IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CHAIRS AND STEP-LADDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1333,59 1, dated December 3, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES B. RAWSON, of Worcester, Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Combined Chair and Step-Ladder, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the arrangement of steps upon the under side of a chair-seat so that it may be used as a part of a step-ladder, and to the arrangement of steps on the lower portion of a chair in such a manner that it may be used as part of a step-ladder.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the side elevation of a chair embodying my invention, exhibiting the seat in two positions-A showing its position when used for the purposes of a chair, and B its position when used for the purposes of a step-ladder.

I) is a step, firmly attached to the chair-frame, resting throughout its entire length upon the lower front round and at each end upon the lower side rounds.

beneath the seat, near the center of the chair, and fixed to the chair-rails upon each side. d cl are steps attached to the under side of the seat, and may be supported by the brackets d d, or in any other manner desired. e is a link pivoted at one end to the chair-rail and at the other end to the rear corner of the chair-seat. The dotted lines 0 show the position of the-link when the seat is raised, and the rear edge thrown forward to give it the proper inclination to be used as a step-ladder. The link 0 should be of such length and pivoted to the chair-rail at such a point as to al= low the inclination of the seat desired, when in the position shown at B, with its lower edge resting upon the step c and its upper edge resting against the back of the chair.

A link being attached, in the manner just described, to each rear corner of the seat and to each of the rails of the chair, the whole forms a firm and durable hinged joint that allows the seat to be changed at will from one position to the other. position A, rests upon the rear upper round f, the step c and the pins 9 in the front corner, which fall into slots h upontthe inside upper extremity of the front chair-leg; or a lug or pin, in place of the pin g, may rest directly -upon the chair-rail or the upper end of the front chair-leg, or in any other manner that will furnish a firm support to the front edge of the chair-seat and not prevent the chair being used for the purposes of a step-ladder when the seat is placed in position B.

- I donot claim as my invention the combination of a chair and step-ladder, as this has beenaccomplished before in several forms.

What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The chair-seat having the steps at d on the under side and connected to the chairframe by links 6, as specified.

2. In combination with the above, I claim the chair-frame a a at having the steps b c, as and for the purpose specified.
