Description

s ne .an
j LOUIS DESROCHERS, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF T0 F. STEWART, 0F NORTH TIVERTON, RHODE ISLAND.
` nannsaw.
To all whom imag concern:
Be it known that. I Lome Dnsaoonnas, a
citizen of the United tatearesiding at Fall Riveiyin the ,county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Iand useful Improvement in Handsaws, of' which the following is a specification.
' to be cut, or for any other purpose, which markings may be at right or other angles.
Further, the invention aims v to provide improved means forenabling the front or rear ends of the handle of the saw to bev used for marking purposes, and to also provide a simple and easily operated attach ment for allowing the marking of :acute or obtuse angles. v
Other and hereinafter set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings-- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a saw with the handle thereof shown partly broken away and in section and having'the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan edge view.
Fig. 3 s an enlarged section on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the front wear points.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the handle 1 attached to the usual saw blade 2 is formed with a lateral passage chamber or opening 3, which at its outer end terminates in a lateral extension or part 4. A plate 5 is rigidly secured to the top side edge of the handle and has an extension 6, which conformably fits in thel part 4. The plate 5 is formed with an opening 7 inregister with the chamber 3, and has hinged at 8 to its inner end an arm 9 which is used in cutting or marking bevels. The arm 9 is provided with a link 10 hinged thereto at 11 and operating in the chamber 3 and having teeth 12 to form a positive engagement with the plate 5 adjacent its opening 7, a thumb screw 13 being threaded through the extension 6 of plate 5, and at its free end bearing against link 10, so asto Specification. rf Letters atent.

hold the latter locked in any position to which it may be moved, as depicted in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that by setting or adjusting the arm 9, in desired angular relation to the edge E of the saw the arm 9 may be used in marking bevels, 0rangles by using same in conjunction with the edge E.
The outer tips T of the saw handle are provided with transverse grooves in which the `legs of ishaped wear points or members 14 are received, these members being in a line drawn at direct right angles to the edge E of the saw blade.
Wear points or 'members 15 are also provided in the inner tips 1 of the handle, these tips having cut-away parts or end shoulders 16 engaged by the heads 17 of the screw fastenings so 'as to clamp the wear points in position, thus eliminating the necessity ofthe separate fastenings in the case of the members 14, which latter fastening means consists of screws 18, as shown 1n dotted lines Fig. 2.
The handle is also provided with levels 20 and 21, arranged at right angles.
From the foregoing it' will be apparent that thewearing points or members at the .opposite ends of the handle may be used to 'as will be apparent from `the foregoing taken in connection with the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is- 1. A Saw having a. handle, Said handle having its inner end points formed with slots, wear members in said slots having end shoulders disposed interiorly of the outer side faces of the handle, and fastening means for the blade having heads which abut the shoulders and clamp the wear members in position.
2. A saw having a handle, fastening means for the saw blade, said handle having spaced transverse slots extending through the front edge of the handle opposite to said fastening means, and wear members arranged in said slots and engaged With-said fastening means so as to 'be held in the slots thereby.
3. A saw having ahandle, fastening means toward the saw blade, members extendin,` transversely 'of ther peints and having enf: parts, andy fastening'means for the saw bladV havingV heads which abut the end parts of the members 'and clamp-same therebetween.
In testimony whereof' I have signed my name togthis speciicationin the'presenee of 20 twosubscribing witnesses.; 'l
,- LOUIS DESROCHERS.
