and Tvon G. BARCLAY, citizens of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Berrien, in the State of Michigan, have in vented certain. new and useful Improvements in @tore-lhront Constructions, o l which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to store front constructions and similar devices and is primarily designed for the holding of plate glass in show windows or elsewhere and has lor its object the improvement of structures of this class. The features of novelty, advantages and capabilities will become ap parent from a detailed description of the ac conipanying drawings in which there is illustrated a practical embodiment of one form of the invention but the construction there shown is to be understood as illustrative only and not as defining the limits of the invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the inner gutter 1, which is constructed of sheet metal and provided with openings toadmit air and carry away water, collected in the gutter from condensation or washing the windows, is provided with a downwardly extending flange 2' which extends outwardly, thence downwardly and then outwardly to form the gutter 3 for protecting the Woodwork of the sill and for carrying the Water from the inner gutter to the openings 4, which are formed in the upwardly extending flange 5 of the gutter 3. The upwardly extending flange 5 is provided with an inwardly and outwardly extending flange 6, over which flang there is designed to fit an adjustable outer retaining strip 7, which strip is adjustable toward and yieldingly held against the plate glass 8, by means of screws 9* which cotiperate with the screw threaded openings in the gutter 3. It will be noted that such screws extend downwardly and slightly inwardly and by proper adjustment draw the outer retaining strip 7 downwardly and inwardly towardthe gut ter 3 as a result of which the plate glass is yieldingly retained in place and by the arrangement of the gutter 3, it will, when undue'outward pressure is imposed upon the ,retaining strip 7, yield to a certain extent and thus greatly eliminate the breakage of glass which might be caused by undue outward pressure on the outer retaining strip 7.

A further advantage is derived by the arrangement for adjustingthe outer retaining strip, in that the pressure on the glass is in direct as a result of which the breakage of glass is greatly reduced.

F or supporting the upper portion of the gutter 3, above the sill, there are provided a plurality of setting blocks 10, (one of which is shown) by which arrangement the gutter is not only held up from the woodwork but in addition it permits the screws for securing the outer retaining strip in place to pass through the gutter 3 without injuring or entering the woodwork.

' On the upper portion of the gutter 3, are a plurality of setting blocks of any desirable form on which the glass plate rests edgewise.

Operatively positioned in the upwardly extending flange 5 of the gutter 3 is a slide 11 provided with openings designed to register with the openings 4-, to regulate the drainage or ventilation. It is particularly advantageous to provide a slide on the out side of the setting as distinguished from devices which are provided with slides in the inner gutter, for, by having the slide on the outside, dust or other foreign material cannot accumulate on the interior of the setting as is true when the slide is positioned on the inside of the setting or glass.

Having now described our invention, we claim In ,a plate glass setting, the combination of an. inner gutter member, provided with. drainage openings, an underlying gutter formed integrally with. said inner gutter member, extending outwardly thence downwardly from the inner gutter member, and. designed so that the inner portion of said underlying gutter is supported above a sill and forms a cover for glasssupporting blocks on the sill, said underlying gutter being up-turned at its outer end, and provided with drainage openings, an outer retaining our names to this specification in the pres member adjustable to and from the underence of two witnesses.
