To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT the above-named petitioner, being duly sworn, depose and say that I am a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Marshall and State of South Dakota, that I verily believe myself to be the original, first, and sole inventor of improvements in Silos, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to silos andparticularly to cylindrical wooden stave silos.

it has been found that considerable shrinkage takes place between the staves forming the usual cylindrical, wooden stave silos, causing leakage and often the collapsing of the wall due to loosening of the bands or hooks. It is the primary object of my invention to remedy this condition by providing an automatic means for taking up shrinkage as it occurs.

Another object of the invention is to utilizo to a maximum extent the elements forming the usual stave silo in order that the present device may be incorporated therein without effecting a change in the entire silo construction.

Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a silo having my device applied thereto.

Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing to advantage the metal retainer.

Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.

It is tobe understood that the present invention is to be applied to the usual form of stave silo indicated in the drawing by the letter A and having a foundation B. As shown each of the silo staves is provided with a groove on one edge and a tongue on the other forming the usual tongue and groove joint and are held together with a plurality of the usual sustaining bands or hoops indicated by G.

As is clearly illustrated in detail in Fig. 2 of the drawing my invention contemplates the use of a diametrically split stave having complementary opposed wedge sections BRASH,

1 and 2 one of which (indicated by 1) is movable with respect to the other, a tongue and groove joint being effected between the two and also between the adjacent staves 3 and 4. Attention is called to the fact that any one of the conventional staves forming the silo may be split in the mannerindicated and utilized for the purposes of the present invention;

Mounted adjacent the broad end of the movable stave 1 is a pulley 5 over which is trained the rope or chain 6 having one end thereof connected to an eye bolt in the foundation 7 and the other end to a weight of suitable size 8. As illustrated the weight has a pair or eyes 9 through which is trained the section of the rope 6 which is attached to the foundation. This prevents swaying or displacement of the weight.

It will be seen that the action of the weight is to draw the movable section 1 downward, thus exerting a pressure upon the staves 3 and 4 and consequently tightcnling all the staves forming the body of the s1 0.

Suitably mounted either on the section 2 of the stave or upon the stave a and on the I interior of the silo is a board or sheet metal retainer IO adapted to extend in back of the movable section 1 in order to close the opening between the small end thereof and the foundation. I

In connection with the present invention it is also desirable to use dowel pins in addition to the above tongue and groove connection in, order to prevent longitudinal movement of the respective staves forming the silo with respect to each other.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope 'of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A silo including a plurality of staves, one of said staves split to form sections, means for reinforcing and preventing leakage between the sections, one of said sections being movable with respect to the other of said sections and means for automatically drawing said movable stave section down &

one of said staves split diametrically to form upper and lower wedge shaped sections, one of said sections being movable with respect to the other of said sections and means for automatically drawing said movable stave section downwardly to take up shrinkage between the remaining staves.

3. A silo including a plurality of sta'ves, one of said staves split diametrically to form upper andlower wedge shaped sections one of said sections beingmovable with respect to the other of said sections, a pulley on the movable section, and a weight connected with the pulley for drawing the section downwardly to take up shrinkage between the'remainin'g staves. r

4. A silo including a base anda plurality of staves, one of said staves split diametri cally to form upper and lower, wedge shaped sections one of'said sections being movable with respect to theother of said sections, a

'm'ovable section, a weight, means connected with the base portion of the silo and trained over the pulley forattachment to the weight to draw the removable section downwardly V to take up shrinkage between the remaining staves, and means for preventing swinging of the weight for the purpose set forth.

5. A silo including a base and a plurality of staves, one of said staves split diametrically to form upper and lower wedge shaped sections, one, of said sections beingmovable, withrespect: to the other of said sections, means forautomatically moving one section with respect to the other for taking up shrinkage between the remaining staves, and means secured to the immovable section interiorly of the silo and extending across the point of contact between the two sections to reinforce and prevent leakage between the two sections forthe'purpose set forth. 7
