Description

April 9, 1929. R. A. HOUSE FILE GUIDE AND HANDLE Filed June 29, 1927 A TTORNE Y.
Patented Apr. 9, 1929.
RANDOLPH A. HOUSE, OF MIDDLE HADDAM, CONNECTICUT.
FILE GUIDE AND HANDLE.
Application filed June 29,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in filing devices, and partic ularly to devices for filing saws.
In filing the teeth of most hand saws, a triangular file is used, but the file must beadjusted axially to produce the desired vertical angle on the side of the tooth, and at the same time the file must be swung into an angular position, within a horizontal plane, to produce the proper angle of cut on the side of the tooth, transversely of the saw. This is generally accomplished by holding one end of the file in one hand, while holding the other end of the file in the other hand. Usually the end of the file,
next the operator, is provided with a handle, but the other end of the file is held in the bare hand, with the result that, when a great number of saws are being sharpened, the bare hand becomes sore. Also, it is dillicult to hold the file at the proper angles, to produce the desired and required cuts on the teeth of the saw, and especially to obtain the same angles on all of the teeth. This is due to the fact that the tile turns both axially and horizontally, in the hand oi? the user, so that all of the teeth are not liled to the same angles.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a device which serves as a proper guide to the operator to accomplish the required angles while filing the teeth, while at the same time the device serves as a handle for the end of the file remote from the user.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a file guide and handle, made in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view of the same.
l igure e is an enlarged vertical sectional detail view on the line all of Figure 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a segmental plate having its smaller end bent to extend at right angles to the plane of the plate, as at 10. In the smaller end of the plate, adjacent the angularly turned portion, there is formed an opening 11, and formed in the upper face of the body of the plate, in radiating relation to said opening, are lines 12,

numbered in opposite directions from the central one. Disposed through the opening 11 is the threaded stem of the post 13, a spring washer let being engaged on the stem, beneath the plate, and a pair of nuts 15 engaged on the stem against said washer. Formed transversely through the post is an opening 16, in which is engaged one end of an obtuse angular arm 17, a set screw 18 being engaged downwardly through the upper end of the post for binding engagement with the arm 17. Formed integrally with the post, and arranged to traverse the before-mentioned radiating lines 12, is a pointer 13. In the other end of the obtuse arm 17, which is extended downwardly be low the plane of the plate 10, there is formed a longitudinal kerf 19, and in the side walls of the kerf, at the outer end thereof, are formed the semicircular recesses 20, within which is frictionally held the intermediate portion of a transverse guide rod 21. It will be noted that the upper side of the post engaging end of the arm 17 is flat, as at 22, whereby when the screw engages therewith, said arm is held against rotation in the opening 16, of the post 13.
In a downwardly extending end 10, of the plate 10, there is formed an opening 23, and fixed in the opening, at one end, is a cylindrical block 24, the other end extending beneath the horizontal portion of the plate. Rotatably engaged in the first end of the block 24 is the reduced end of a cylindrical block 25, such end being arranged to be held in different rotary positions by the set screw 26, carried by the block 24. Formed longitudinally through the block 25- is an inclined and triangular bore 27, in which is received one end of the file 28, a set screw 29 being carried by the block 25 for holding the file within said opening. On the vertical face of the portion 10 of the plate 10, just above the block 25, are lines 30, radiating from the center of the opening 23, and formed integrally with the upper side of the block 25 is an indicating hand or pointer 31, arranged to traverse the lines 30, as the block is rotated within the opening 23. This movement of the block 25 serves to adjust the file at the proper position axially, to produce the desired angle with respect to the vertical plane of a tooth of a saw, while the adjustment of the post 13, rotatably, provides for the horizontal swinging adjustment of the file, within a an. mu
the plate 10 With the left hand, While plac' ing the angle of the file between two adjacent teeth of the saw. The operator then moves the file until the guide bar or red 21 is close to the near side face of thesaw, and
in parallel relation thereto, when observed by the operator both from above, as Well as from the side of the saw. He then draws the file toward him seein that the bar or rod 21 isinaintained in its proper parallel relation to the saw. The file is then reciprocated by the operator until the saw tooth tace ias been redueed to the proper angles, both vertically and transversely of the saw. When one tooth has been properly filed,
the file, together with theinechanisni carried by its reinote end, is lifted, and the file edge transferred into the space between the next ad acent pair of teeth, and the filing operation repeated, as above described.
Each time that the operator reciprocates the file across the face of the tooth, he must observe that the rod 21 is maintained iii parallel relation to the cutting edge of the saw, both when observed above and at the SlClGOf the saw. Observance of the parall-e1 position of the guide rod will maintain the tile in its proper position to accurately file the saw teeth at the required angles.
What is claimed is: 7V V 1. A' file guide and supportcomprising an angle plate having. a vertical leg and a horizontal leg, av rotatahly adjustable file end supporting member mounted in the vertical leg, a verti'cle rotatable post mounted in the horizontal leg an arm slidably ad justable through said pest, and a transverse sight guide carriedby the outer end of the said arin.
2. A file guide and support comprising an angle platehaving a. vertical leg and a horizontal leg, a file end receiving and clamping tube rotatably adjustable in the vertical leg and having an indicating hand traversing a dial on said leg, a vertical post rotatably adjustable in the horizontal leg of the plate adjacent the said dial andhaving a transverse opening therethrough, said post having an indicating hand thereon for traversing a dial on the said horizontal log, a bent arin slidably adjustable through the opening of the post, anda transverse bar carried by the outer end or" the arm and overlying the adjacent end of a file supported in said tube. I
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature.
