EXTENSION-WRENCH.

Bc it known that I, ALLEN C. MAR'HN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot' Ralston, in the county of Adams and State of W'ashington, have.invented certain new and uset'ul Iu'iprovements in ExtensionlVrenches, ot' which the following is a speciication.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide an improved extension wrench in which the jaws may be quickly and with little effort extended and adjusted to the size of the work, the construction heingsuch that the wrench may he readily manipulated 'hy one hand, and may he insta nt a neo usly adj usted.
A further object ot the invention is to provide an. improved wrench of the class described. which will he characterized by advantagesof simplicity, durability, elti-V ciency in operation and economy in manufacture.
lVth these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompany ino' drawings in which like characters of re erence indicate like parts through the several tigures, of which Figure 1 represents a side elevational view, partly in section, of a wrench constructed according to my invention, the jaws being; shown in one position in full lines and in another position in dotted lines` Fig. 2 represents a view inse'ction taken transversely on the plane indicated hy the line A-A of Fig. l.

In carrying out my invention I form thi` l, each at the outer end of one of the arms 2, there being a pair of such arms. T hesc arms taper toward their inner ends and are pivotally connected together as at 3, the arms being` movable toward and away trom each other about the pivot point 5%. One of the arms 2 is provided on its outer side with a plurality of notches 5 which ure a suitable distance apart and are of snitable dmensions, and these notches are adapted to cooperate with a lug l() formed on thc casing 6 in retaining the arms and jaws in adjusted osition.
This casing shdably receives the arms Q and tapers toward its outer and smaller end. This end may be rounded as at 7 lo 'form a convenient hand grip. The inner and larger end 8 of the casing is thickened. whereby to provide a strong construction, and thc lue' 10 is cast on the Casing at itS larger end near the entrance to the casing, as clearly shown. The side walls of the Casing' are provided with longitudinal slots 9 through which the outer ends of the pivot pin textend. These ends do not extend loeyond the outer surfaces of the casing, but are -adapted to slide in the slots, thus guiding the arms i in their movements longitudinally of the casing.
lt will he readily understood that when the jaws l are engaged work. and the casing is locked relatively to the arms hy engagement of the lug S with one of the notches 5, the arms and jaws will he held againstslipping and the work will hc effectively held hetween the jaws for manipulation.
The wrench beingl in the position with the jaws retracted, as indicated in full lines in Fig. l, and it being desired to engage a larger piece of work, the casinp or handle may he zgrasped in one hand with the jaw onY which the notches 5 are arranged `upwardly. and then `hy throwing the hand outwardly and downwardly, the jaw will he disengaged t'rom the lug 10 `and this will cause the arms to move to the outward extent of their path ot' move-ment. The jaws will then he jammed on the nut, pipe or other work, and the adjustment of the jaws lto thc work will take place automatically hy reason of the t'act that the casing will move upwardly along the arms until the `lai-grex' reinforced ond ot the casing will jam around these arms. Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of 'parte thereof as do not depart from the Spirit of the invention sind the scope of the appended rlzlim.

An extension wrench of the class described including a casing forming a handle, a pair arms the casing,
