This invention relates to a valve-operating handle adapted to be detachably mounted upon the outer end of a valve stem for openingand closing the valve and refers more particularly to handles which are molded `from bakeliteor other suitablematerial, by dies under pressure somewhat inthe manner of die-casting. t i
Y It is frequently` desirable to provide the hubs .of 'these handles with extension skirtsv which, together with the `main body ef` the handled is adapted to enclose the portions of the valve stem extendinglbeyond thevalve case together with the means for securing the handle tothe stem. v-
,fl It would, of course, belidesirable to mold the handle and; its skirt in one piece. 'butunderA the present methods of molding bakelite and analogous ,materials it has been found to be impractical to mold the skirt-integral with the hand-le,V andthe main object of the present invention is to mold these parts 'separatelyin such `manner that they may be easily and quicklyassembled one upon the other and upon the valveistem without adding materially to the cost of manufacture.
Another object is toprovide the sections with telescoping parts splined one upon the 4other to-turn in unison and for relative axial displacement. l t Y t A further object is to provide the skirt section with a suitable shoulder* adapted to cooperaterwith a similarjstop on the valve caseI for limiting the turning movement of the valve and handle connected thereto. Other objects and usesrelating to specific parts of the devicewill be brought out in the following description.4 .j
In the drawings Figure 1. is a `side elevation of a valve equipped with my improved handle.
Figure 2 is an enlarged verticalsectional view, taken in the plane ofline 2 2, Figure 1, showing a portionof the valve casein elevation. t l Y ',Figure 3. is an enlarged inverted trans- NFigure 4 is a transverse sectionalview `taken inthe plane of line 4 4, Figure l.
Figures 5 and 6 are perspective views respectively of the main body and skirt of the handle. y l
Inorder that the invention may be clearly understood I have shown a valve case 1- containing 1a suitable valve i2- projecting outwardly through the usual gland 3+ of the valve case for receiving and 1,supporting a. handle This handle comprises an outer end section or `main body ,-4- and an inner end section or skirt 4-5-, lthe outerend section being provided with a. hub *6,- projecting inwardly beyond .the inner face of its outer portion, said hub ,being provided with a central lengthwise opening -.-.7-. for receiving a portion `of the valve stem 2+ andL suitable .fastening means such as a screw -8-. The intermediateportion of the opening -7- adjacent the outer end of the handle section A'-4- is reduced in, diameter to forma shoulder 9 against which the outer end of the stem -2-7. u is adapted to abut, said stem being `'provided in its outer end with a threaded socket for receiving the threaded inner end of the screw ,-8- having its outer end enlarged for engaging the shoulder -Qf and thereby firmly clamping the section -4- to the valve stem, (--y but permitting said section :to be easily re.- moved by simplyrremoving'the screw -8 The portionV ofthe socket -7- and adjacent portion of the valve stem -2- eX- tending thereinto are of angular cross section or otherwise formed to spline one part upon the other to cause the handle and valve stem to rotate in ,unison when hand power is appliedto the handle,
The inner end of thehub #-6- of the handle section --llf-` is reduced in diameter to form an annular shoulder `-10' against which the outer end of the skirt section -5 is adapted to abut when assembled thereon.
The outer end of the skirt section ,-54- is Y outer and inner sections -4- and 5'- to' cause them to turn in unison and also to allow them to be displaced axially one from the other to be withdrawn from the valve stem.
The inner end of the skirt section 5;- is provided with a central cylindrical socket lllof somewhat l`greater diameter than that of t-he opening -11- to form an annular shoulder v15- whieh is substantially cto-incident with the inner end of thehub section --6-w when the outer endof the section Eiis engaged with the shoulder -10-.
This socket 14- is adapted to receive and enclose a coil spring-46'# and a pair owashers -17- and 18- which are interposed between the outer end ot the spring *16- and ledge #l5- of the part -5- so that the outer washer may be spring-pressed against the inner end of the hub and also against the shoulder -15- of the skirt -h to cooperate with the shoulder lO- for holding. the sections -4- and -5- against relative axial displacement when assembled for use;.
The portion of the valve stem -2- immediately adiacent the inner end of the hub is provided with an annular groove -l 9`v while the outer washer #17- refris teringwith said (rroove is provided with a radially elon grated opening -Q0.tlie outer endz of which is enlarged sufficiently to permit' it to he removed axially from the annular portion ot the valve stem when registered tlierewitlntlie inner end ot the radial openL intr -20- being of substantially the same diameter as the .qroove -l9- so that when moved to its operative position. as shown in Figures 2 and 4. it will engage the walls of the groove and therehv hold the springv -16- under compression.
rThe central opening in the inner washer -1S- is of slifrhtlv @greater diameter'than that of the adiacent portion of the valve .stem so that when the outer washer 1T- isremoved from the valve stem the inner washer and also the spring, -16- may also be removed endwise by outward displacement.
The inner end section -5 of the handle is provided with an outwardly projecting' peripheralprojection 2lforming a stop shoulder which is adapted to cooperate wit-h another stop shoulder -22- on the outer end of the `gland -3- for limiting the turning movement of the handle and valve actuated thereby in opposite directions, and thereby to indicate the open and closed positions of the valve, as shown more clearly in Figure 4.
That is, when the handle is turned in a clockwise direction the stop shoulder or pointer -21- will approach closely to the stop -22- in registration with the indicia Shut On the other hand, whenv the handle is turned in a counterclockwise direction the stop shoulder or pointer -21- may be brought into engagement with the stop shoulder -QQL- or in registration with the indicia Open to indicate that the valve is open.
lVhile I have shown and described the manner of assembling' the handle sections one upon the other and upon the valve stem, it will he remembered that the main feature of the invention consists in molding the outer and inner handle sections separately so that they may be telescopically assembled one within the other and splined one upon the other to cause-them to rotate in unison, and that when securedv upon the valve stem by means of the screw -8-` both sections will turn together with the valve stem.
It is evident, however, that certain changes may be made in the constructiony ot' the two sections ot the handle without departing from the spirit or object of the invention.
That I claim is 1. A handle for valve stems comprising an outer end section having its inner end re` abutting.r against said shoulder` the telescoping portions of said sections being.)r splined one upon the other to turn together, the inner end section having a stop shoulder adapt'- ed to co-operate with a companion stop on the valve case for limitingY the turning movement of the handle about its axis..
3. A handle for valve stems comprising outer and inner co-axial sections havingitelescoping parts splined one uponthe other, the inner section having. a socket in its inner end of greater diameter than that of the adjacent end of the outer section to receive a portion of the valve-operating. mechanism.
4. A handle for valve stems comprising outer and inner co-aXial sections havingr telescoping` parts splined one upon the other, the inner section havimgy a socket in. its inner end of `greater diameter than that of the adj acent end of the outer section to receive a porizo tion of the Valve-operating mechanism, said outer section having a central lengthwise opening for rece1v1ng a portion of a valve stem.
5. The combination with a valve stem, of
a handle composed of outer and inner c0- aXial sections having telescoping parts splined one upon the other, the inner section having av socket in its inner end of greater diameter than the adjacent end of the outer section to form an annular shoulder, means for locking the outer section to the valve stem against relative endvvise or turning movement, and means Within the socket engaging said shoulder for holding the inner section against inward endwise 'displacement from the outer section.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of January 1931.
