GEORGE W. DAVIS, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED SASH-SILL AND J'AMB COVER.
Application filed January 11, 1915. Serial N 0. 1,586.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, county of Lancaster, and State of Nebraska, have invented certai new and useful Improvements in Combine Sash-Sill and J amb Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is particularly designed as a glass or pane holding means for store front constructions and it is thus illustrated in thedrawings, but it is susceptible of other uses and adaptations. It is within the spirit and scope of the invention to provide ventilat ing and draining means in connection therewith, but the invention is not limited thereto.
My object is to provide a simple, relatively inexpensive, and easily installed combined clamping strip and sill cover of improved construction and whose parts are combined with the wooden sill and a back strip in an improved manner, effecting improved, beneficial results. i
The manner in which the clamping strip, side and back strip are combined, enables them to be shipped together in: such a state that the construction can be simply mitered and nailed onto the building where it is to pearance of the store front.
' The invention is fully set forth hereinafter and recited in theappended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective, partly in section, showing the invention in use and a portion of a store front; Fig. 2, a detail perspective, with parts broken away, showing the'inner tension plate; Fig. 3, a similar view of the clamping strip and sill cover which are preferably in a single piece; Fig; 4, a vertical section of a modification having drainage and ventilating means Fig. 5, ,a detail longitudinally the full length of the strip.
perspective of a portion of'the cover plate of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, a detail vertical section, illustrating the leverage action of the clamping strip in all forms of the invention and, further, showing a rabbeted edge for the main sill and how the cover for the main sill may be removed.
The wooden sill at the bottom of the store front is shown at 1. For the adaptation of my invention thereto, the sill is provided with a longitudinal channel or rabbet 2 which may be of inverted V-shape, or as a rabbet 2* as in Fig. 6, extending the entire length of its bottom facenear the outer edge thereof. The glass store front or pane is shown at 3. The back strip't is preferably of wood, although I am aware that it could be of sheet metal. If of wood, which I prefer, the back strip 4 is nailed to the sill 1. If of sheet metal, said back strip 4 may be secured to the sill 1 in any preferred manner. I have found that by the use of wood for the back strip 4, all expansion or contraction of the glass 3 is taken care 'of better than if sheet metal is used, beside affording rigidity and solidarity as well as ease of attachment to the sill 1. Whether wood or metal beemployed for the back strip 1, it is provided with a channel, rabbet or seat 5 for the pane 3 and the arrangement and combination with the other parts is such that the pane may be set from the outside.
The metal sill cover 6 and metal clamping plate 7 are preferably made in a single piece, as shown in Fig. 3. The sill cover 6 conforms to the front 8 and top 9 of the sill 1 and also to a portion of the bottom 10, the bottom portion being provided with a longitudinally extending bead or rib 11 which is received in the rabbet or groove 2, thus holding the parts secured together and forming a metal facin for the under face of the sill. The strip, is bowed and may be of the form shown, or of other. appearance, provided the bowed formation is retained. This bowed formation gives the strip 7 a certain leverage, adaptlng it to exert a continuous pressure on the pane 3 and to conform to any variations therein. The strip 7 is provided with channels or grooves 12 and 13 formed by bends therein, said channels or grooves extending An inner outwardly bowed extension tension plate 14 of the form shown in Fig. 2,
has longitudinally fiat portions and 16 which are received in the grooves or chan-' nels 12 and 13. The arch or bow of the touches the front wall of the wooden strip 4 nor the inner wall of the strip 7, but is in the nature of a diaphragm interposed between said parts. Preferably the lower inner corner of the strip 4 is'beveled or cut away at 17 to afford entire freedom for the Channeled part 13 to permit it to be drawn into-said cut away portion 17 so as to afford no impediment to the yielding or Cushioned clamping action of the channeled part 12 on the pane 3 under the tension exerted by the tension plate 14. This tension is effected by screw bolts 18 passing loosely through the strip 4 at different points of the length thereof and having their screw-threaded ends 19 engaged with screw-threaded holes 20 in the center of the tension plate 14. Preferably the holes 21 through which the bolts 18 pass, are provided with countersinks for the heads of said bolts. These holes may be provided with internal sleeves or bushings or not,-as preferred.
The tensionof the bolts 18 is exerted on the middle bowed portion of the plate 14 and applied against the channeled parts 12, 13, drawing both of said parts inwardly toward the strip 4 and with a leverage on part 12. resulting in a firm, cushioned pressure being applied to the front of the pane 3. thus adapting the strip'7 to all variations in the glass 3 and also drawing the sill cover against the front and top 8 and 9 of the lieferring to Figs. 4 and 5, in addition to the construction previously described, I may provide drainage and ventilation holes 22 extending through the sill 1 and strip 4 and opening out at the bottom through one wall of the bead 11 and at the top through a hole 23 in a cover plate 24 which may be provided for the strip 4 to prevent moisture from rotting the wooden strip 4. Holes 25 maybe provided to afford access to the bolts 18. As many drainage and ventilation holes or ports 22 will be provided, at intervals lengthwise of the structure, as desired.
Fig. 6 illustrates the leverage' action of the strip 7, dotted lines showing it sprungback from the fulcrum point, seat or base 26 and full lines, the normal position of said strip, the leverage extending from 26 to 12 and being applied at 12 to the pane 3, forcing the latter against the wood cushion back strip 4. The bolts 18 are used, as previously explained, but are not shown in this view.
This leverage action is common to all forms of the invention.
Instead of employing the channel 2, I may use a rabbet 2 at the outer edge of the -sill 1 and strip 4. This form of channel 2 may be used on all forms of the invention.
In Fig. 6, I have shown the cover 6 broken away at 6 better to illustrate the location of the fulcrum seat or base 2".
The complete structure may be shipped in such a state that it can be simply mitered and nailed onto all the sides, forming a frame and sash complete on the store front or other place where it is to be used and the pane 3 readily set, thus saving much time and labor heretofore consumed in fitting together the parts of store front constructions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a main sill, of a back strip supported thereby having a rabbet adapted to receive, support, and form a backing for a glass pane, a sill cover and bowed clamping strip formed in a. single piece, said clamping stripbeing adapted to bear against the outer edge of the pane and having upper and lower rebent portions, a tension plate located back of the clamping plate and whose upper and lower edges are interlocked with the rebent portions aforesaid, and fastenings located below the lower edge of the pane connecting the free central portion of the tension plate and the back strip together.
2. The combination with a main sill having a channel in its bottom, of a back strip supported thereby adapted to form a backing for a glass pane, a one-piece metallic sill cover and clamping strip, said cover conforming to the bottom, front and -top of the main sill and having a part of GEO. 1V. DAVIS.
