COMBINED SUPPORTING AND ELE'V'AUTING DEVICE FOR EMBLEMS.
Application filed April 153, 19153.
7h all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Conrnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lillinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Combined Supporting and llDlevating Devices for Emblems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device which may be advantageously employed to elerate and-support in an elevated position an emblem such as a flag or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character wherein a pole has fixed to the top thereof a, sprocket wheel holder of novel. construction.
With th se and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel COllll'llllillllOll and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
lfn the drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a combined supporting and elevating device for emblems constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section upon an enlarged scale through the upper end of the pole and the sprocket wheel holder which is mounted thereon.
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the sprocket wheel holder.
Fig. 4e is an enlarged detailed sectional view on the line l a of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the various views in the drawing.
Referring now to the chewing in detail the'letter Ir designates a combined supporting and elevating device with which is shown connected an emblem B.
The device A includes a pole 5 which is adapted to be mounted upon a support in any suitable manner and has secured thereto adjacent its base a housing 6. i l sprocket wheel 7 is arranged within the housing ti and fixed to a shaft 8 which extends exteriorly of the housing and may he engaged by a crank 9 when it is desired to turn the wheel 7 for a purpose which will herein-- after appear.
Attached to the pole 5 at its top is a sprocket wheel holder 10 which comprises a circular cap 11 having a convened top and Specification of Letters latent.

serial no. scenes.
a flat bottom face 12 which is adapted to contact with the top of the pole 5. The cap 11 adapted to protect the top of the pole from. the weather and has extending clownwardly from its bottom 12 an attaching arm 13 which is driven into the pole and has extending transversely thereof adjacent its; pointed end an opening 1 1. To more firmly secure the arm 13 in the pole 5 a bolt 15 passed through the pole and the opening in the arm 13.
Extending upwardly from the peripheral edge of the cap 11 is a second arm 16 which terminates at its upper end in a horizontally extending and interiorly threaded sleeve 17.
A bolt 18 has its shank passed through the sleeve 17 and serves as a trunnion on which is mounted to turn a sprocket wheel 19. The sprocket wheel 19 is retained upon the shank of the bolt 18 by a washer and a screw 530, the latter of which is removably mounted in one end of the bolt.
A chain 21 is trained over the sprocket wheels 7 and 19 and has each end thereof provided. with an eye through which may be passed the bill on a snap hook 23 secured in a corner of the emblem B.
liromthe foregoing description taken in cr'mnection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent that when it is desired to ele' vate or lower the emblem B the sprocket wheel '2' may be rotated through the operation of the crank 9 to cause the chain $21 to travel over the sprocket wheels 7 and 19 in the desired direction.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is In a support for sprocket wheels, a cap having a central downwardly extending arm integrally formed therewith, and said arm having a transverse opcnin there- I 9 through, sald cap having at one of itsends an upwardly extending arm terminating in a laterally extending sleeve, and the said sleeve having its bore threaded, and a threaded element providing an axle for a sprocket wheel engaging the threads of said bore an d having a non-threaded surface extending outwardly therefrom 011 which the sprocket wheel is journaled, and means for retaining the sprocket wheel against lateral movement on its shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANK CORTESE.
