EUGENE PIERRE OGTA'VE TRUDEL AND AUGUETE ZIPLNI, OI? MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ATTACHMENT FOR PUMPS.
Application filed April 52 To all whom it may concern Be it known that W6, EUGENE Prnnnn Oo- 'rwn TRUD'HL and AUGUSTE ZIANI, respectirely a subject oi the King of Great Britain and a citizen of the French Republic, residing; at Montreal, Province of Quebec, lloininion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Pumps; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact (inscription of the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in attachments for pumps or the like, and the main object or: the invention is to device a simple and etl'ective means to automatically stop a pump When a certain level oi fluid has been obtained in a tank.
The device herein disclosed adapted to shilit the driving belt of the pump from the iast to the loose pulley, or to cut out the electric current actuating the operating inoior oi the pump.
The invention consists essentially in derising an arrinigeinent oi parts whereby a float by rising or falling inside a tank Will operate a. controller bar which, in turn acts to shiiit the belt 'or throw the motor switch as the case may be. a
The invention Will be better understood with the aid of the accompanying drawings in which: a
Figure l is a front elevation of the attachment in which the tank shown in section to disclose the inner arrangement.
Fig. 2 th e operatin atta chn rent.
his; 3 is a ii tginental detail View of a modified arrznigenient in which the invention is utilised to operate the switch of an electric motor in the event oi the pump being directly connected to the motor.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts of each figure.
in the dravings 1 represents a tank having at one end a Water inlet pipe 2, and 3 is a bracket on the upper end oi. said tank in which suitably journaled a pulley 4t, 5 and 6 are pulleys suitably secured in the bottom of said tank, and 7 is a pulley secured to the inner side of said tank adjacent its upper edge.
At any convenient place, near or away from said tank may be secured a base board 8 Which is provided with the pulleys 9 and 10, and 11. is a cable adapted to pass over an enlarged trout elevation of Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 287,034.
said pulleys et, 9, 10, T, (l and 5, said cable being secured at one end to the top of a float 12 having depending sides 13, preferably of inverted cup shape, and provided at its top with an air chamber 14:. The other end of said cable 11. secured to the upper 1nernheir 15 ot a toggle, l member 15 being provided with a lOl slot 16 in which Works a pin 17 secured to the board 8, one end oi? said member 15 being provided. with a hook like or curved portion 18 having a hole 19 therein. The lower llltll'llllBl' 20 of the toggle is pivotally secured to the lower end oi the upper member 15 by means of the pin 21 and has at its other end a hook-like or curved portion in which is provided a central hole and EH: is a spiral. spring loosely secured at opposite ends in the holes 19 and 23 to urn-orally hold the toeglo member; in vertical position. end of said :lnt-nnber 2t) pivotally secured on the pin onthe base-board S. and 2-6 is a horizontally disposed controller bar inter- "i said members 15' and f2 and provided with a. longitudinal slot 2? which is adapted to engage the pin 21. At one end oi? said bar 26 is pivotally connected a link 28 which is adapted to pass tl'lroug'h a bracket Eli) secured to the baseboa rd 8. T he link 28 is provided with two downward depoi ng lugs 30 adapted to engagjie the drivin g loll oi? the pinnp.
A. cable 31 suitably secured at one end to the bottom oi? the air chamber 1.4; of the heat and passes around the pulleys 5, 6, and 7, said cable being seem-ed at its other end to the toggle member 15 on the opposite side Olli the cable ll-so as to exert an opposite, pullingaetion.
It will readily be seen from the foregoing description that immediately on lowering or rising oil the Water level in the tank 1 according to the manner in which the device has been adjusted, the cables 11 or 31 will exert av pulling action on the toggle due to the upward or downward movement of the float which follows the water level. According to the drawings the device is so arranged that if the Water level drops in the tank 1 the float Will naturally exert a pulling action on the cable 11 Which will naturally pull the toggle 15, 2O gradually or suddenly as the case may be past the vertical position into the dotted line osition disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of t e drawings The lower thereby shifting the controller bar 26 and link 28 toward the right. The lugs 30 which engage the belt will carry the same onto the driving pulley, thereby putting the pump into operation and thus filling the tank to the required level.
The float which will gradually rise with the liquid in the tank will eXert a contrary actionv on the cables, that is: the cable 31 will be pulled back carrying with-it the t0ggle 15,20 and bar 26 which will shift the driving belt onto the loose pulley when the predeterminedlevel has been reached.
In Fig. 3 oi the drawingsis illustrated a modification of the invention, according to which an electric switch 32, which controls the supply of current to the motor is actuated by the movements 01"? the controller bar 2-8, the handle of which is pi votally connected to the bar 28 by, n'ieans of the link In this case, the pump 1s connected directly to the motor and no driving belt is used.
34; and 35 are weights provided on the cables ,11 and 31 for taking up the slack of said cables and thus imparting an immediate action on the member15.
It will readily be understood that the construction of this device may be altered or modified according tothe existing conditions without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. It is evident that the device can be easily adapted for other purposes than those specified in the foregoing description.
