Be it known that I, IVVILLIAM SIDNEY lVI-IYTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bedford, in the county of Lawrence and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Pneumatic Chisels, of which the following is a specificatio This invention relates to pneumatic tools, particularly to chisels, and has for its'object the provision of a handle member associated with a pneumatically operated chiselwhich is so constructed as to absorb the shocks and jars incident to the use of the tool and prevent injury to the hands of the operatorv An important object is the provision of a handle member oit this character formed as a casing member, the chisel member and easing being provided with cooperating guide members, and the casing carrying spring members having their ends engaging within notches in the chisel member whereby to provide resilience for absorbing shock.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eiiicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and ad-- vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device associated with a pneumatic hammer,

In carrying out my invention I provide a handle member formed as a casing including similar sections 10 which are elongated and which are of any preferred cross sectional configuration. Disposed within these sections 10 are longitudinally extending guide members 11 in the nature of bars formed rectangular in cross section, and arranged in spaced relation. Disposed upon the sides of the sections 10 and covering the space betweenthem are leaf spring members 12 which are secured in place by means of screws 13 which pass through the spring members, through the sections 10, and into the guide bars 11. These screws consequentlynot only hold the spring members 12 in position but also hold the guide bars in position within the handle casing. At oneend of the casing the ends of the springs 12 are bent outwardly and then inwardly toward the center of the casing, as shown at 1 1, and these ends of the springs are thinned toward their free extremities, as shown at 15, for a purpose to be described.
The chisel member is designated by the numeral 16 and is formed as a bar preferably the major portion of its length and provided at one end with a cylindrical extension 17 adapted for disposition within the pneumatic hammer A to be engaged by the plunger, not shown, therein. At its other end, the chisel mcmbercarries an enlarged head 18 having a cutting edge 19 and the particular contour or formation of this head will depend entirely upon the use to which the chisel is to be put. Adjacent the cylindrical extension 17 the opposite sides of the chisel have formed therein notches 20 within which are engaged the thinned free ends 15 of the spring 12.
In order that the chisel will be properly guided in its movement within the handle casing, I provide a plurality of plug like members 21 which extend transversely through the chisel body, which are cylindrical in shape within the chisel body, and which have their projecting ends 22 flattened upon opposite sides, as shown at 28.

It will be observed that when desired, the chisel may-be removed by pulling it longitudinally sharply to draw the notches 20 out with the spring tongues 15. It will be noted that the construction is simple and that the device is consequently not liable to derangement.

claim I f1. A. device of the character described serving as a handle and formed of two separate sections of elongated comprising a casing form arranged in spaced relation, spaced gulde bars dlsposed wlthin said sect1ons,leaf
springs disposed upon the sides of said sections' and covering the spaces therebetween, securing members passing through said springs, through the .walls of said sections,
and into said guide bars, said springs at one and then inwardly toward the center of said, casing and being I 16 will be given the proper blows for performing its cutting acsaid casing, a chisel member gradually reduced in thickness to define spring fingers, said fingers extending through the spaces between said sections, a chisel member formed as a bar rectangular in cross section disposed within said casing with opposite sides engaging against said guide bars, one end of said chisel member having a head provided with a cutting edge and the other end being formed as a reduced cylindrical extension adapted for insertion within the casing of a pneumatic hammer, a plurality of plug members extending laterally through and projecting beyond the sides of said chisel member, said plug members being cylindrical in shape in said chisel member and their projecting ends being flattened upon opposite sides and slidably engaged between said guide bars, said chisel member being provided in opposite sides with notches engaged by the inner ends of: said spring members.

A device of the character described comprising a handle formed as a casing, pairs of guide bars secured, within said casing and arranged in spaced relation, strips secured upon the sides of said casing, and terminating at one end in spring tongues extending into said casing, a chisel member formed as a bar having one end provided with a cutting edge and its other end formed as a cylindrical extension adapted for engagement within a pneumatic hammer, said chisel member being disposed within said casing in engagement with said guide bars, and a plurality of members extending laterally through said chisel member, projecting beyond the sides thereof and slidably engaged between said pairs of guide bars, said chisel member being provided in opposite sides with notches engaged by said spring fingers.
3. A device of the character described comprising a casing constituting a handle. spring fingers at one end of said casing extending thereinto, guide members within slidable within said casing and having one end provided with a cutting edge and its other end adapted for engagement within a pneumatic hammer, lateral projections on the sides oi said chisel member engaging said guide members and said chisel member being provided with notches engaged by said spring fingers.
