JOHN TUISKU, OF FORT BBAGG, CALIFORNIA.
SAW-HANDLE.
Application filed June 27, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TUISKU, a citizen of United States of America, residing at Fort Bragg, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cross cut saws, *nd has for its object the provision of means for connecting the handle thereto, so that the handle can be quickly and easily detached from the blade when desired; and reversed to extend either above or below the blade for the convenience of handling the saw.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in conneclion with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, con'ibination and arrangement of parts as cl aimed.
in the drawings forming part of the specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the severtl views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a saw blade showingthe handle by full lines in one of its posltions, and by dotted lines in its reversed position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line of Fig. 1.
Fig. i is a perspective view of the adjusting element of the attachin means.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the angular shaped saw blade engaging member.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the connecting collar.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates a saw blade and 11 the handle, therefor.
In accordance with my invention, the handle 11 is provided with a reduced end portion which is received by a collar 12, which is provided with an extension 13 having a longitudinal bore communicating with a transverse opening in the reduced portion of the handle 11. The outer end of the extension 13 is of elongated substantially rectangular formation as at 14: and is provided with a groove 15 at each side of the bore for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
An angularly shaped blade engaging member, including right angularly disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 307,181.
long and short portions 16 and 17 respectively is provided, the portions 16 and 17 each being provided with a groove 18 which receives the longitudinal edge of the blade when the parts are operatively associated. The portion 17 is provided with a transverse opening to which the adjusting element 19 is shdably arranged. The element 19 is of substantially rectangular formation for a portion of its length, including a cylindrical threaded portion for the remaining part of its length with which a thumb nut 20 is associated. The lower end of the adjusting element is provided with a lug 21 adapted to be received in the usual opening 22 provided in the blade whereby said ele ment assists in supporting the blade. A block 23 utilized as a washer is interposed between the portion 17 and the thumb nut 20 surrounding the adjusting elements, and against .which the thumb nut bears when tightened to hold the adjusting element in a given position. Obviously the element 19 can be arranged to accommodate saw blades wherein the opening 22 is arranged in different positions withrespect to its head. The portion 16 projects a slight distance beyond its associated portions 17, and is provided with a flange 23 which is adapted to engage over the elongated portion of the extension 13, when the parts are associated. A thumb screw 24: operates between the flange 23 and the portion 16, and is received in either one or the other of the grooves 15, whereby the angular shaped blade engaging member, is fixed in its position with relation to the extension 13.
With a view of permitting the handle 11 to have its position reversed or in other words to allow the handle to project above or below the opposite edges of the saw blade for the convenience of the handling of the saw, I provide the portion 16 of the blade engaging member with the relatively short shaft 25 which is received within the bore of the extension 13 and also in the transverse opening of the handle 1.1. The handle together with the extension 13 is thus mounted for rotation upon the shaft 25, and can be readily and quickly arranged in either of the positions illustrated in Fig. 1 by lifting the thumb screw 24. Subsequent to the adjustment or position of the handle, this screw is again arranged in the groove 15 whereby said parts are held fixed relatively. The general construction and arrangement of parts, also provides for the ready scparation of the handle from the saw blade when the occasion requires.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself in this connection, in that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
hat I claim is:
1. A saw comprising a blade, a handle therefor, a collar fixed upon the handle, a hollow tubular extension projecting from the collar and arranged in alinement with a bore in the handle, an elongated member formed on one end of the tubular extension, and a blade engaging member, a shaft projecting from said member through the tubular extension and the bore in the handle whereby the handle may be rotated upon said shaft, a flange formed on the blade eir gaging member and voverlying said elongated member, the latter mentioned member having a tapered groove, and a set screw carried by said blade engaging member and adapted to be positioned between the latter and the elongated member within the groove of the latter to hold the blade and handle associated.
2. A saw comprising a blade, a handle therefor, a collar fixed upon the handle, a tubular extension projecting from said'collar, an elongated member formed on the end of said tubular member, an L-shaped blade engaging member having grooves to receive 7 the adjacent edges of said blade, means for holding the member associated with the blade, a shaft projecting from the vertical portion of said blade engaging member, the horizontal portion of the blade engaging therefor, a collar surrounding the handle a hollow extension projecting from the collar,
an elongated member carried by the outer end of the said extension, an L-shaped blade engaging member, sald member having grooves for the reception of the adjacent edges of the blade, a shaft carried by the vertical portion of said blade-engaging mem ber and received Within the hollow extension and a bore in the handle, the horizontal portion of said member projecting beyond the elongated member and terminating to provide a flange to engage the latter mentioned member, the elongated member having a tapered groove, a set screw carriedby the horizontal portion, and received within said groove to hold the blade and handle asso elated, said horizontal portion having an elongated slot, an adjustable element being of rectangular formation in cross section for a portion of its length, and of tubular formation for theremaining portion of its length, said element being slidable through said slot and designed to engage the blade, and a nut threaded on the tubular portion of said ale ment for the purpose specified.
In testlmony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN TUISKU.
