ALFRED B. CASTLE, 0E UNIoN CITY, MICHIGAN.
'WATER-TANK ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,565, dated March '16, 1880. Application filed January 10 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED B. OAsrLE, of Union City, Branch county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Water-Tank Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of water-tank attachments; and my invention consists in providing a water-tank with a device which shall catch the overflow from such tank and shut off the source of supply, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detached vertical section.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a water-tank designed to be filled through the operations of a windmill, the lower portion of the supporting-frame B of which is shown in the drawings for the purpose of illustrating one adaptation of my invention.
At a suitable point near the tank I erect a frame, 0, within which I suspend a proper vessel or bucket, D. This vessel is provided with guide-pins a and ears b, which slide in the slots 0 in the frame. E are springs secured at one end to the frame, whose free ends are bent inwardly through the slots 01 to engage with the cars 11 in the sides of the vessel. From the bottom of this vessel I conduct a flexible pipe, F, which discharges from the vessel into the tank A below its vertical center. On the inner end of the pipe is secured any suitable valve. (Not shown.)
From the top of the vessel D, I carry a rope or chain, G, and connect the same to a proper lever, I, which operates to throw out of gear the mill or other means employed to force the water into the tank.
In operation, and until the tank A has become so filled that the overflow escapes through the pipe H into the vesselD, the latter remains in position shown in the drawings. So soon as this vessel has received an amount of water sufficient in weight to overcome the power of the springs E the vessel drops, and, through the cord G, lever 1, and rod J, throws the windmill out of connection with the pumping mechanism, or it may close the vanes of the windmill, and thus, by shutting off the power, cut off the supply of water. As the contents of the tank A are drawn off the vessel D remains in its lowered position until the Weight of the water contained therein is greater than the pressure of the water against the valve in the tank. The water then gradually discharges into the tank until the counter-balance of the machinery is sufficient to again elevate the vessel D to its original position.
By this construction I am enabled to utilize the overflow of the main tank, while at the same time the water is saved and prevented from escaping to the ground and rendering it wet and muddy about the tank.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The tank A and the bucket D, arranged to receive the overflow from said tank, and by its weight stop the pumping mechanism, in combination with a pipe-connection between the tank and, bucket to allow the water from ALFRED B. CASTLE.
