antics on the part of said dancing figure.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated a modification in which the dancing figure is replaced by what may be termed a Whirligig element 18 comprising a short thin fiat strip with a central perforation 20 adapted toreceive the pin 8, whereby said strip may be pivotally attached to the end of the rod or bar 4. The operation of this modification is similar to that already described, by manipulating the pencil 14 along the notches 6 of the bar or rod 4 for the purpose of causing rotation of said whirling element 18,
the vibratory movement of the rod as to I cause its free end to exert a whirling action on the strip or element 18. It is found that the direction of rotation of said ele- 'ment is reversed by shifting the pressure of the thumb or finger from one side of the row of notches to the other side thereof, 1 while the pencil is being reciprocated along said notches, and also that said rotary movement is entirely stopped by simply disengaging both the thumb and finger from the rod.
The parts of the device are such that they may be conveniently and compactly housed within the box 16. This box is simply formed of a pair of hinged leaves one of which is provided with a shallow recess 24 for accommodating the thin flat strip 18, while both leaves of the box are provided with mating recesses 26 and 28 for accommodating the bulkier parts of the toy,
namely, the rod 4 and dancing figure 10 respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will thus be apparent that a simple, neat, compact and inexpensive construction has been devised for carrying out the ,desired objects of the inventiom, and while I 1,sse,7ee
have illustrated and described practical and convenient forms of embodiment of the improvements, I desire to reserve the right to make such formal chan es or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the ap ended claim. I
aving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A mechanical toyconstruction comprising a bar provided with a longitudinal series of notches along one side thereof, a jointed dancing figurepivotally connected to one end of the bar; a member havin a resounding surface associated with the eet of said'figure, and an instrument adapted to be reciprocated in engagement with said 40 notches for actuating said figure to simulate dancing movements and cause the feet of said figure to execute a clog dance on said surface.
