To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MALACZYNSKI, a citizen of Poland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Padlock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks and particularly to an improved combination padlock and has for an object to provide a construction which is extremely simple, but which requires a very'accurate adjustment of the parts to produce an unlocking operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination padlock wherein means are provided which require two separate adjustments to completely lock or unlock the device.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals 1 indicates what may be termed a casing connected with a cross bar 2 by tubular member 3 which is provided with shoulders at each end as shown in Fig. 3 and is held in place by the respective pins 4 and 5 secured to the member 3 by rivets or otherwise as may be desired. Pin 4 has a disk 6 rigidly secured thereto provided with letters, numbers or other indications with suitable graduations co-actin with one or more marks 7 on bar 2. Fin 5 extends through a cam disk 8 and is rigidly secured thereto, the extreme end, however, being journaled in the casing 1 as shown at the bottom of Fig. 3. This cam as shown in Fig. 10 is round and is provided with raised portions 9 and 10 on each face and depressions 11 and 12 on each face whereby the arms 13 and 14 and also the arms 15 and 16 which overlap the disk may be separated or allowed to approach according to the position of the cam. .These arms are pivotally connected together in pairs at 17 and 18 and merge into pairs of locking bars 19 and locking bars 20. Each of the locking bars is provided with a number of notches 21 having a lug or projection 22 adjacent each notch so as to overlap the respective flanges 23 of the looking rings or keepers 24 and 25. These rings, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, are provided with inwardly extending flanges 23, each flange having a pair of oppositely positioned notches 26 and an extra deep notch 27. The ring 24 has a flange adjacent one face while the flange 23 of ring 25 is set in a short distance so as to accommodate the first lug 28 of the shackle 29. A spring 30 is positioned between each pair of bars 19 so as to give the same a continuous tendency to open or spread to the position shown in Fig. 7 whereby they will interlock with the flanges 23 and move away from the various lugs 28 on the shackle extension 29. The lugs 28 are something of the nature of buttress threads, so as to provide shoulders designed to interlock not only with the flanges 23 but with the hook-shaped members 31 on the respective locking bars 19. When the locking bars are in their locked position they appear as shown in Fig. 3, and
when 111 their unlocked position as shown in Fig. 7. When the various locking rings or keepers 24 or 25 are in their unlocked position they assume the position shown in Fig. 6 with all of the notches 27 in line as well as notches 26. If the notches 26 were not provided the bars 19 could not be moved to their open position as shown in Fig. 7. By reason of this construction and arrangement the various locking rings 24: and 25 must be alined on both legs of the shackle 29 and then the disk 6 turned until the cam disk 8 is in the position shown in Fig. 7 whereupon the springs 30 will cause the bars 19 to move over into the notches 26. This will free the shackle extension 29 from engagement with any of the locking members and consequently-the shackle may be removed by a direct pull thereon. To strengthen and stiflen the parts and also to cause a proper operation of the various parts the casing 1 is provided with a pair of tubular upstanding members 32 as indicated in Figs. 3, 1 and 6, said tubular upstanding members being provided with slots 33, 34: and 35 for accommodating the locking bars 19 and the shackle extension 29' with their lugs 28.
It will be noted that the indications on the disk 6 in respect to the line 7 on bar 2 cannot be changed to vary the combination unless the lock is taken to pieces and the cam disk 8 shifted. However, the combination of the locking rings or keepers 2 1 may be varied easily. As shown in Fig. 1 it will be seen that the locking ring 25 is provided with a number of letters arranged between vertical lines 36, each letter having an indication line 37 therebetween. This same arrangement is provided 011 the locking rings 24, but with a different arrangement of letters. When the various lines 37 of the proper letters are brought into alinement and also into alinement with the indicating line 38 on casing 1 the notches 27 are all in line so that the disk 6 may be turned and the shackle 29 removed. If it is desired to change the combination of these locking rings it will be necessary to remove the shackle 29, disk 6 and bar 2 and then rearrange the rings 24 as desired after which the bar 2 and disk 6 must be replaced. It will be noted that both legs of the shackle 29 are formed with locking means, the same being identical, but the rings 24 and 25 are duplicated on both sides, but preferably a different set of letters are used on the respective sides so that there will really be three combinations, one for each side and one for the disk 6.
What I claim is:
1. A combination padlock comprising a casing, a shackle having a pair of locking extensions projecting into part of the easing, a plurality of locking rings for locking said extensions, each of said rings being rotatable so as to be moved into and out of adjustment for locking and unlocking the extension, a pair of auxiliary locking bars for each of said extensions, and manually operated means for shifting said bars when the locking rings are alined in an unlocked position.
2. A combination lock in the form of a padlock comprising a casing, a U-shaped shackle having a pair of locking extensions provided with shouldered members, a plu rality of rings surrounding each of said extensions formed with notches for accommodating the extensions so that the shackle may be applied and removed when the rings are positioned with the notches in alinement, each of said rings being formed with a flange for overlapping said notches when the notches are out of alinement, and locking bars operated independently of the rings adapted to engage said locking extensions.
3. A combination lock of the padlock type comprising a casing having a pair of tubular upstanding members, each upstanding member being formed with three slots, a U- shaped shackle having locking extensions fitting loosely in said upstanding members, said locking extensions having shouldered projections extending through one of said slots in each of the upstanding members, a plurality of locking rings or keepers sur rounding each of said upstanding members, each of said rings beingformed with an internal flange having a notch for accommodating the projections from said locking extensions when the notches "are in alinement, said internal flanges overlapping said proj ections when the notch in any of the locking rings is out of alinement, a locking bar arranged in each of two of said slots, and means for causing said bars to interlock with said locking extensions.
4. A combination lock in the nature of a padlock comprising a casing having a pair of spaced tubular members, each of said tubular members being formed with a pair of opposite slots and a third slot arranged between the two first mentioned slots, a shackle having locking extensions fitting into said tubular members, each of said locking extensions being provided with, a pair of shouldered portions extending toward the first mentioned slots and a third shouldered portion extending toward the second mentioned slot, locking rings positioned to interlock with the last mentioned shouldered portion, a pair of locking bars having projections adapted to interlock with the first mentioned projections on the locking extensions on the shackle, a cam for moving said locking bars into and out of engagement, and an operating memberv connected with said cam positioned exteriorly of the casing.
