A5 .5 I I F QHHWT' INVENTOR I ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT o GEORGE HEART, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
1919. Serial No, 296,599.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be 1t known that I, GEORGE H. HART, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Switches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in electric switches and has for its object to provide a switch having a cover which is Ylocked in position so as to prevent its removal by unauthorized persons. It further has for its object to provide a locking means for switch covers which will compensate for variations in the bases of the switches.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
' which,
Figure 1 shows, partly in side elevation and partly in section, a switch embodying my invention;
ing a spring-plate 5 secured thereto. 6 is the handle of the switch, having aspindlc in the well known manner.
7 yieldingly held by the spring 8 and prevented from turning relatively to the main portion of the handle by the head 9. The spindle 7 screws upon the upper screwthreaded end of the shaft 4. The main portion of the handleis provided with a surface 10, which makes engagement with the cover 2 so as to hold the same in position with its lower end engaging the support 1 The main portion of the handle is provided with a recess 11 covering the upper end of a cup-shaped member 12, having a flange 13. The body portion of the cup-shaped member 12v extends through an opening in the cover 2, the flange 13 projecting over the edge of said opening so that when the (up-shaped member 12 is held in place the cover 2 is also held in place. The flange 13 is spaced apart from the cover by a short distance, as shown at 11, so as to compensate for variations in the thickness of the porcelain 3. In order to lock the cup 12 to the shaft 4, I provide a nut 15 adapted to receive a key, the form shown having recesses or notches 16 for a spanner wrench, which nut screws upon the upper end of the shaft 4 and clampsthe bottom end of the cup member 12 against the spring-plate 5 so as to hold the member 12 firmly in place and prevent the removal ofthe cover 2 until the nut 15 is removed. There is sufficient space between the upper end of the spindle and the cup to admit the insertion of a spanner for the purpose of screwing and unscrewing the nut 15. The bottom end of the spindle 7, when screwed upon the shaft 1, engages the upper surface of the nut 15, which acts as av stop therefor.
With this construction, the cover 2 is held in lace even when the handle 6 with its spin le 7 is removed from "the shaft 4 and can not be removed exceptby the use of a suitable spanner or key, which is ordi narily not available to unauthorized persons. I preferably make the nut 15 separate from and easily insertible into the cup member 12.
In assembling the parts, the cover 2 is first placed in position. The cup-shaped member is then inserted and the nut 15 screwed upon the spindle by a suitable key wrench, after which the handle6 can be applied in the ordinary manner.
This application is a division of my application No, 277,765, filed February 18, 1919.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a switch, the-combination of a support, a rotating shaft rising therefrom and having a screw-threaded upper portion integral with the bottom portion of said shaft, a perforated cover engaging said support, a
un on.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920. Original application filed February 18, 1919, Serial No. 277,765. Divided and this application filed May 12, f
cup surrounding said screw-threaded upper portion and having a flange extending over the edge of the perforation of said cover, a nut screwed upon the upper end of said shaft and located within the bottom of said cup-shaped member, said nut being adapted to be engaged by a wrench.
' by a Wrench. g 3. In a switch, the combination of a sup- 2. In a switch, the combination of a support, a' rotating shaft having a screwthreaded upper portion, a spring-plate adjacent to the lower end of said screwthreaded portion, a perforated cover surrounding said shaftand engaging said support, a'cup-shaped member surrounding the port, a rotating shaft having a screwthreaded upper portion, a spring-plate adjacent to the lower end of said screwsthreaded portion, a perforated cover surrounding said shaft and engagingsaidsuppo'rt, a Y cup shaped member surrounding V the upper end of said shaft and having an eX- tension projecting over the edge of the perforation'in said cover, and means engaging the screw-threaded portion of said shaft and holding said cup-shaped member against said spring-plate and adapted to be engaged by a Wrench, said extension being spaced away from said cover to compensate for variations.
