invention relates to combination padlooks and has for the object, the provision of a device of the above stated character which will be burglar-proof, easy to lock and unlock when having knowledge of the proper combina' tion, and is so constructed that the combination may be easily and quickly changed without substitution of new parts and also permits a large number of different combinations to be had.
With this and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of con struction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The last named leg portion of the shackle is provided with a reduced portion 8 having a bevelled wall 9 at one end and an abrupt or rightangle'wall 10 at theopposite end. A spring pressed pin 11 is carried by the body 1 and fits withinlthe recess 8 and is adapted to allow the inward movement of the shackle relative to the body but which will limit the outward movement of the shackle when engaged with the shoulder ll to'prcvent complete separation of the shackle from the body. The right angle or abrupt shoulder 10 is located adjacent the end of the respective leg portion of the shackle and has a slo 12 extending therethrough for the purpose of receiving the spring pressed .pin 11, and thereby allowing the passage of the said end of the shackle by the plunger 11 when desiringto disconnect the shackle entirely from the body ll. It is to be understood'that the shackle rnustbe turned into a proper position to bring the slot 12 in alignment with the spring pressed keyeither when connecting or disconnecting the shackle entirely from the body 1.

Figure 2 shows the key or locking element positioned to secure the shackle to the body against relative movement thereto.
Bearing portions 25 are formed on the opposing faces of the end members 13 of the body and engage the connecting element 15 as shown in Figure 2. Annular spacing elements 26 are mounted on the connecting element 15 and which are provided with oppositely disposed lugs 27 fitting within the grooves 18 of the connecting element to prevent said spacing elements from having rotation relative to the connecting element. The spacing elements 26 are provided with notches 28 aligningwith the key groove 19 for the purpose of permitting the key to have sliding movement endwise relative to the connecting-element. Annular locking elements 29 are mounted on the connecting element 15 between the spacing elements 26 and are cut or severed The ends 30 being relatively spaced provide passages which when aligned with the key groove 19 permit the key to have endwise movement relative to the connecting element 15.
A series of annular operating elements 31 are rotatably mounted on the spacing elements 26 between the end members 13 of the body with the locking elements 29 confined therein'and having frictional contact therewith. The frictional contact of the locking elements 29 with the operating elements 31 is sufficient to cause. the locking elements to rotate on the connecting element 15 by the rotation of the operating elements and the latter are provided with a series of characters as shown in Figure 1 adapted to cooperate with a series of characters on the end members 13. The operating elements 31 are provided with finger pieces 32 whereby a person can conveniently rotate the various operating elements relative to each otherfor aligning certain characters of a combination and with the characters on the end members of the body.
A person familiarwith the proper combination of the lockrotates the various operating elements 31 until the characters of the combination align which positions the passages of the locking elements in alignment with the key groove 19 of the connecting element 15 and on tilting the locking endwise, the key gravitates into a position to become disengaged from the notches 5 and 7 of the shackle, thus allowing the shackle to be moved outwardly relative tothe body and freeing one end of the shackle that the same may be removed and replaced in a keeper. To lock the device, the plunger 24 is moved inwardly positioning the key as shown in Figure 2 and by v turning several of the operating, elements 31, the
passages of the locking elements 29 will be moved out of registration with the groove 19 and will lie between the teeth 20 of the key preventing endwise movement of the key.

When it is desired to change the combination, it is only necessary to move the operating ele ments 31 relative to the operating elements 29 and this can be easily accomplished when the locking elements 29 are so positioned that their ends 30 abut the teeth 20 on the locking element or key 6.
An element 36 is provided for aiding a person in operating the combination of the lock at night time or when the characters on the lock cannot be easily read and is adapted to be positioned against the body of the lock with one edge in engagement with the shackle 3 while the opposite edge is shaped to cause the combination of the lock to be actuated properly when the finger pieces or pins 32 are brought into engagement therewith as shown in Figure 12. a While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A combination padlock comprising a body having sockets, a shackle of substantially U- shape receivable in said sockets with one leg of a greater length than the other leg and provided with a cut-out portion forming a bevelled face and an annular shoulder having a slot therein, a spring pressed plunger carried by the body and fitting in thecut-out portion to limit the outward movement of the shackle relative to the body and to permit the shackle to be dis connected from the body when the slot is aligned with the plunger, slidable means on the body to engage and disengage with the shackle, and combination means for securing the slidable means in engagement with the shackle.
2. A combination padlock comprising end members having sockets in opposing faces thereof, a connecting element received in the sockets and secured to the end members and having oppositely disposed lug grooves and a single key groove, said end members and element having alining sockets, a shackle received by the lastnamed sockets and having notches, a toothed key slidable in the key groove to be engaged and disengaged with the notches, spacing elements on said connecting element and having ofisets fitting in the lug grooves and each provided with a notch to receive the key, operating members mounted on the spacing elements for rotation relative thereto, locking elements having spaced ends to receive the key and journaled on the connecting element and frictionally engaging the operating members to be rotated thereby, one of the end members having a chamber to receive one end of the key, a lug on said end of the key and located in the chamber, a plunger slidable in the ANTONIO DIAZ.
