This invention relates to tools and while par ticularly intended as an improvement in nail sets, it may be employed in connection with any tool to which it may be advantageously applied.
When using nail sets of ordinary construction, great care must be exercised in centering the set on a nail and maintaining the executive end of the set on the head of the nail during the driving operation. Even when highly skilled craftsmen are employed, the woodwork is often marred by the set slipping from the nail.
Objects of this invention are to provide a nail set of simple, durable construction which can be manufactured at a very low cost and which can be quickly and conveniently mounted on a nail and maintained in operative contact therewith during the setting operation and to thereby provide a nail setting tool which will be very efficient in use and which will not mar the woodwork.
The above objects are accomplished and additional ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein I have shown a preferred form of the invention, it being understood that the invention is capable of various adaptations and that changes and modifications may be made or resort had to substitutions which come within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts as the same may appear in any of the several views and in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a nail set constructed in accordance with this invention,
Figure 2 is a central, longitudinal, sectional view of same showing a nail set body in its normal condition,
Figure 3 is a similar sectional view showing the nail set in use with the body shortened by distortion sufiicient to cause the bit to protrude therefrom and illustrating the nail in side elevation with the woodwork shown in section.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken as indicated by the lines 44 of Figure 2.
The invention will now be described with reference to the particular adaptation thereof disclosed in the drawing in which the numeral 5 is used to denote an outer body or casing which is composed of relatively soft elastic rubber. The body 5 terminates at the executive end thereof in a frustro-conical nose 5a. In the drawing, I have shown a body 5 of cylindrical shape, but it is to be understood that the same may be in any suitable shape and design. The body 5 is provided with a bore 6 which extends axially therethrough. The bore 6 is reduced in diameter through the nose portion 5a to provide an offset shoulder 6a, the reduced portion of said bore being designated by the numeral 7. The numeral 8 denotes a bushing which has the same internal diameter as the bore '7 and which is vulcanized in the nose 5a in coaxial relation to said bore and with one end of the bushing 8 in spaced relation to the end of the nose 5a.
The numeral 10 is used to denote a main body portion of a punch or nail set or other tool which in the particular adaptation of the invention illustrated in the drawing, is cylindrical in form and fits the bore 6. The main body portion 10 of the tool is ofiset smaller as at 10a to provide a cylindrical shank 9 which Will fit in the bushing 8 and the bore 7.
The numeral 11 denotes a head which is provided with an axial bore 12 in which one end of the body 10 is mounted. The head 11 is approximately the same size as the body 5 and is'in axial contact therewith. The head 11 is sweated, brazed or otherwise secured to the body 10. As will be seen by reference to Figure 2, the executive end of the shank 9 is normally positioned in spaced relation to the end of the nose 5a and the shoulders 6a, and 10a are spaced apart a suiiicient distance to permit a relative, longitudinal movement of the shank 9 and the outer body 5.
In use, the nail is driven part way into the woodwork 14. The tool herein described is positioned on the nail, with the head of the nail received in the bore 7. Force is then applied by striking the head 11 with a hammer thus forcing the nail 13 into the woodwork 14 as shown in Figure 3.
As the body 5 is composed of elastic rubber, it will shorten by distortion when force is applied to the head 11 thus permitting the executive end of the shank 9 to be forced outwardly beyond the nose 5a. When subjected to such distortion the elastic body 5 will immediately return to its normal shape, with the shank 9 in the position shown in Figure 2.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a tool of very few parts which can be manufactured at a low cost, which will be very efficient in use and which possesses many advantages over tools of ordinary construction.
Having thus illustrated my invention and described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, an elongated body of elastic rubber terminating at one end thereof in a tapered nose, said body having a longitudinally disposed bore, a tool mounted in said bore, the executive end of said tool terminating in spaced relation to the end of the nose whereby the nose will be distorted when forced against an object causing the executive end of said tool to project therefrom.
2. In a device of the character described, an elongated body of elastic rubber having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, a tool mounted in said bore, said tool having a head engaging one end of said body, the executive end of said tool terminating in spaced relation to the other end of said body, whereby force applied to said head will cause a distortion of said body causing the executive end of said tool to project therefrom.
3. In a device of the character described, an elongated body of elastic rubber having a bore extending longitudinally therethrough, a tool mounted in said bore, said tool having the executive end thereof terminating in spaced relation to the adjacent end of said body, whereby force applied to the head of the tool will cause a distortion of said body causing the executive end of said tool to project, therefrom.
4. In a tool, a cylindrical body of elastic ,rubber terminating at one end thereof in a frustro-conical nose, said body provided with an axial bore, a metal bit mounted in said bore, a head on said bit, said head bearing against the end of said body with the executive end of the bit spaced inwardly from the end of said nose.
5. In a tool, a cylindrical body of elastic rubber terminating at one end thereof in a frustro-conical nose, said body provided with an axial bore, a bushing vulcanized in said nose in close spaced relation to the end thereof and a metal bit mounted in said bore; the executive end of said bit being normally spaced inwardly from the end of said nose.
6. In a tool, an elongated body of elastic rubber terminating at one end thereof in a tapered nose, said body provided with a bore which extends axially therethrough, said bore being of smaller diameter in the nose portion of said body, a metal bit having a body portion fitted in the enlarged portion of said bore and a smaller shank portion fitted in the nose portion of said bore with the executive end of the bit terminating in spaced relation to the end of the bore and a head on the other end of said bit, said head bearing against the adjacent end of said body, whereby the elasticity of said body will yieldably hold said bit in an inward position in said bore.
7. In a tool, a cylindrical body of elastic rubber terminating at one end thereof in a frustro-conical nose, said body provided with a bore which extends axially therethrough, said bore being of smaller diameter in the nose portion of said body, a metal bit having a body portion fitted in the enlarged portion of said bore and a smaller shank portion fitted in the nose portion of said bore with the executive end of the bit terminating in spaced relation to the end of the bore and a head on the other end of said bit, said head bearing against the adjacent end of said body, the reduced portion of said bit extending a short distance into the enlarged portion of said bore.
8. In a tool, a cylindrical body of elastic rubber terminating at one end thereof in a frustro-conical nose, said body provided with a bore which extends axially therethrough, said bore being of smaller diameter in the nose portion of said body, a bushing vulcanized in said nose, said bushing co-axially arranged relative to said bore, a metal bit having a body portion fitted in the enlarged portion of said bore and a smaller shank portion fitted in the nose portion of said bore with the executive end of the bit terminating in spaced relation inwardly from the end of said nose, a head on the other end of said bit, said head bearing against the adjacent end of said body, the reduced portion of said bit extending a short distance into the enlarged portion of said bore to provide a space therebetween whereby the body when forced against a solid substance will be shortened by distortion causing the bit to protrude therefrom.
