BELTING.

Application tiled pril 1, 1918, Serial No. 2535,976.-
Re it lnown that I, lVILLiaM B. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lorwood, in the county ot Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new -and useful Improvements in Belting,l ot
therein; and, further, to provide a round belting` with an outer coating of leather.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawing, in which l latter:
Figure l is a planyiew of a strip of textile -material havine' reintorciiw cords laid 9 rn t) jor instance, canvas or duck. The strip extends lengthwise in the direction of the arrow "The .strip is suitably coated, preferably en both sides thereof, by means of a coating; 13 ot" a bindingmaterial, for instance, .invnleanized rubber. The strip of textile material ie arranged to be rolled 'trom one edge thereoil to the other' edge thereof, the rolling beginning,.f0r instance, at the edge 14., which thereby becomes the inner edge ol the strip when rolled into the belting. the rolling proceeding to the other edge l5 o'l the strip.
(lords are embedded in the belting while it is being rolled and may, 'for instance, be laid upon the strip at suitable positions for delerminingrV the location of the cords inside the beltingr when tinished. Thus the cord 16 may extend substantially coincident with the inner edge 14 ot the strip, and the cords l?, '18, 19 and. Q0, be located at distances from each other, the eords extending lengthwise Specification of Letters Patent.

oi' the stilfzxnd parallel 'with its edges. The cords l?, 18, lJ and 20 are preferably spaced from the cord lo a greater distance than .the spares between proximate ones et' said cords 17,18, 19 and 2t). The cords are preferably composed ot' a fabric'or fibers, and may be provided 'with a coating 2l of the binder. The strip and cords may be of indefinite lengths. l
The material is rolled so that one of the cords is located in the center ot the belting and the others ot' the cords are arranged around the center. The cords are for the purpose of reinforcing the'belting, that is to say, preventing lengthwisestretching of the belting. The rolling preferably taker-3 place on' an axis which is parallel with. the strip.
The outside et the rolled strip olf' textile material is provided with a coating 22, which may be similar to the binding niaterial ot the coatings 13. beth sides of the strip are initiallyv coated with the coatingi 13, the enter gration olf one ot the coatings 13 may constitute the coating 22, The binder coating 22 is provided with a coating ol leather, exemplitied as a coating' 23 of leather flock. This leather coating is apl' plied to the rolled stripin suitable manner, as by passing the coated rolled strip through a mass of leather tiocl: or by sprinkling the leather flock on the same.
The binder is then suitably hardened, this ha rdening, in rase the binder is a rubber or rubber Composition, being accomplished. by a vulcanizine` oi' the Same.
The leather coating or coating' of leather Hock, acts to prevent slippage of the belt on the pulley. and tia'thermore, gives the beltine' the advantage ot lim/'ine` the appearance of' leather betting". YEllie leather flock enhances the tractive value. of the belting. and acts as a friction medium between the beltingand the driving' or driven part with which the belting engages, for instance, a
igrooved pulley.
