Abstract

Belts.-Leather belting is formed by tapering and cementing together the ends of a series of strips so as to form joints 2, the length thus made being then split longitudinally and the upper portion reversed end for end, so that the grain in the two portions runs in opposite directions and the stronger portions of the two layers are on opposite sides of the centre-line of the belt. By this means, the joints in both layers run in the direction in which there is no tendency either of the pulley or of the air to force them open. The joints in the two layers are also staggered with reference to each other.
