IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIRS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 165,745, dated July 20, 1875; application filed May 8, 1875.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE MOALEER, of YVorcester, in the county of IVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Folding RockingUhairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal central vertical section of my chair, and Fig. 2 is a "iew of the same folded.

Fig. 3 is a top view of my chair when folded.

This invention has relation to folding rocking-chairs; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the front and rear legs, pivoted to the rockers, extended, respect ively, to form the back and seat bars, and connected by suitable links to provide for the necessary play of the parts in folding the chair, as hereinafter fully shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the front legs, which are extended upward and rearward to form the side bars of the back B. The lowerends of these legs are pivoted to the forward ends of the rockers (J on the outside. D represents the rear legs, pivoted to the inside of the rockers, and extended upward and forward to form the supporting-bars of the seat-frame E. Suitable transverse bars are employed to secure the legs D as well as the legs A to each other. In this manner two frames, B and E, are formed, and constitute, with the rockers, the frame of the chair. F indicates a fulcrum-bar or round, attached to the legs A by cap-plates a, or otherwise secured in place.- G represents linkplates, which are pivoted at one end to the round F, and by a slotted connection at the other, as indicated at b, to the rear legs D. Above the pin a, which passes through the slot of the link-plate, each leg D is provided with a rest, (I, on the under side, for engagement with the round F, the same serving to secure the chair in position when set up for use. This rest may consist of an abutment on the bar, or a bracket-plate may be attached for this purpose, as shown in the drawings. The object of thisconnection is to allow for the play of the frames B and E, by each other, when the chair is folded or unfolded. Instead of attaching the link-plates to the round F, they may be connected directly to the front legs. Sometimes it is preferred to dispense I with these connecting-plates, and employ slots or grooves and pins, or other suitable devices to give the necessary play.

When the chair is to be folded the seatframe E is lifted slightly to detach the brackets from the round F. The seat-frame will then fall forward upon the round, which will also fall, with the baclrfranle to the rear, until stopped by contact with the rockers.

I do not desire to confine myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, as in many particulars it may be varied by those skilled in the art.

The chair may be provided with a rigid or flexible seat.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the rockers O, of the pivoted and extended legs A D, respectively forming parts of the back and seat frames, and alinkconnection, as described, to allow for the play in folding the chair, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the extended legs A B, of the fulcrum-bar F, the rests d, and the link-plates Gr, substantially as specified.
