Description
H HOLT.
Improvement in Butter-Tubs.
Patented Nov. i9,
AM Prmm-mHmAPH/b m Mrfossanuss Pnocsssvj TT rTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE HOLT, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PAUL A. CURTIS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m BUTTER-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,226, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE HOLT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Covers for ButterTubs, &c., of which the following is a specification:
Fastenings for the covers of tubs have been made of metal 5 they, however, have usually been in the form of a cross-bar above the cover, or a hinge that allows the cover to be lifted. These devices are often costly and difficult of application, and frequently project above the cover so as to interfere with standing one tub upon another, as is often done in storing the butter or other material.
My invention consists in a hooked strap or iron fastened upon each side of the tub, beneath and between which the cover is slipped edgewise; thereby the retaining device projects but little above the top of the cover and is very strong and compact. I employ alatch or latches to prevent the cover being withdrawn until thelatch is moved.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan of the cover and fastenings; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of 'the same; and Fig. 3 is a section of .the line .10 :20.
The hooked strap a is secured to the side of the tub by suitable rivets or'screws, and the distance between the hook end 2 and the upper edge of the tub 61 corresponds 'to the 7 thickness of the cover 0, and upon this cover 0 is a plate, b, with a latch, 3, and there is a stop or projection at 4. If there is a strap and plate at each side of the cover and tub, then the cover will be secured by slipping it edgewise between the straps on and beneath the hook ends 2 until the stops 4. arrest the further movement of the cover and the latches 3 spring up and hold the cover in place. I, howbe removed with facility after the spring catch 3 is pressed down. The wooden cover is to be recessed beneath the latch only sufficiently for allowing it to be pressed down in unlatching the cover; hence there will not be risk of injury to the latch in use. In place of the hooked strap e with a curved recess a headed strap may be used, and a notch made in the edge of the cover, and in any instance the surfaces in contact may be sufficiently inclined to press the cover to the tub as the same is slipped into place.
I claim as my invention 1. The strap a attached to the side of the tub and provided with the hooked end 2 projecting over the edge of the cover, in combination with the cover 0, plate I), and latch 3, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The fastenings for the cover of a tub constructed with overhanging or hooked ends,
substantially as specified, beneath which the cover is slipped laterally while in contact with the end of the tub, as set forth.
Signed by me this 10th day of September,
HORACE HOLT.
