This invention relates to padlocks, and more especially to a padlock so constructed thatv that part of the locking mechanism which comprises the key barrel and tumblersv may be removed from the case ofthe lock, as
a unit, and a new unit inserted therefor, so as such a case, it has often been necessary to completely discard the original lock and buy`r anew one. This is, ofcourse, a relatively expensive matter and in the presentconstruction I have Aprovided a padlock inV which a key change may be eected in a much more economical manner. w
.In order to edect thisend, I have provided a padlock, from vthe case of which the key receiving member and thetumblers maybe readily removed from the case Vwhen the shackle is in unlocked position, but fits removal is rendered* impossible when the shackle is in operative lock position.
One object of my invention is to provide a padlock wherein the locking mechanism may be placed in and removed from kthe case unit. f y. I A vfurther objectV of my invention is to provide a detachable unit for padlocks, which* unit'is designed to'compriseA the key-barrel, ami tumblers, andmeans for detachably se-V curing said unit within the case of the pad, lock,A which means will be inaccessible to permit removal of the lock when the shackle isl in f locked position. v p
yAnother object of my invention isthe provision of a padlock lof the Character described,
which may be economically manufactured' without sacrificing any of thel advantages of convenience and security whichl such a lock should possess."

'In the upper part of this opening there is inserted within Vthe shell, a housing 11. This housing is formed inv cross section to accurately -t theopening through the casing, and comprises a topplate 12, which is solid except for the openings 13' and 14, designedto receive the legs ofthe shackle 15. This housing is also provided'with a lower plate` 16, andbetween theupper and lower plates 'is provided with a pocket or cavity within which lockingbolts 17 and 18 are' `scribed hereinafter.' The body-'porti'ons of these bolts slide :uponrpins'21 and 22, so that they maybe held in proper position against the upper plate 12. In orderthat they may be normally urged to locked position, springs 23 and 24 are arranged to act against the rear ends ofthe' bolts'and force themv outwardly.

The longer legA of the shackle is provided with a lshoulder 27 which willfbev engaged, by the bolt head 19, to prevent the complete removal of the shackle from the lock.
InMFig. 6 is shown 'the unit" 28, containing the locking mechanism which may be remov able and insertable bodily into the padlocky case. This is, of course, inserted from the' lower end and is provided with. a lower plate or base 29 which iits snugly'into theopening through the caseandg againsta narrow shoulder 30 so that the platev 29 is substantially' iiushwith thelower edge ofthe casinglO. This unit comprisesa cylindrical casing 31, containing' the key plug or barrel 32,7andfhaving a pinl tumbler extension 33,which contains pin tumblers of the usual type in; the present embodiment. Upon the upper.Y end of the key barrel are provided pins 34 and35,
designed to engage withy the lugs 20 tojretract the bolts 17. and 18 whenithe key barrel is turned.

to enter a'slot 39 in-the side ofthe lock case immediately below the shorter legof the; shackle. It willbe apparent froml an inspection of Fig.` 5 thatwhen this screw is rotated so that thestfraight or cut away edge is tof ward the adjacent side of the lock case,the screw head'will not be engaged in the slot 39, and the l unit containing the locking mechanism may then be removed from the case.

The operation of my improved structure lis as follows. It will, of coursebe obvious that when-the parts are inV therposition showninA Fig. 4,'and the-propergkey isi'nsertedyinthe key barrel32,-thisbarrel-may be rotated and during such rotation the pins 34-and;35-wil1 I contact with the lugs v2O upon the lock bolts* 17 and 18, and withdraw' these bolts from the recesses 25 and 26 in the shackle. The shackle will then be forced upwardly by the spring 40 Y until the shorter end clears the upper plate 12 of the housing 11, and the shackle may then be rotated in the usualiway.l so that the lock may be disengaged from a hasp or the like with which it may be used. It is, of course,lbcated in the lock by@y meansof the snugfit of the extension 36in the opening of thelowerplatel ofthe housv ingl 11but the extension-is freely withdrawable from this opening when permitted. as straight downward movement, as shown in Fig. 4, as isthe case when the screw headis disengaged from the recess/39. The engagement oftheextension 36-ingthe opening of the plate 16, serves,however,tofpreventany tiltingJ-offthe unit. 28, which might allow this unit to;be removed whetherror vnot the screw headis disengaged from' the slot.
When, the w.screw has been. turned to the proper *position andf-the'junit 28 removedI from the lock, a similar unit requiring a diHerent key-may then be placedinthe -lock case and the screw upon it' turned to engage the slot. It will; be-seen,.therefore, that the removalof thetumbler unit andthe replacing of' an othenlsimilar'lunit, is donein ani extremely simple,`A and expeditious manner;

A padlock having a casing, vand a shackle received in openings in the casing, locking mechanism removably mounted in the casing, means for securing said mecha-l nism in place, sai-d means being accessible for release of the locking mechanism through one of the shackle openings, and means vindependent of said removable locking mechanism for securing the shackle to the casing securing said' unit in place within the casing, said means being releasable through one of the shackle receiving openings, and means independent Vof said insertable mechanism for securinor the shackle to the casing when the former is in open position,
5. In a padlock, a casing, a shackle received in openings in the casing, bolt mechanism to secure said shackle in place, bolt operating means comprising a key barrel, and controlling tumblers therefor insertable as a unit within the casing, and means disposed below one end of the shackle for releasably holding said bolt operating means in place, sai-d bolt mechanism engaging the shackle when the latter is unlocked to secure it to the casing. a
