Description

L. B. SHELTON.
Patented Man 23,1920.
LAWSON IB. SHELTON, or LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented MarJ23, 1920.
Application filed April 26, 1919. Serial No. 293,012.
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that LLnwsoN B. SHELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new'and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to make a hinge, which when used to mount casement windows to their frames, will permit the sash thereof, to be pressed down in front of the stool after closing the window, and myinvention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which,
Figure 1 shows a hinge embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a surface appearance of the hinge when complete. Fig. 3 shows the pivot pin with spiral sprin attached...
Re erringto the, drawings in detail, to describe my 1nventionz- Leaf 1, has the lower jortion of its knuckle ---2v raised away rom the pivot pin --3 sufficiently to make room for aspiral spring 4, to be mounted thereon, and
said raised portion of the knuckle --2--, has the end --5, cutaway to allow it to ass down-over leaf --6, at this point.
he'object of the spiral spring -l-, is to raise the leaf --l-, together with the window sash, when so attached, its upper end so arranged to form a seat for the knuckle of leaf The pivot pin -3-, is'fastened or rigidly placed in the up er knuckle--7- of leaf -6, and may be s otted .or grooved a part of its length to admit the upper end of the spiral spring -4--, and allow it to travel freely therein. The lower end of the 'maining portion fastened to a ring the pivot pin --3--,
thus relieve the spiral spring When the hinges are fastened in the usual way to an inner mounted casement window sash and frame, which has, the usual inside stool, the sash may be pressed down in front of the stool after closing, when a water tight joint is desired, and fastened.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim-and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a hinge having the usual alinin knuckles, held together by a pivot pin, 0 one of the knuckles arranged to slide on the pivot pin, at one point of its axis and be returned by means of a spiral spring encircling a'port-ion of the pivot pin between the knuckle ends of the matched members, the
said spiral spring so arranged, that it can be tightened to sustain more weight.
2. A hinge, one member of which, will slide down on the pivot pin, and thus ermit- LAWSON B. Witnesses E. O. Gunner, H. PEARL GILBERT.
