Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAPHAEL M. sELnIs, 0E NEW YORK, n.
IMPROVEMENT IN MuFFs.
` /f/ Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,674, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, RAPHAEL M. SELDIs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Muifs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2 is aperspec tive view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of projecting flanges on the ends of the linings of a muf in such a manner that by said flanges a firm and durable connection between the lining and the outside shell of the muff can be effected; and, furthermore, the quantity of silk or other material required for the muff can bereduced, and the labor of attaching said lining is materially simplified; further, in combining with theflanged lining covering-strips which are folded over and secured at their edges to the edges of tthe flanges and form tubular guides for cords in `such a manner that by pulling said cords the covering-strips close down over ...the flanges,l concealing the same and imparting to' the ends of the muff a iinishedv appearance; also, in combining with the llanged lining strips of fur overlapping the inner edges of the flan ges and serving to Warm the wrists of the person wearing the mufl". Y .5
In the drawing, the letter A designates the lining of my muff, which ismade of cotton flannel or any other suitable material, in the form of a tube of somewhat smaller diameter than that of the outside shell B so that when the lining is inserted in said shell an annular space, C, Fig. l, is left for the reception ofa suitable stuffing. The lining A is provided at its ends with flanges a, which are made 'of oil-cloth, leather, or any other suitable material, and which, when the lining is inserted into the shell B, close the ends of the annular space C. The outer edges of thejianges a can be readily and firmly sewed to the outside shell, and the seams are concealed by covering-strips b, which are doubled up and sewed at their edges to the' flanges a, so that when said strips are turned in they cover the aseams between the iiangesandthe shell B.
The strips b, on being doubled up, form tubes caused to turn down over the flanges, so astoY conceal the same and to give to the ends of the mu the proper nish. art'to make and use the same, referencebeing 'had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- By these means two narrow strips of silk'for vthe covering-strips are all that is required to give tothe mud the required finish, and a lining is obtained which can be sewed to the shell of the muff by unpracticed hands, and which is much more durable and less costly than an ordinary silk lining.
If my lining is worn it can be replaced for one-third of what it costs to replace an ordinary silk lining; and, furthermore, the' operation of attaching such silk lining requires great practice, since the stitches have to be carefully concealed. In my lining the seams connecting it withthe shell can be made in any manner, since they are concealed by the covering-strips b;
With the flanged lining I have also combined strips d, of fur, which are doubled up,
as showninliig. l, and attached to the inner edges of the flanges a. The object of these strips of fur is to warm the wrists of the person wearing the muli". .The seams between said strips and the lining are concealed by the protecting-strips b.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The mode herein described of connecting the lining with the outer shell of the'muff and inclosing the annular space C, by rst securing the flanges a a to the lining A-and then inserting the same within the outer shell of the muff, and connecting the outer edges of the flanges with the shell B, as set forth.
2. As an improvement in stock for the manufacture of muffs, the lining A, provided with the flanges a for closing the annular space between the lining and shell of the muil',
in the manner and for the purpose specified. JV
3. The protecting-strips b, secured to the muff as shown, and provided with adjustingcords, as set forth.
This specification signed by me this 15th day of October, 1872.
